UK - When the Imperial War Museum in London needed lighting to enhance the launch of its new touring exhibition, Their Past Your Future, TPYF communications manager, Sarah Dowd, turned to White Light Events, following the successful collaboration between White Light and the Museum on the 1940's House exhibition in 2001.

Their Past Your Future is a new educational project led by the Imperial War Museum, and funded by the Big Lottery Fund, which aims to inspire people of all ages to discover the Second World War, how it shaped and altered the world's course, and why it is still relevant now and in the future. It is now showing in nine different locations around the UK, including: Bluewater Shopping Centre in Dartford, Kent, Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes, Action Stations at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Forest of Mercia Innovation Centre, Staffordshire, Blackburn Mu

UK - HSL Productions is supplying all lighting equipment for the current Bill Kenwright UK tour of "Jesus Christ Superstar". Lighting designer is Nick Richings and Simon Sherrif operates the show.

The rig includes a wide variety of Martin Professional MAC moving lights - 11 MAC 2K profiles, eight MAC 2K Washes, 12 MAC 500 profiles, six MAC 250s and four MAC 300s. There's also four DHA Digital Light Curtains and the generic lights include 36 Source Four Profiles with different lenses, and a selection of PAR cans.

All the generic fixtures are fitted with either ChromaQ Broadway or ChromaQ PAR scrollers, and Sherrif is running the show from a WholeHog II console. HSL has also supplied three Avolites ART dimmer racks and one of its custom built mains distro. The whole rig is completely self-contained at each venue apart from follow spots, which are supplied by the house.

UK - In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the release of The Who's legendary album, Tommy, a production of the musical Tommy has hit the road for a 20-week European tour with lighting supplied by PRG Europe. PRG won the opportunity to supply the lights after the show's production company, Theatrical Management Group (TMG), decided to change lighting and audio suppliers at the last minute. "I chose PRG because they enabled me to stay in budget while keeping my original design," said Michel Boersma, the show's producer.

Given only two weeks to ship and set up the equipment at the tour's opening in Frankfurt, PRG's Alan Thomson and Loz Wilcox, together with independent production electrician Simon Needle, pulled out all of the stops in delivering a solution on-time. UK - Workwear manufacturer Setwear has announced the availability of EasyFit 2 - a tough yet flexible glove made from 0.5mm synthetic leather with durable gel foam padding in the palms for extra grip and neoprene reinforcement over the knuckles for flexibility and protection, while Lycra panels between the fingers increase mobility and give extra comfort.

Machine washable and fast drying, these gloves allow you to dial your phone, tie knots and operate equipment without taking them off, say the company. The gloves "built for the needs of the technician working in the live entertainment industry" are now available from stockists in the UK and Europe.

UK - Robe ColorSpot 1200 ATs and Spot 250 XT moving lights are on Natasha Beddingfield's current UK tour - her first shows with her own production to promote the successful debut album, Unwritten.

Lighting designer Dave Gibbon decided to buy the XT 250s himself, having used them extensively last year on the Hadley vs Cox tour and other events. "There's absolutely no doubt that they are the most reliable and cost-effective fixtures available for the type of work I do" he says - which ranges through a variety of touring artists to corporate and special events.

It was important that Beddingfield's lighting rig was adaptable and flexible as it's visiting a great variety of venues, from student union gigs and clubs to large theatres. It also had to fit into an expedient amount of truck space.

USA - Bandit Lites has been named as the number one entertainment lighting company in the world not once but twice in the start of this year. Bandit was named the Lighting Company of the Year in Los Angeles at the PLSN Parnelli Awards on 25 February, right on the heels of the Pollstar Awards for Lighting Company of Year in Los Angeles on 4 February. This is the first time in history any firm has won both of these awards in the same year.

UK - Stage Electrics London has complete the move into its new shop, after more than 12 months at its Long Lane premises. "We wanted to give our customers easier access to the facilities at Stage Electrics," says Linda Moore, head of sales and marketing for the company. "We have the added value of parking at the rear of the building where we now have customer access to the shop and hire warehouse."

There have also been some additions to the team at Long Lane. Stephen Bray has joined as sales manager for the branch. Bray has come to Stage Electrics from a background in sound, most recently at Media Tools. Also, James Morris has joined as a customer service representative after working at Vodafone. Bray and his team will shortly be holding a series of open evenings to introduce products and services now available from London.

UK - Neon wire is a new form of flexible lighting based on the electroluminescent principle. The cable consists of a centre core of phosphor coated copper wire with a spiral wrap of two fine wires covered with a plastic outer sheath. When a voltage is applied across the wires, the phosphor glows. This gives a neon like effect. This cold light source is currently available in seven colors and four sizes ranging from 2.3mm, (2.5mm high brightness) 3.2mm 5.0mm and the maximum length on a roll is 250m.

Laser Electronics has now developed the first in a range of DMX 512 control units for driving flexible neon wire. These control units have a very fast response time giving an almost strobe like effect. China - Robe ColorSpot 1200 ATs were a vital element of Roy Chooi's lighting design for the final of Singapore Idol, produced by MediaCorp Studios. This was staged in the Singapore Indoor Stadium in front of a live audience of 7,000 and a TV audience of 1.8 million.

Chooi's design was operated by Kenneth Chow, and all lighting equipment was supplied by CSP Productions. The 16 Robe 1200 AT's were used heavily throughout the show as powerful upstage beam effects. Chooi chose the Robe units specifically for their zoom facilities, brightness and selection of gobos. He had previously used ColorSpot 1200s during recording of the Singapore Idols TV series - at MediaCorps' Studios - and wanted to recreate elements of that lighting scheme for 'The Final Showdown' event designed for TV as well as live viewing.

UK - Presentation Service Providers (PSP) is continuing its strategy of investing in the latest technologies with the purchase of a new range of Pixel Par 90 LED-based Par cans. The range is highly energy efficient with up to a 90% reduction in heat and power in comparison to incandescent sources. Austria - On 10 December 2004, The Empire Club opened in Vienna, bringing a new focus for the Viennese 'in crowd'. With Empire venues across Austria, owner Joachim Natschlager brought in Kraftwerk, who have worked on Empire and other projects all over the country, to equip the new venue. The Empire club is subdivided into three plains; the main dance area, a VIP bar where special guests can have a specified seating area, and the lounge, where guests can relax.

UK - The Society of Light and Lighting, part of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), is to host an interview with the prolific TV lighting director, Mark Kenyon, on 15 March. Kenyon's work ranges from 'traditional' shows such as Parkinson and Blind Date through to entertainment extravaganzas such as Party at the Palace, which took place in the grounds of Buckingham Palace as part of the celebrations for the Queen's Golden Jubilee, and for which he received an RTS Lighting Award nomination.

Rather than give a lecture, Kenyon will be interviewed by Peter Phillipson about his TV Lighting techniques. It will be open to SSL (CIBSE), ILE and ALD, ESTA and PLASA members and interested members of the public. The session will begin at 6.00pm sharp, and guests are asked to arrive by 5.30pm. Entry is free, but guests must sign in.

UK - A.C. Lighting has supplied 169 Chroma-Q Color Blocks to prime-time BBC One programmes Comic Relief Does Fame Academy 2005 and Red Nose Night. Comic Relief Does Fame Academy returns this year to see another 13 well-known celebrities go head-to-head in the ultimate singing competition to raise money for good causes in the UK and abroad. Hosts Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty also return to present the extended series from the new Academy location on the banks of the Thames.

The show aired for the first time on Saturday 26 February and sees the students perform live from the Academy every night on BBC One. At the end of each show, one is expelled until just three are left for the final showdown during Red Nose Night on Friday 11 March. Extended backstage coverage of the show is also running for digital viewers on BBC Three and BBCi.

USA - In a move that is bound to set the lighting industry talking, Strand Lighting announced today that Sonny Sonnenfeld would be rejoining Strand after a 20-year absence, as commercial consultant and New York representative, serving the consultant, Broadway, and dealer community. Sonnenfeld joined Century Lighting (now Strand) in 1945, after serving throughout World War II in the South Pacific. In 1961 he co-founded Lighting & Electronics, rejoining what had then become Strand Century between 1975-85.

UK - It's been a case of in with the new at Scottish lighting specialist black light, with two new faces on the team. Hire manager Alan Jackson has decided to return to his native England, so managing director Gavin Stewart has taken the opportunity to reorganize the company's hire department.

Richard Hogg was already doing a fine job running the day-to-day business of the department and Seonaid "Shonny" Aitkenhead has now joined him, having worked with black light as a freelancer at the end of 2004.

This has allowed Jackson's successor to fulfil an expanded role. Phil Haldane has now joined the black light team as events manager to actively develop the company's specialist events work.

UKExploring the boundaries between classical opera and popular musical theatre, English National Opera are mounting the first-ever London revival of the original 'New York, New York' musical, Leonard Bernstein's On The Town. Directed by Jude Kelly and choreographed by Stephen Mear - joint winner of this year's Best Choreography Olivier Award for his work on Mary Poppins - the production will play just seventeen performances at ENO's home, the London Coliseum, between March 5th and May 24th.

Fitting a full-scale musical into ENO's already-busy rep meant that lighting designer Mark Henderson and ENO's head of lighting Kevin Sleep decided to add some additional automated lighting equipment to complement the automated Robert Juliat 2.5kW PCs in Licht Technik yokes that were added to the rig aspart of the Coliseum's spectacular refurbishment in 2003/2004.

Australia - A collective featuring some of Australia's most popular contemporary musicians performed at Waveaid- a once in a generation event that generated approximately $2 million in funds for the millions of people whose lives have been irreversibly impacted by the recent tsunami disaster in Asia.

The sold-out show was held on 29 January at Sydney's Cricket Ground before an audience of 50,000. The concert was broadcast live on many radio networks around the country and highlights televised on various channels the following day.

The concert saw over eight hours of quality performances from the likes of Nick Cave, The Finn Brothers, Kasey Chambers, The Waifs, Missy Higgins, Powderfinger, John Butler Trio and highly anticipated sets from both Silverchair and Midnight Oil. UK - No longer hidden outside of town, the Pulrose Power Station in the town of Douglas was rebuilt into an environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing structure with a bold Martin Architectural colour changing illumination.

The Manx Electricity Authority (MEA) has constructed a combined cycle gas turbine power station at Pulrose on the Isle of Man. The structure includes a 75m tall flue stack and 30m high glass wall (turbine hall) that allows the generation process to become visible. The design includes a bold lighting concept in conjunction with lighting design firm Speirs & Major Associates.

France - The organizers of France's annual domestic entertainment technology exhibition again announced an impressive 25,000+ visitors to the event this year. This is certainly a well-attended event, with a good steady buzz around Hall 5 where the majority of the lighting, sound and staging exhibitors were, but many visitors seemed to be crammed into the 'Siel Nuit' hall downstairs, which catered for late night entertainment - more of a crowd puller than LEDs and line arrays.

Upstairs, there was entertainment technology aplenty, with the hall dominated by a number of the country's leading distributors. UK - Amazingly, Arc 05 held at the Design Centre in Islington last month, was the UK's first lighting show entirely dedicated to the Architectural market. The event's debut on the circuit was by all accounts more successful than predicted, with 2,295 attendee's, 88% of which were from the UK.

Paul James, editor of Mondo Arc, told me: "We've had very positive feedback with everyone appreciating what we're trying to do. We realize that, for some people, there were a lot of LED companies as a proportion of the overall exhibitors, but for the inaugural year we are absolutely delighted with the visitor figures, which were above our target. With the feedback we are getting from current exhibitors and companies who are eager to come on board, we are confident that Arc '06 will grow as we forecast."

France - Proving that some people will go to any lengths to procure their mixing console of choice, French sound, lighting and video company ETF-Procon recently hired a JCB to install a Midas Heritage 2000 at front of house for the Festival International des Pyrénées, Olorons Ste Marie, France.

The concerts during the festival took place at various outdoor venues, including the town square, where the front of house position was in a control room constructed above the performance area. As 800 temporary seats for the public had already been installed in the town square, access for the 56-channel console into the control room was restricted. Heads were put together, and it was decided that the easiest way of delivering the console was through the rear window of the control room.
