UK - The annual May Balls at Cambridge University always generate a fierce rivalry between the various colleges as to who can stage the best. In 2009 Peterhouse, the oldest college at the University, had four stages at its Ball featuring Turbosound systems.

This year's event was particularly special as it celebrated 725 years of the first college in Cambridge and the 800th anniversary of the University itself and, with a Britain and its rich history theme, the event featured a wide variety of entertainment, from civil war recreations to the most contemporary performers.

Supplied by South London-based Subfrantic Production Services, the four systems had to cope with a remarkable array of audio. "The line-up was eclectic, to say the least," says Subfrantic proprietor and general manager Steve Davies. "For example, the main stage featured modern acts like Si

Palestine - The Church of the Nativity, one of the most emblematic sites in Bethlehem, universally known to mark the birthplace of Jesus Christ, hosted a sermon given by Pope Benedict XVI last May, with the attendance of more than 10,000 people. The sound for the event was carried out by Antarelectronics, who opted for the Aero 38 line array systems.

In total, 16 systems, eight flown about 5m up on each side of the stage, were used. Low frequency reinforcement was handled by Aero 182 systems, two ground stacked on each side of the stage. The choice of the Aero 38 proved a success for the sound company, as the system gave uniform coverage across the square, providing high-end sound for one of the most anticipated events of the season.

USA - Digigram unveiled AQONDA for the first time in the US at InfoComm 2009. In essence, a remotely-controllable EtherSound stagebox, AQONDA is capable of transforming up to 16 analogue audio signals into as many EtherSound channels, and injecting them into an EtherSound network. Building on the success of Digigram's original EtherSound bridges, ES8-mic, ES8-in and ES8-out, AQONDA combines the functionality of all these devices in a single 2U rackmount unit and incorporates additional network and control capabilities.

The device is available in two formats: AQONDA-8 which is 8-in/8-out, and AQONDA-16 which is the 16-in/16-out version. The inputs are of high quality and switchable between microphone and line level. The microphone preamps are also high end to ensure that audio quality remains uncompromised throughout. The preamps may be remotely controlled from any digital consol

UK - After a successful initial UK tour and run in London's West End, Take That 'tribute' musical Never Forget is currently on a further, far more extensive, tour of UK venues. This is the first theatre production on which sound designer Richard Brooker has used a DiGiCo SD8, which he chose because it immediately addressed a range of the challenges that provincial tours inevitably throw up.

"As a sound designer, I have been quite faithful to established analogue theatre consoles like Cadac," he says. "But, as associate sound designer on Mamma Mia!, I was looking after a DiGiCo D5T and was very impressed by it.

"I also designed a production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Spain last year which used a D5T12. I got on fine with it and was very happy with the results, so when I heard about the SD8, I thought it sounded very interesting. At the

Russia - The 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow, held in the Olimpiysky Arena to a live audience of 18,000 and an estimated 200 million television and internet viewers.

Lighting designer Al Gurdon carefully selected all of the lighting equipment to meet the challenges of the production and the long wish list of the Russian organising committee. This translated to over 750 moving lights, 250 LED lights and 100 conventionals, extending to every corner of the arena, including the rig, balconies, floor and scaffold.

The roof load was a massive 140 tons, which was over the load capacity for the venue. The solution was to allocate 40 tons to a supporting scaffold approximately 100m wide by 22mhigh, and providing additional functions beyond just support.

135 Alpha Spot HPE 1200 fixtures were placed inside the colossal grid, arranged in vertical columns of five fixtures from top

Crucial to the theatre's update would be a cutting-edge sound system, holding up to the rigours and demands of a wide variety of current theatrical productions and musical events. Fernando García Carrión, the head of the A/V department of Madrid-based installer Chemtrol's División Teatro (theater division), selected a wide range of EAW products as the system's loudspeaker and monitor components. Chemtrol recently installed the full system, with the support of EAW's Spanish representativePro3 & Co.

UK - Over 140 i-Pix BB4 wash lights are featuring on the stadium shows of Oasis' current Dig Out Your Soul world tour, together with 17 i-Pix BB7s. This is an increase of nearly 100 BB4 units - the standard touring rig started with 42 along with seven BB7s - and is currently the record amount of i-Pix fixtures used on a single concert touring show.

Gawler's original basic over-stage rig concept which started the tour in October 2008 utilised 30 BB4s, with six units rigged horizontally onto each of five steeply raked upstage/downstage 'finger' trusses. These were attached via custom brackets fabricated by lighting suppliers PRG, and are utilised to produce a general stage wash.

When the summer 2009 stadium shows appeared on the itinerary an extra finger truss was added over the stage, making six in total, along with another six integral BB4s now rigged in vertical pairs,

USA - Known among astronomy buffs as the location of Southern California's Mt. Wilson Observatory, the mountaintop is also a metro-media centre for relay broadcasting of radio and television frequencies heard and seen across the greater Los Angeles region. With an imposing antenna farm perched at its summit, the site bombards the Monrovia High School below with RF of a magnitude that is hard to find just about anywhere else.

Slated for use with the school's theatrical presentations and other events, the system was designed to exist, quite literally, in the eye of a very serious RF storm.

USA - The Entertainment Technician Certification Programme (ETCP) will launch practice exams for Rigger, Arena, Theatre and Entertainment Electrician certification exams on 15 July 2009. The web-based practice exams will consist of 50 questions and are available from that date forward for thirty-five dollars at www.goamp.com.

The ETCP Council understands that there is a certain amount of fear surrounding the exams because many candidates have not taken an exam in quite some time and/or may be unfamiliar with computer-based testing. The 50 question practice exams will provide candidates with a valuable tool for self assessment. There is no application process with the practice exams; so any interested candidate will be able to take the exam privately at home, at the office or on the road whenever it is most convenient for him or her.

UK - Since 1988 the market town of Hay has been the setting for one of the world's biggest book festivals. The event is now an essential feature in the cultural calendar attracting authors, publishers and media attention from all over the world.

The main venue at the festival has always presented a challenge for audio reinforcement. To manage this, Stage Electrics supplied L'Acoustics' Kiva Curve Linear Array this year.

The numerous novice public speakers and interview format used creates a level problem along with acoustic challenges arising from staging the event in a marquee, the numerous reflections and the inclement Welsh weather.

Sound designer Paul Turner specified the L'Acoustics' Kiva system due to its formidable reputation for speech reproduction. Previous attempts to install a line array in the venue had presented problems due to limits on weight loading and sight
