The comprehensive range of audio assistance equipment offered by Current Thinking included clipboard and portable induction loop amplifiers, a low-spill induction loop kit, the Unity self-contained voice alarm amplifier and controller, plus the VoCall EVCS combined fire telephone and disabled voice communication system.

Resource management is the name of the game for Protonic: Easyjob V3.0 is software developed by a team experienced in the entertainment industry, for personnel, equipment, and general asset management. A German language original has become an English version - curiously by demand of Danish customers. The software also features a sub-set for large project management jobs, and Protonic provides user training and support.

Australian lighting control manufacturer LSC revealed its new XTC console, taking the best features from the popular MaXim console and re-packaging them in a striking, compact club console format. LSC's EKO DMX dimmer is now available as a hybrid machine with architectural features - it talks DMX and also offers environmental features such as internal memories and remote wall stations.

Commercial Audio Solutions supplies specifically architecturally pleasing and appropriate products. Products on the stand included the WSP Series of flush music panels from CES Audio, as recently supplied to the Theatre Royal Stratford East on the recommendation of English Heritage.

An upgrade to its hoist control software saw Chainmaster refining a well-liked product. More significantly with BGV D8, the rigging standard for hoisted loads above the public, Chainmaster now offers a retrofit double-brake assembly for all its hoists. (BGV D8 allows for 50% rated load above the public, provided the hoist is double-braked).

The new Prolyft hoist from Prolyte is a range of chain hoists with a built-in scannable code device that enables users to data track their equipment for servicing and utilization. Also new, Prolyte Barrier is a lightweight crowd control barrier. Just 35kg per 1m section, it has a simple interlock and folds totally flat for storage.

MD Kirsten Eicher said Look Solutions was having an extremely busy show with many international visitors on the stand interested in its extensive range of fog machines. The company has recently opened a new office in the USA to respond to its growing market.

Tannoy highlighted its new Arena 5.1 system for residential and 'lifestyle' applications: it features extended wideband frequency response and dual concentric drivers. Minimum components in the signal path ensure transparency and aural separation. A 300W amplifier powers the subwoofer, the cabinets are stylish and curvaceous with stands that swivel round to become wall brackets. Arena is currently available in black, white, silver and bronze.

Optima Lighting showed its new Matrix 300 spot moving light fixture. With 575 and 700 Spots and Wash fixtures in all three ranges 'coming soon', they were testing the water at PLASA for the first time. The fixtures are designed and engineered in the US and manufactured in Romania.

Dare Professional Audio, always hot on the aesthetic front, is getting into architectural audio products with its new 'Wafer' enclosures. The back box is installed at first-fix stage and the front grille cloth - available in a variety of finishes, colours and printed patterns - is attached at second fix stage. The box is available in 2, 3 or 4-ways versions. The 2-way, an A3-sized 40mm deep panel is being sold via the Marcus Art Galleries in Birmingham.

Being positioned next to the Bandit Lites bar meant that TMB-UK had a captive audience for much of the show. Dominating the stand was an eye-catching, star-shaped array of ColourPix LED fixtures, a product aimed at the increasingly blurred area between LED lighting and video.

XTBA featured a range of products, among them its new DMX Audit and The Splitter View DMX splitters. The View shows what's occurring on the DMX line and also transmits, so the user can add and set levels to DMX channels. The Audit takes that info to another level, enabling all DMX parameters to be changed. It can fix 'bad' DMX with a couple of button presses, and it can send 'fast', 'slow' or 'lazy' DMX to help different DMX strings talk to one another!

Element Labs showed the latest generation of its popular LED products - VersaTILE and VersaTUBE. VersaTILE now has factory-set colour calibration as part of its fourth generation upgrade. This close control over colour accuracy also allows faithful reproduction of more difficult colours such as grey, brown, fleshtones and pure white, say the company. Meanwhile, VersaTUBE has also been enhanced with improved colour rendition and other features.

Going up in the world was Penton UK, which took a stand on the top deck - a change from its usual downstairs position. This year's focus was on overseas clients, but there were three new speaker products, including a circular version of the vandal-proof Sentry, the PW6/T inexpensive rectangular enclosure and the PMC4/T weatherproof model.

The new Amico range of portable PAs was a feature of the FBT Elettronica stand. Available in four different versions, all are designed as pre-wired 'plug and play' systems with the top model featuring 600W+2x150W amplification, 15-channel mixer with phantom power, two mid/high cabinets and a 15" bass driver. Designed by Renkus-Heinz, the new Qube line array is built by FBT in Italy and designed for either flying or ground stacking.

Tryka LED launched several new products including a new 110V driver, the Module 144 Power Flood with inbuilt driver and the Modulation Driver RF18, a master/slave system controller for connecting up to 256 slave units to one master, with 18 LEDs per unit. Thus, 5,000 LEDs can be controlled via one small DMX remote.

Mico Lighting deals with all the major lamp manufacturers - Osram, Philips, Lee, Sylvania, and sees PLASA as a vital meeting point for leading practitioners from the worlds of theatre, concert touring and other areas of performance. The company was also promoting its new lamp recycling service.

Lots of news from Digigram - including the appointment of Jimmy Kawalek (see news, p.18). Digigram's EtherSound - its patented real-time Ethernet-based audio networking technology - now provides bi-directional capability over a single cable, as well as adding higher sample rate conversions at 88.2, 96 or 192kHz. EtherSound licensees, which currently include NetCira by Fostex, Nexo, Bouyer, InnovaSON and Auvitran, will announce their plans to implement the new features independently, says Digigram.

The company has added an Entry Level Agreement to its EtherSound licensing scheme - a move aimed at enabling pro audio manufacturers to bring EtherSound-compliant products quickly to market with minimal development investment. Meanwhile, Auvitran has been appointed as the first Authorised EtherSound Implementor.

Computer DJ launched itself at the show, introducing innovative new products, starting with the IMP range of interactive media players, designed for mobile DJs using MP3. The Robus is a briefcase-style product with storage for 100,000 MP3 files, with touch-screen management, an Ultimate backlit keyboard that's ideal for use in low light and many more features. Biometric fingerprint security prevents unwanted tampering!

Staging specialist Maltbury showed a prototype of its new Steeldeck Ultra, which it claims is a lighter product with all the strength of Steeldeck. Other Maltbury products on its expediently-sized stand included Metrodeck, Metrodeck Ultra and the industry standard Steeldeck.

Leprecon products ranged from small two-scene 12-channel memory assist controllers to full memory consoles for conventional and moving light systems. Also shown, compact tree-mount and UL-recognized dimmer packs, custom touring and installation dimmer racks and architectural dimming and control solutions.

The PISA 42 DMX projector was on show on the Lagotronics stand, offering powerful light output balanced by an efficient heat management system. At PLASA for the first time was the linear lighting device based on DMX technology, which allows direct control of LED strips.

On the product front, LiteStructures offered a new self-climbing truss tower, the LP4 Climbing Leg. Designed for LiteStructure's LP4 trussing, the tower will climb to 8m and carries up to a ton; hand-winch or electric versions are available. XLite Deck is a lighter weight version of Lite Deck using a lower profile and giving a lesser loading. Xlite supports 5kN/sq.m as opposed to the 7.7kN/sq.m of its stronger cousin. LiteStrutures also displayed an architect's model of its new rehearsal facility, due to open this autumn.

First time exhibitors at PLASA, PG Stage Electrical, was having a good show meeting up with serious buyers. PG introduced the Dexel Lighting range from Brazil to the UK market, aimed at low-budget applications.
