Upbeat in Belfast - Belfast staged the MTV Europe Music Awards at the weekend and the City Council believes the ceremony could generate £10m in tourism revenues, while a specially organised Belfast Music Festival in the run-up to the show saw several local bands sign management and record deals.

Lady Gaga dominated the proceedings, collecting four gongs. The singer gained awards for best song, best video, best female and biggest fans at the ceremony, in the Odyssey Arena. Teen star Justin Bieber and R&B singer Bruno Mars were the other big winners, receiving two prizes each. Other winners were Katy Perry, who received the best live act accolade, Eminem, who won best hip-hop and Linkin Park, who beat Coldplay to take home best rock. Queen received the global icon award, with band members Brian May and Roger Taylor picking up their honour on the night.

UK - BASCA (British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors) has announced a partnership with JAMES (Joint Audio Media Education Support), the organisation which accredits higher and further education music and audio-related courses. BASCA will be joining the Association of Professional Recording Services, The Music Producers Guild and the UK Screen Association, who are already represented by JAMES.

JAMES will be expanding its scheme to music performance courses throughout late 2011/12 and BASCA will assist this process by providing professional songwriters to help with the assessment of song writing modules.

It has been confirmed that professional songwriters/composers Tim Fraser, Megg Nicol and David Stoll - all of whom sit on BASCA executive boards - will take part in the scheme.

More Metal - A re-formed Black Sabbath, including lead singer Ozzy Osbourne, have been announced as the second headliners for next year's Download Festival. The band, who last played together at Donington Park in 2005 as part of the Ozzfest touring festival, will then embark on a world tour. Metallica were announced as the first headliners of Download, which takes place at Donington between 8-10 June.

Ahead of their Download performance on Sunday 10 June, Black Sabbath are to record their first album with their original line-up for 33 years. The 1968 incarnation of the band, which also includes guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward, will record new material with producer Rick Rubin. Black Sabbath have released 18 albums since 1969, when they formed in Birmingham.

USA - At the LDI Show in Orlando, LumenRadio honoured TMB, their North American and UK distributor, with their CRMX distributor of the quarter award for Q2/2011. During the quarter TMB significantly increased sales and also produced excellent training videos and sales presentations for the entire CRMX product range, says the company. Feedback from customers and end-users also rated pre- and post-sales support from TMB's Los Angeles, New York, Toronto and London offices as "excellent".

TMB, together with specifiers, lighting designers, and other lighting professionals, has completed or initiated many exciting wireless CRMX projects during the quarter. The festival season was particularly busy with such noteworthy examples as Coachella in California, the Main Stage at Big Chill and the Live & 4Music stages at the Virgin Festival, both in the UK.

USA - Craig Dains, who served as an account executive for the Healy Group, a manufacturer's representative firm based in Richmond, Virginia, has died. The cause was complications from heart disease. He was 26.

Dains handled American DJ, American Audio, Elation Professional, Acclaim Lighting, Global Truss, and Arriba Cases on the East Coast. He is survived his companion, Melissa J. Clements, his son Craig Brian Dains Jr., his parents, and six siblings.

Dains was scheduled to take part in American DJ's Fall Learning Tour on November 16 and 17; the events have now been cancelled, with a statement from American DJ announcing they will be rescheduled. The company expressed deep regret at Dain's passing.

UK - LSi's Steve Moles reports: "I went to see a band last night at the recently re-opened York Barbican theatre. There was no stage set to speak of, well the drummer had a riser. Lighting was simple but more than adequate - four six lamp bars of Par64s across the back on a fly-bar, an equal number of 1kW Fresnel's across the front. There wasn't even a lighting desk out in the house. The PA was a bit more of the moment, Digidesign Profile plus stretch and the speakers resembled Turbosound and probably were, but I didn't take a close look because I was there for fun.

The show was Zappa plays Zappa; Frank's son Dweezil has hit on a notion to honour his fathers' legacy by reviving some of his more popular works. Zappa is the Brussels sprout of contemporary music; most assuredly an acquired taste, his output is not easy to digest but my god it's good for you.

Festival Winners - Glastonbury was named the UK's best major festival at this year's UK Festival Awards held at London's Roundhouse. The Somerset event was headlined this year by U2, Coldplay and Beyonce but is taking a break in 2012. Bestival, which won the best major festival prize last year, was named the 2011 fans' favourite.

Sonisphere, staged at Knebworth House, landed the best line-up prize following appearances from Biffy Clyro, Slipknot and Metallica. Paolo Nutini took the headline performance of the year for his performance at Latitude. The Secret Garden Party in Cambridgeshire took the best medium-sized festival prize, while Dorset's End Of The Road was named best small festival.

UK - PLASA is hosting an informal get together on Thursday 8 December for all manufacturing members. The aim is to have an open discussion on the key areas of exporting and product copying/IP and to create an opportunity for manufacturers to share ideas and experiences.

James Gordon of DiGiCo will chair the meeting and introduce a number of members who will outline their own experiences, before things move to an open discussion to see how members can share information and how PLASA can provide practical support.

The meeting, which is free to attend, will take place in the Roberts Building at University College London from 4pm-7pm, followed, by Christmas drinks at a nearby pub.

Spain - Christie has announced the opening of a Spanish branch in Madrid. Christie's new office is located in Boadilla del Monte, a town just 14.5 kilometres outside Madrid, and right next to Ciudad de la Imagen, an office and audiovisual leisure complex which is home to many TV channels, audiovisual producers, multiplexes, postproduction companies, film schools, audiovisual industry associations and film archives.

With a total surface area of 500sq.m, the new branch hosts a large showroom displaying Christie's latest technologies and products, including projectors and videowalls. It also has several rooms set aside for staging live demos, commercial meetings, seminars and training courses, plus a space dedicated to technical services. Reed brings with him extensive experience in the UK theatre lighting market, which includes a detailed understanding of all aspects of lighting design, as well as practical experience in purchasing, inventory and management.

In Harmony - The UK government has announced its first ever national plan for music education in response to Classic FM managing director Darren Henley's review of the sector. Henley's review, published earlier this year, made 36 recommendations for the minimum expectations of what any child going through the English school system should receive in terms of an education in music. One such recommendation was that there should be a comprehensive national plan for music education.

Launching the scheme, Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove claimed it "will deliver a music education system that encourages everyone, whatever their background, to enjoy music and help those with real talent to flourish as brilliant musicians" while culture minister Ed Vaizey said that the new resources would help "provide our fantastic creative industries with the next generation

World - It's been doing the rounds in one form or another for years, but it's not going away and companies are still at risk of being taken in by it. The 'Expo Guide' scammers send forms which appear to be from a trustworthy source - in this case the PLASA Show organisers, PLASA Events Ltd - and encourage companies to complete and return the form to validate their data with the event organiser.

Harmless enough, you are supposed to think, but the small print will tell you that by signing and returning the form you are agreeing to have your details listed on the Expo Guide website at a cost of 1271 euros per year for the next three years. And if you don't pay, they will pursue you.

UK - 2011 has been an eventful year for busy UK theatre consultancy Charcoalblue. UK - The nominations for the 12th annual WhatsOnStage.com Awards were announced on Friday 2 December - at a star-studded launch party at London's Café de Paris. Super Star - Madonna is to perform during the interval at next year's Super Bowl, it has been confirmed. The singer will take to the stage at the game on Sunday 5 February at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Her performance is expected to coincide with the release of her 12th studio album and she will collaborate with a team from Cirque du Soleil.
