Australia - When designing sound reinforcement systems for churches, there are two priorities that are of equal importance: high intelligibility and aesthetic unobtrusiveness. The latter is especially true in historic church buildings, where the architecture is often extremely valuable.

Sydney-based church specialist Clare Communications has good experience at designing such installations and takes full advantage of Turbosound's TCS and Impact series, which the company says combine high quality acoustics with a small, discreet enclosure and are specifically designed to fulfil the twin requirements.

Clare has recently worked with Matt Donovan from Audio Telex, Turbosound's Australian distributor, to design and install new systems into two very different Catholic churches in Australia - the Mosman church in Sydney and St Aloysius Catholic church in Cronulla.

UK - The PLASA Show (Earls Court, London, 10-13 September 2006) is now welcoming nominations for the popular PLASA Awards for Innovation, which will once again form a major attraction at the event this year. At last year's show, no less than 68 nominated products covering various product areas within lighting, audio, staging and AV, were displayed on the Innovation Gallery, which is sponsored by Lighting&Sound International magazine and situated right at the entrance to Earls Court's ground floor.

Judged on the grounds of their 'Innovation' alone, the nominated products are closely assessed by a panel of expert industry practitioners, chaired by L&SI magazine's Technical Editor, James Eade. There are nine awards available in total - eight Awards for Innovation of equal standing, plus an Award for Environmental Impact, which

Greece - Historically, the 'Prytanion' was the ancient Greek equivalent of a town hall, the place for discussing political issues as well as the venue for official ceremonies and the welcoming of important guests. In one of the oldest and most historic areas of Athens can be found the contemporary equivalent: In downtown Kolonaki, the Prytanion Restaurant is known as one of the most famous dining places in the Greek capital - a place for bon viveurs who have good taste in both food and music.

Now owners, Niko and Antonis Iliopoulos, have contracted QSC Audio's Greek distributor, I. Diamantopoulos SA to design and install the sound equipment for his new Prytanion 2, in the wealthy area of Kifisia, in the north suburbs of Athens. Project manager Sotiris Sofianos designed a system in which the processed audio signal is relayed though an all-QSC AcousticDesign PA.

Canary Islands - A landmark of Tenerife's night club scene, Sketch Club has been revamped with new lighting, video and audio equipment using D.A.S. Audio's self-powered sound systems. Veteran sound reinforcement and audio systems installation company, Oscar Molowny Sound & Lighting, was called upon to refit the legendary club's complete audio-visual systems components with new state-of-the-art equipment. For this task, the company chose two self-powered D.A.S. Audio Sub-18A speakers, two DS-115A and six DS-108As for their design and functionality, particularly suited for indoor sound reinforcement in places like clubs, discotheques, gymnasiums or any other PA application.

Not only a place to enjoy music, the Sketch Club remains an outlet for artistic expression as it can show independent film screenings, art exhibits, or fashion shows. The club's innovative approach is reflected

Canada - The town of Castlegar in Western Canada is home to about 7200 people. Last month, the Element Club, Bar and Grill - a 600 capacity club and the third largest licensed establishment in British Columbia - opened in the town. Martin dealer Skaha Sound of Penticton, British Columbia supplied a Martin lighting package along with LED lighting and conventional luminaires for the cub. Lighting design was handled jointly by cousins Florio and Fred Vassilakakis, who enlisted other family help as well. Florio comments: "The actual physical design of the club was done by my father, Nick, with collaboration from me, my cousin Fred and my brother George. My uncle John also helped out. It's a family company - what can I say."

Element is located on a main floor overlooked by a lounge grill. Above the dance floor and mounted directly to the ceiling for a clean look are eight M

UK - The BBC has selected Allen & Heath's iDR DSP system to form the core ofan audio switching system that is used at most large sporting events, including the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, European Championships, and Wimbledon this year. The digital system - comprising the iDR-8 mixer, plus iDR-in and iDR-out expander units - manages audio between the studio and remote commentators.

"We need to deal with up to 14 incoming sources at any one time so we use the iDR-8 with expansion units to give a 16x16 clean-feed matrix," explains BBC Radio Outside Broadcast Manager, Jonathan Wilson.Generally, commentary circuits are fed into the local control room on digital bearers, which could be Vandas or ISDN. These are subject to a noticeable transmission delay, which means that the return path of the 4-wire - back to the commentator's headphones - must be fed with a 'clean f

UK - Tecton luminaires from Zumtobel lighting are delivering a combination of style and functionality at landmark Sainsbury's store in London.

Situated beneath Sainsbury's business centre in Holborn, the Sainsbury's Local store required a lighting solution that would offer clean, direct illumination for a busy retail environment while maintaining unobtrusive impact. The answer was Tecton, a continuous row lighting system from Zumtobel Lighting.

Designed by Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners, Tecton is a flexible, cost effective lighting system which incorporates the needs of future technology, says the company. Well-balanced, uniform lighting vital to the supermarket retail experience is complemented by the addition of Proton, a flexible spotlight for directional light in highlight areas.

Tecton is an adaptable trunking system, meaning that data cables, power supplies and lighting

Germany - The Ostelbienhalle in Beilrode is proving to be a popular venue for sports and cultural events, following the installation of a line array sound reinforcement system which successfully meets the acoustic challenge of the hall's contemporary design. Berger Veranstaltungstechnik of Mehltheuer worked closely with Camco's fixed installations division to win the contract with computer simulations of the finished design.

The Ostelbienhalle is 44m long and 22m wide, equipped with a gallery all the way round. The area opposite the stage has been built in an attractive, contemporary design using concrete and glass. Though very pleasing to the eye, this presented a problem for balanced sound reinforcement. The Halle's management was looking for sufficiently dynamic musical reproduction, even SPLs and speech clarity throughout the venue - all within a tight budget.

Hungary - Budapest's Fine Arts Museum has purchased a new 24-channel Allen & Heath GL3800 multi-purpose mixer, which is part of a new mobile PA system that can be set up anywhere in the museum. The museum has a wide range of cultural programmes, including lectures on visiting collections, children's learning sessions, and every Thursday during late opening hours, a Jazz Salon.

"It was very important that the new console should serve many kinds of events, and therefore I specified a mixer that could manage 4-6 wedge monitor mixes and two effect mixes, and had 12-16 mic channels, inserts on each channel, up to eight groups, a matrix, and extensive metering. The GL3800 provided all of these functions and more," commented the Museum's sound engineer, Peter Rozgonyi.

The console is kept in a flight case with cabling to multi-pin connectors for easy installation and transp

USA - Global strategy and technology consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton of McLean, Virginia recently installed one of the largest Symetrix SymNet audio networks ever built for an upgrade in their 147-seat corporate meeting space known as Newman Auditorium.

"In 2002, we recognized a need to redesign and upgrade our AV systems to showcase the latest advances in technology and to better serve the complex needs of our clients," said Gary L. Hall, for Booz Allen. "So in 2004, we began execution of a project to overhaul thesystems in the auditorium."

The Newman Auditorium was originally constructed in the mid-1990s and installed with the current AV technology of that time. Ten years later, Newman Auditorium's aging systems were under constant use and stress so Hall, along with colleague Edwin Morman, worked with Rick Winde, national accounts director, for Profes

UK - Induction loop manufacturer Ampetronic is now running its training programme for installers, architects, consultants, facility managers and sales professionals.

The training programme covers a broad range of topics from DDA legislation and standards, specifying loop systems for different situations both simple and complex, amplifier specification, input audio design, loop installation, survey and commissioning to system maintenance.

"A good loop system requires careful design - far too many systems are installed without consideration of the loop configuration, the input audio systems and the need to provide intelligibility," explains Ampetronic managing director Julian Pieters. "As a result, we see many systems which fail to provide benefit to the hard-of-hearing or meet the requirements of legislation. We are committed to changing this through the educatio

USA - In 2000 when Bayside Chapel in Barnegat, New Jersey was making plans for a new church building, Bayside's technical director Bob Seibel put in a call to consultant Tom Young of Electroacoustic Design Services in Oxford, Connecticut. Six years later, the church completed the long journey of fundraising, breaking ground and construction by installing a new sound system featuring Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers which went live in June 2006.

"When we first met, Bayside Chapel was renting a local high school auditorium, but were in the initial planning stages for their own church," said Young, a well-known figure in electroacoustic design for churches. "Around the time, I had listened to several new loudspeakers designed by Tom Danley and was impressed with the pattern control, the phase response and their very natural sound quality. I've kept tabs on his designs

UK - SL Retail has completed a sound installation at the FX Leisure group of fitness clubs in the North of England. The company installed a Versatile Video Foreground music system into the FX club in Stalybridge, which allows gym users to choose from thousands of video tracks, while maintaining the correct ambience within the club itself.

FX leisure - which owns five clubs in the region - approached SLR with a dilemma. How to allow customers freedom to choose their own music, while ensuring that the music was suitable for the time of day, or type of activities going on? SLR suggested installing the Versatile Video system into the manager's office and fully profiling the music for every session of the day. A networked, separate remote selector unit was then fitted into the public area of the gym, where customers can choose from the selection of profile tracks available.

UK - The recent upgrade of Hatfield Swim Centre in the London suburb of Hertfordshire included a new communication system designed and installed by Stuart Graham's company Clarity in Sound, Light and Vision. Under the direction of health and fitness manager, Amanda Morris, Graham designed a four-zone system, selecting 26 QSC AD-CI52T ceiling speakers to be distributed across the two floors, powered by a QSC CX 204V, four 200W 100V line amp, and fed by two 5-play CD players. He also provided mood enhancement in the swimming pool with some inspired LED effects and a 26in LCD screen in the gym.

Graham thought long and hard about the multi-zoned design solution before coming down in favour of the white, easy-fit AD-CI52T's in this arduous environment. The AD-CI52T's feature an unusually wide frequency range and the ability to deliver higher SPLs. Coupled with wide and even dispersio

UK - Built by Sir Christopher Wren in the 1680s following the Great Fire of London, St. Bride's parish church in Fleet Street is one of the Capital's best-known monuments - and as a place of worship dates back as far as the 6th century.

Long associated with the printing and newspaper industries, St. Bride's today stages a wide variety of events - from normal Sunday worship to lunchtime concerts, weddings, conferences, editors' forums, lectures and memorial services.

The broadening nature of the programme meant that serious limitations were being exposed in the existing public address system, and broadcast/multimedia specialists, Interactive View, have specified the replacement of the old sound rig with 16 discrete, ultra-compact Martin Audio AQ6 loudspeakers, as part of an overall package. These are powered by three Martin Audio MA900 amplifiers and optimised using Allen & Hea

UK - A Victorian indoor market in the UK's rural West Country has been converted into a vibrant rock venue as part of a multipurpose remit, with the aid of QSC ModularDesign loudspeakers, process control and amplification.

The Cheese & Grain in Frome, Somerset dates back to 1874 when the building housed a busy market. The produce sold at the market was loaded onto railway wagons at the rear and transported to other parts of the country.

Before local dealers, Sounds of Frome moved in to bring the venue's sound reinforcement into the new millennium the venue had experienced a chequered recent history. Although several semi-permanent extensions had been added, the building deteriorated, and until 1997 was used as a temporary storage area. In the 1990's it was purchased by Mendip District Council and leased to Frome Town Council who undertook a programme of repairs and refurbishme

Canada - With seating for over 3000 congregants, the recently completed First Alliance Church is one of Calgary's largest and most modern houses of worship. Despite the venue's enormity, its state of the art audio and video systems bring a close and personal experience to all.

The systems were designed and installed by leading Canadian providers White Radio, with audio based around loudspeakers from Chester, Pennsylvania-based Community Loudspeakers. A centre cluster of three IFR77B three-way cabinets and two ISS118B subwoofers is augmented by left and right clusters of IFR34SB and IFR64SB three-way systems. Rear delay is covered by five more IFR64SB systems, with additional front-fill provided by six Community STS26B two-way boxes. A pair of ILF218B subs is installed under the stairs for extra bottom end.

Described by the judges as "magic in maple", the full award citation reads: "This building has been delivered on an exceptionally tight budget but is none the poorer for that. Set in the green belt and within earshot of the M25, the hall is conspicuously located in a prominent position on a site that slopes gently away from the loose collection of school buildings strung along the skyline.

"The Hall is the building. Externally, it is simple, econo
