Several years ago Théâter Zingaro, the French equestrian theatre troupe travelled to the United States and mesmerized sell-out crowds in Brooklyn with their ballet/equestrian art form. The troupe returned for exclusive West Coast performances of Triptyk: Dance of the Centaurs - top bill for the recent Eclectic Orange Festival, Orange County, California.

Bartabas, lighting designer and founder for Théâter Zingaro, and Loïc Merrien, lighting manager have made full use of 70 Selecon Acclaim Zoomspots and 24 Acclaim PCs in creating a surreal, living, theatrical picture, which aims to portray the horses as almost magical creatures. The precise beam control of the zoomspots and crisp edge and clarity of the PCs help provide the dramatic results demanded in this, the seventh Zingaro production created by Bartabas portraying the mystical relationship of man and horse.

Bandit Lites UK is supplying the king of horror-rock theatre Alice Cooper with a dramatic, and somewhat gruesome lighting rig for the European section of his current Dragontown World tour. The lighting designer for this spectacular heavy metal mayhem is Mick Thornton, who has designed a colourful contrasting show that captures a myriad of moods.

These include all the normal Cooperesque antics like the nightly baby massacre, a melange of cod violence and destruction, lunatics being straight-jacketed and hauled off to the asylum (bit like a day in the L&SI office). The onstage entertainment culminates with the guillotining of Pop Princess Britney Spears - the ultimate axis of evil in Alice’s dark world - as played by his daughter Calico.

Thornton needed a versatile lighting rig to match the intricate stage set and the manic pace of action onstage. At the aorta of the set is the

James Thomas’s new Pixelrange LED fixtures are making a high profile debut in the world of retail installations - as part of the current James Bond 007 window display at Harrods.

Spread across two full windows, the 007 montage includes the special agent’s fantastic silver Aston Martin V12 Vanquish and General Zao’s electric green Jaguar XKR from the latest movie Die Another Day. The latter vehicle is complete with reclining blonde spread-eagled on the bonnet! Other window props include 007 dummies, plus several plasma screens showing action from the various Bond movies.

The display is highlighting a special Bond video promotion offered by Harrods, celebrating 40 years of the UK’s favourite special secret agent. Paul de Ville, MD of Lightfactor Sales, was called in to design the lighting scheme for the windows. He was approached by AV installer Andy Evans from

When Audi launched the A8 at the British Motor Show this year, it wanted to steal the limelight from its competitors. Prima ballerina Darcey Bussell was called in and the rest is history. While most of us only saw Bussell on the front page of our newspapers, the guys at Fourth Phase London got to see her in the flesh.

Having already worked together twice on Audi projects, event organizers Pandemonium chose Fourth Phase London to supply lighting, including a selection of Source Four Pars and Zooms, a Jands Event Desk and ETC SmartPack portable dimming, for the occasion at Audi's London showrooms in Piccadilly.

As photographers surrounded Bussell, her luxurious 11 metre silk cloak fell away in a stunning reveal of both the car and Bussell's striking Scott Henshall dress, made of the same leather as the A8’s upholstery. Bussell, who is a fan of Audi's cars and has driven one since

Uno di noi', the new prime-time TV variety show by RAI UNO, hosted by veteran pop idol Gianni Morandi with Lorella Cuccarini and Paola Cortellesi, is now Italy’s most-watched Saturday night television programme, with peaks of over 10 million viewers. The programme's guests include top Italian and international artists, including Craig David, Mark Knopfler, Tom Jones, Anastasia, Phil Collins, Franco Battiato, Piero Pelù, Lucio Dalla and Daniele Silvestri.

'Uno di noi' is one of RAI's biggest productions in terms of both the complexity of the audio and lighting systems and the studio dimensions. The studio (which holds over 1,000 spectators for each show) is 85m long and 35m wide, with a total area of approximately 3,000sq.m, and is 14 metres high. The lighting rig, designed by Pino Quini, includes 350 motorized fixtures, of which no less than 264 are from Italian manufacturer SG

The Jiri Myron Theatre in Ostrava is one of the Czech Republic’s leading theatre venues, and the home stage of operetta, drama and ballet ensembles of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre. During the recent summer recess, the theatre partially upgraded its ageing control system, choosing ADB control and dimmer systems after comparing competitive products from various local and international suppliers. ADB’S Czech representative Zat Easy Control supplied the equipment.

The lighting crew and the head of the lighting department, Stanislav Dvorak, had already worked with a complete range of ADB equipment in the Antonin Dvorak Theatre, which is also part of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre. ADB’s top of the line console Phoenix 10 was chosen for the control desk. This allows enough flexibility to harness the mix of moving and conventional fixtures installed through

Coemar has unveiled a trio of ground-breaking, multi-purpose moving yoke fixtures. iSpot FLEX, iWash FLEX and iProfile FLEX form a significant development in Coemar’s Carbon Fibre series, offering the lighting designer total creative freedom, with greater light output.

Previewed at last month’s LDI show (see full report in the December issue of L&SI), these instruments are highly flexible, covering all lighting applications in the power spectrum (up to 2k) - within a single unit! With the light output reduced, the low power/low noise factor makes it ideal for operating in television studios. At the top of its power rating FLEX will be at home in any arena or stadium concert rig, and actually runs brighter than Coemar’s NAT 4k fixture.

The brainchild of Bruno Dedoro and Fausto Orsatti, the FLEX range was designed in Coemar’s laboratories in Castelgoffredo, Ital

The World Rally Championships were recently staged in Cardiff, and Stage Electrics was on hand to provide significant resources over a number of key sites for this major sporting event.

The Network Q Rally started on the 14 November and was timed to coincide with the switching on of Cardiff’s Christmas Lights. The main high street in Cardiff was closed to traffic from 10am, and there then followed a race against time to ensure all of the production was in place by 5pm. Stage Electrics provided main stage lighting on a Star Hire Mk1 Stage, as well as lighting to other areas.

The biggest focus of the Rally for spectators was the Super Special Stage, hosted in a purpose- built arena in Cardiff’s Docks. Stage Electrics powered the majority of all site services, as well as all spectator and emergency lighting. A total of 24 generators supplied through Power Electrics of Bristo

Lightfactor Sales has supplied lighting designer David Hurst of Full-On, and installers Entserv Ltd, with a variety of bespoke lighting, audio and show control equipment for the £1.2 million ‘Bond, James Bond’ exhibition at the Science Museum. It’s the biggest ever official James Bond exhibition, and arrived in London following a six-month installation at the Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford. The run at the Science Museum was designed to tie in with the recent launch of the new Bond film ‘Die Another Day’ (a full report on this appears in the December issue of L&SI).

The exhibition's main contractor, Themetech, was appointed by project manager Jacqui Wicks, in December 2001; they, in turn, approached David Hurst and Steve Richley of Entserv to assist in the huge project’s realization. Entserv have worked on numerous international

Artistic Licence has recently supplied Protocol-Converters for two large TV studio complexes, allowing the integration of DMX512 products with other control protocols. The ITN studios in Gray’s Inn Road have a mixture of Strand lighting consoles including 530, 300, and Galaxy units. A variety of dimmers, some using D54 and others DMX512, were connected to these consoles. The addition of four Artistic Licence Protocol-Converters has allowed equipment to be used in any combination. Protocol-Converters offer conversion of a variety of lighting protocols to or from DMX512. A Cue-Patch unit was also used, allowing the various studios to be combined in the most flexible manner.

Paul Flook, Head of Broadcast Engineering, told us: "The combination of the Protocol-Converters and the Cue-Patch has not only saved us money by allowing us to have a common control protocol but also allow

Two well-known names in the entertainment lighting industry have launched an "e-commerce website with a new concept" - Gearmarket UK - on 9 December. Keith Dale, ex-managing director of Celco and John Lethbridge, ex-managing director of Cerebrum Lighting, have been working with software developers for several months to come up with a concept that is possibly unique in the entertainment technology industry - a web-based customer loyalty scheme.

The Gearmarket site offers innovative new products and a selection of popular products from several key manufacturers from around the world. Buyers can shop and pay in Euros or Pounds Sterling. Most E-commerce sites present the potential buyer with a single price, invariably discounted - but one can never be sure how good the price is without comparing prices available elsewhere. On first sight, the Gearmarket website only appears to sh

ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls Inc) has promoted Dick Titus to the new title of President. Titus has held directorship and executive positions at ETC for over 13 years, including his most recent tenure under the title of Chief Operating Officer, from 1997 to 2002. Foster meanwhile continues his unchanged role as ETC CEO, leading the company's strategic development and concentrating on p

Lighting designer David Agress approached this year’s Radio City Christmas Spectacular with two specific problems in mind - how to maintain the artistic integrity of his lighting design for the show when there were multiple companies touring that same production simultaneously, and how to cut the load-in time at each move. Agress, working with programmer Paul Turner, turned to three separate building blocks and put them together in pre-production to accomplish both goals - the Prelite Studios in New York, XYZ positioning on Whole Hog II and WYSIWYG.

The team began work with the show file from the 2001 production. Two focus grids had been constructed, which the team called a Map. The first focus grid was built on the downstage 20’ of the deck, with 4’ centres stage left to right and 3’ centres downstage to upstage. The second grid was further upstage, with the

Could LDI capitalize on the renewed focus on business demonstrated at PLASA just a few weeks earlier?Ruth Rossington headed to Vegas to find out.

With PLASA providing a much needed fillip to the business, the question everyone wanted answering about LDI was whether it could pick up the baton and continue where PLASA left off. Well the jury’s marginally out on that one - certainly, the first day got off to a blistering start, but there were definitely times when things felt quiet on the show floor. That said, all the exhibitors I spoke to reported good levels of business and that’s the only yardstick a trade show should be measured by.

Much of the product on display had already made its presence felt at PLASA, but there were some real innovations and some noticeable trends. The undiminished homage to all things LED continues, to the point where Ellen Lampert-Greaux, part o

CMT - laser, projection and live event technology specialists - brought together a unique team to create a son et lumière spectacular at Millennium Mills, the derelict hulk of the former Spillers flour mill at Royal Victoria Docks, East London. The event may have been a world first, as a result of its use of a wireless LAN link to control all the various technologies involved.

CMT was approached by event organizers Mask Event Design & Productions to supply the design and technical infrastructure for an impressive opening show to kick-start the four-day World Travel Market exhibition running at ExCel - sited across the River Thames from the Mills. CMT’s Gino and Ram Malocca and Tim Fothergill jumped at the opportunity to stage the event, which had many technical and logistical challenges, and also included unorthodox live elements such as speedboats and helicopters.

Australia’s Gold Coast is home to the Movie World theme park - the brainchild of Warner Bros, and the only theme park in the southern hemisphere dedicated to the film industry.

Given the renewed interest in all things Scooby Doo, the park has launched a new dark ride - the Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster - a $13 million indoor rollercoaster inspired by the feature film which was shot at Warner’s Movie World Studios.

Coaster cars carefully replicated from the film launch visitors on a hair-raising journey, complete with laser, lighting and sound effects, animatronics and a kaleidoscope of colour, depth, height and trickery of dimension.

One of the central players in the ride’s design was Australian laser specialist Laservision Macro-Media. The installation required a complete reversal of laser display rules: whilst discreet laser effects have previously been employed

Known as much for his elaborate outdoor shows as his music, Jean Michel Jarre recently added to his reputation for groundbreaking outdoor performances with an extraordinary show in northern Denmark.

On 7 September, he held an out-of-the-ordinary event at Gammel Vrå Enge windmill park near the Aalborg in Denmark. Titled ‘Aero’, the show’s central theme was ‘energy and environment’ and bizarrely, the wind played the lead part, not only as energy, but also as a carrier of sounds, images and messages.

The concert consisted of 16 Jean Michel Jarre numbers, both classics and new material, with a scenography that was radically different from his previous concerts. The show featured a number of visual treats such as the windmills ablaze in light, and pyro exploding in sync with the music.
