USA - One of the festival season’s early gatherings took place 25-26 February when Miami’s Virginia Key Beach transformed into a pop-up beach club for We Belong Here.
Datum Creative was responsible for the site, production and lighting design and turned to Elation Professional's range of IP-rated luminaires to carry the production visually and fulfill the festival organiser’s ‘no video’ brief. Technical Arts Group (TAG) served as lighting vendor.
We Belong Here prides itself on offering a one-of-a-kind, intimate music experience with Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic as the backdrop. The no video brief, while uncommon for shows of this stature, allowed for a 360-degree design that fully immersed guests in the music and gave the audience room to wrap around what was essentially an island main stage.

USA - Rock band Underoath hit the road on its Blind Obedience tour featuring Ayrton Mistral fixtures from Sonus Pro. ACT Entertainment is the exclusive distributor of Ayrton lighting in North America.
Based in Moorestown, New Jersey and with offices in Raleigh, North Carolina, Sonus Pro is a lighting, video and audio rental, production and design house specialising in touring, anime and gaming, and conventions. For Underoath’s Blind Obedience tour the company is furnishing all the lighting and audio equipment and Sonus Pro’s director of touring accounts, Lenny Sasso, is serving as the lighting designer and programmer.
Underoath kicked off the 24-city, cross-country tour, which features special guests Periphery and Loathe, in Silver Spring, Maryland on 3 March wrapped in Nashville on 2 April.

USA - Stars gathered at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena night for Love Rising, a benefit concert for Tennessee Equality Project, Inclusion Tennessee, OUTMemphis and The Tennessee Pride Chamber.
Bandit Lites provided the lighting for the evening, where performances included Allison Russell, Maren Morris, Sheryl Crow, Amanda Shires, Brittany Howard, Hozier, Jake Wesley Rogers, Jason Isbell, Joy Oladokun, Julien Baker, Mya Byrne, The Rainbow Coalition Band and YOLA.

UK - First performed in 1986, Willy Russell’s one-woman show Shirley Valentine is the joyous, life-affirming story of a person who got lost in marriage and motherhood but who has a secret dream – as well as an airline ticket to Greece.
The show has recently been revived at the Duke of York’s Theatre in a new production directed by Matthew Dunster and starring Olivier Award and BAFTA winning Sheridan Smith. The lighting designer is Lucy Carter, who approached White Light to supply her lighting rig.
This production of Shirley Valentine marks its first West End revival since its original run in 1988, which then subsequently transferred to Broadway. Croatia - Singer-songwriter and composer Gibonni played two major arena concerts in Zagreb that sold out in minutes, with over 40,000 fans flocking to see the showman where they were treated to a spectacular stage and lighting design by Sven Kučinić involving 140 Robe moving lights.
These high-profile shows signalled the kick-off of a tour by the artist which will continue later in the year.
A series of scenic set pieces was designed by Neven Stojakovic based on the theme of clocks – an idea from Gibonni himself – and time, loosely related to and translated from the title of the last album. Using these as references, Sven added the trussing and lighting, and in collaboration with Neven, developed the shapes and placement of the fragmented LED screens.

World - Astera Titan Tubes and PixelBricks are woven into the elegant lighting design by Bruno Poet and Ricard White for Icelandic singer / songwriter Björk, who is touring her Cornucopia theatrical show globally through 2023.
This is an example of using lighting inventively to enhance a much larger mixed-media ‘bigger picture’ that helps capture the many and varied expressions, emotions, moments and messages of Björk’s work.
The show concept was initiated by the artist herself and developed with creative collaborators James Merry and Argentinian film director Lucrecia Martel. The eye-catching and cerebral video content was produced by Tobias Gremmler and the set is designed by Chiara Stevenson.

USA - ADJ has expanded its sales team in the United States with the appointment of Luis Fermin as technical sales support. Bringing to the role ‘a wealth of knowledge and experience’, Luis will strengthen the existing team, providing valuable technical support to customers both before and after orders are placed.
Luis has already spent seven years working for ADJ, in the company’s Customer Service Department, where he has developed an extensive understanding of the ADJ product line. His main focus in this new role will be ADJ’s DMX software and hardware controller lines.

UK - TLS will feature its new PixNet range of multi-protocol LED controllers at PLASA Focus Leeds, 9-10 May, Royal Armouries.
This compact and powerful LED pixel interface will control up to 8160 RGB pixels from a unit that measures 110mm x 85mm x 28mm and weighs 215 grams. The PixNet accepts Artnet, sACN and converts the data to SPI, DMX or TTL to control digital LED pixels that are either clocked or unclocked.
Control units are powered via POE or by a local 5-24 Volt DC power supply, they are compatible with all major industry pixel mapping software including Madrix, Chromateq, LED Mapper and Light Jams, and will also work as a 4 universe DMX node.

South Africa - Renaldo van den Berg, a lighting designer and owner of Tryfer Industries has come to rely on Vectorworks for his designs and drawings. He recently upgraded to Vectorworks 2023 and has also invested in a grandMA3 viz-key from DWR Distribution to assist his pre-programming workflow.

Lighting Designer Caleb Franke of IPS uses the dynamic lighting to help sculpt the inspiring story while wowing audiences with a variety of visual effects.
The Thorn is a modern-day Passion play, a theatrical depiction of the life and death of Jesus, yet with a modern touch. The immersive theatrical show combines modern dance, music, martial arts, aerial acrobatics, and emotionally powerful performances, with state-of-the-art lighting and visuals. The play is known for its stunning visual effects and has been staged yearly since 1998. The current 10-city tour launched on 1 March in Loveland, Colorado, and ends on 8 April in Miami.

Australia - Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul is no stranger to change. On Saturday December 18, 1965, when the curtain went down on a double billing featuring Stephen Boyd in Genghis Khan and Carl Gonzales in The Little Ones, the classic venue, then known as the King’s Theatre, closed its doors after more than 40 years as the main cinema in this seaside village located 60km south of Sydney.
Less than three years after the theatre stopped showing films, all seats were removed, a concrete floor was laid in the stalls area, and the venue was reborn as Skateland. In 2007, long after its days as a roller rink had ended, the venerable building began anew again as a multi-purpose live performance venue.

France - The recent robotics exhibition at the Eurexpo Lyon in France saw the use of 20x Prolights Astra Wash19Pix and 24x Astra Wash7Pix lighting fixtures, at the FANUC stand, a Japanese automation company.
Camille Roblin, technical director at Toulouse-based events company SAS Melomane, commented: "I think Prolights is a wonderful brand with a great quality of fixtures. France - Recently renovated, the new Eurosport France set said goodbye to conventional fixtures to make way for the latest generation of LED luminaires. The compact and versatile Lonestar from ETC was the automated fixture of choice for Eurosport’s technical team and the lighting company Ar'Krys.
The main filming location at Eurosport France is a physical set with a large 20sq.m LED wall as a backdrop. Despite its 45sq.m of usable surface, it has everything you’d expect of a larger set, and can accommodate up to six presenters, columnists, and guests on the three benches and a standing position. Overhead, a grid of wash lights enables different colour combinations. It is complemented by 20 Lonestar fixtures, intended primarily for lighting the talent and effectively rendering skin tones.

Sweden - Ayrton has announced the appointment of Topstage – and a familiar face – as its new, exclusive distributor for Sweden.
Linnea Ljungmark will be leaving her position as Ayrton regional sales manager to form a new company, Topstage, which will become the new Ayrton distributor for Sweden from Monday 3 April 2023.

Israel - Contemporary multipurpose venue Gray in Modiin is filled with colour and atmosphere thanks to a versatile Robe LED moving light rig installed to enhance this new and lively 900-capacity entertainment space that opened in 2021. Managed and run by the municipality, it is popular and successful in offering a wide range of live music and performance shows in a supper club format.
The lighting, LED screen, trussing – including two elegant circles above the audience – and rigging was supplied and installed by Danor Theatre & Studio Systems working in conjunction with consultant Dror Herrenson, who assessed the requirements and compiled a tender based on a robust, practical, and flexible LED lighting system to cover a multiplicity of events.
