Singapore - Singapore National Day featured 5,000 performers in a mass tableau on a floating platform that was 120m wide by 83m deep, and a grandstand holding over 30,000 spectators. Lighting design was created by Paul Collison who controlled the show via two grandMA full-size, two grandMA ultra-light and 16 x MA NSPs.

This year saw the introduction of grandMA video as a major part of the scenic landscape. 1,800sq.m of custom made LED netting framed the back of the stage. Four grandMA media servers controlled the screen. "The influence this had on the view was amazing," said Collison, "I've always liked playing with video and lighting, however I've never had the chance to work with it on such a massive screen and have total creative freedom to entwine it into the scenic landscape. UK - New DMX, RDM and Ethernet lighting tools from ELC will be on show in the White Light Zone in Earls Court 2.

Two of the new products, the DT125 and DT229, are designed for users looking to incorporate the RDM Remote Device Management bi-directional communication extension to the DMX512 standard into their lighting rigs.

RDM is designed to operate over existing DMX cabling, but requires new DMX splitters that can deal with the new communication from the lights back to the lighting controller. Both products are DMX/RDM splitters, DT125 offering one DMX input to five outputs, DT229 offering two DMX inputs with eight outputs. Both products also include a USB connector, allowing easy firmware updates if required as the DMX or RDM standards are revised over time.

UK Stage One recently headed to ExCeL in London's Docklands for the 2008 British International Motor Show. Brought in by client, International Motor Industry Events (IMIE), Stage One was asked to realise the designs of Hstudio for the special exhibition area entitled, The Ultimate Collection.

Stage One helped to transform the Platinum Suite into an exclusive invitation-only exhibition area, displaying 19 models including Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bugatti. Stage One's main involvement was blacking out the room, using steel and gauze panels and constructing plinths on which each car was positioned.

The oval plinths were high spec with a seamless black gloss mirrored laminate finish. Attached to each plinth was a totem containing a lightbox graphic that displayed information about the car. Digitally printed double-sided corporate identity banners then topped each totem.

Eire - With environmental awareness at an all time high in the Republic of Ireland, Greenled LED lamps is making waves across the Irish Sea. The Gloucestershire-based sustainable lighting company is currently working with a number of architects, specifiers and developers in Ireland, including sustainable construction company, Monti - the developer responsible for the innovative Watermint apartment development.

Located close to Cabinteely Park, eight miles from the centre of Dublin, the Watermint development is a collection of 13 apartments, built using a host of energy-efficient features, including over 400 Greenled LED lamps.

Singapore - As in past years, this year's National Day celebration was on a grand scale with large numbers of Martin automated lighting fixtures used to bathe the Marina Bay venue in swathes of celebratory colour. 320 MAC 2000 Washes, 60 MAC 2000 Wash XBs and 20 MAC 2000 Performances were utilsed. Lighting production was by Showtec Group of Singapore.

The 60 MAC 2000 Wash XB fixtures formed the bulk of the stage's front wash for the National Day event. "With the XB's I'm getting more level on stage and much better control, and the new lens has taken them to a whole new level," says lighting designer Paul Collison."They were sent directly from Martin's Danish headquarters and gave much more control over the 100m throw to the stage.

Reggae News - A statue of late reggae legend Bob Marley has been unveiled in a small Serbian village during a rock festival as a token of peace in the Balkans. Musicians from Croatia and Serbia were joined by rock fans for the midnight ceremony in Banatski Sokolac.

Organisers said Marley, who died in 1981, "promoted peace and tolerance in his music". Serbia recently erected a statue of iconic film character Rocky, while Mostar in Bosnia has one of Bruce Lee. Another Serbian village put up a statue to actor Johnny Weissmuller, best known for his depiction of Tarzan. Serbian musician Jovan Matic and veteran Croatian rock star Dado Topic took the covers off the Marley statue at the Rock Village event.

UK - For the 21st consecutive year, Pearce Hire provided all the lighting and power at the 44th annual Cambridge Folk Festival. This year for the first time, festival organisers and key suppliers worked with Julie's Bicycle to find ways to reduce the carbon impact of the festival.

The four day festival featured live musical performances and entertainment to an audience of 10,000 people. Pearce Hire supplied all site power and lighting for bars, food stalls and tower lights for the car parks and campsites. A pair of synchronised generators powered the main stage and the broadcast compound.

An array of Pearce Hire's moving and generic lighting all controlled with Avolites Pearl Desks and ART 2000 dimmers help set the scene across three stages, reflecting the variety of acts performing.

This involves six venues and a total of 20 different performance spaces including the Urban Garden, a new outdoor area adjacent to the main C venues hub on Chambers Street. Italy - Not only is 2008 the year of Giacomo Puccini's 150th anniversary celebrations, it is also the 54th year of the Puccini Festival. And the festival now boasts a new open-air stage lit with help from ETC on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli in the composer's birthplace of Torre Del Lago, northern Italy.

As well as lighting the opening concert by La Scala Philhamonic Orchestra and Chorus and a tribute to Puccini by the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, an ETC Congo jr control desk - with a second as backup - was used for Turandot, Tosca, Madam Butterfly and one the composer's lesser known operas, Edgar, which featured a set design by UK artist Roger Dean and costumes designed by his daughter Freyja.

At PLASA08, the Philips MSR Gold 1500 FastFit will be on display for the first time, designed in a fixture from Italian manufacturer SGM; the Giotto 1500 family. This new high wattage FastFit lamp concept has an arc gap of 5.5mm and an efficiency of 82 lumens per Watt (which is unparalleled within the industry for this level of lamp wattage), combined with a high colour temperature of 6000° Kelvin and an excellent CRI of 80. South Africa - Johannesburg-based DWR Distribution has been appointed as the official South African distributor for UK-based specialist LED fixture manufacturer, i-Pix.

DWR's Duncan Riley says: "The i-Pix range is something totally different to anything else currently offered by LED manufacturers, and I see massive potential for it in South Africa."

USA - Dave Matthews Band (DMB) is once again touring the US. This year's tour presents a showcase of state-of-the-art lighting effects including 38 PixelPar 90s and 41 PixelLine 110s. Lighting designers Fenton Williams and Aaron Stinebrink have worked with DMB for many years, and enjoy experimenting with the latest lighting fixtures available.

Stinebrink notes: "We choose fixtures primarily for how they will incorporate into the overall design. UK - Centenary Square in Bradford's city centre was transformed into a magical garden for five days in August, with the help of Lancashire business Water Sculptures.

A 5m diameter pool of dancing water fountains was designed and installed by the company, offering a unique spectacle of water, music and lights amongst the greenery of other displays and live entertainment at Bradford's 2008 Garden Magic event.

Carrie Underwood recently co-headlined with fellow Bandit client and country music star, Keith Urban. Award-winning lighting designer, Seth Jackson designed Underwood's rig so that it could coexist with Urban's set.
