D.A.S. Audio created its Autopol directivity measurement and post-processing platform in 1994 to provide high resolution polar measurements. A key element of the system was a large group of in-house developed algorithms that took care of the numerous computations. This included the PolArray module for performing array simulations with an accuracy unknown to commercial software. Due to the ‘in-house’ nature and the cryptic user interface of PolArray, the challenge became turning the overwhelming amount of information generated into a meaningful tool for the end-user when designing arrays.

Joe Brusi, Autopol director, explains: "People frequently ask us about what the coverage of such and such array would be for a given speaker model. Really, there is no quick answer, since it involves calculating the interference between the different boxes in the array. Even though, th

At the recent NSCA exhibition in Denver, Colorado, Mackie Designs introduced a high performance, flush-mounted ceiling speaker for the fixed installation market. The new SP400C achieves superior dispersion and pattern control over conventional coaxial designs thanks to a unique high-frequency, exponential wave-guide originally developed for Mackie’s award winning studio monitors. The wave-guide combines with a 6.5-inch driver that has been optimized for smooth frequency response and seamless transition through the crossover point to redefine the price/performance ratio for commercial ceiling speakers.

"This is a very exciting new product for Mackie," stated Costa Lakoumentas, corporate director for global installed product and market development for Mackie Designs Inc. "The SP400C has been designed to be extremely contractor-friendly and easy to install while benef

Clay Paky has introduced a number of new products. The main news from the Italian manufacturer is the completion of its range of ‘Silent Version’ (SV) projectors, with the introduction of the Stage profile Plus SV - and the ‘basic’ version of this fixture, the Stage Profile 1200 SV.

Crown International announces that IQ for Windows software version 5.1 is now currently available for free download. The new application is an upgrade from version 5.0 released last fall and offers two key improvements over its predecessor. First and foremost, IQ for Windows v5.1 fully supports Crown’s six new CTs Series amplifiers, including the four-channel CTs 4200 and eight-channel CTs 8200, all of which debuted at the NSCA Expo in Denver.

Secondly, and very importantly, the new software now implements a drag-and-drop methodology for the creation of custom user control panels. For example, by simply clicking on a desired control, such as a fader, on the standard control panel and dragging it onto the control surface, v5.1 automatically links the component into the signal chain. To group faders together, all one needs to do is take another fader from a different control panel

Wybron has revealed the latest development for its Autopilot II: automated camera control. The company's popular control system, created to turn regular moving lights into automated followspots, now also allows a camera to follow moving objects or people automatically.

First demonstrated at PLASA 2001, where visitors to Wybron's stand could see themselves captured on a camera controlled by the Autopilot II, the system should prove invaluable to smaller television or film production companies, where staff are at a minimum. Easily operated, a transmitter carried by a presenter or actor sends out signals to receivers, which are connected to the Autopilot II controller. Mounted onto a moveable platform controlled by the Autopilot II software, a camera will then follow the person carrying the transmitter, ensuring they're kept in the frame. The Autopilot II was used with High End Technobeam

Europe's most popular boy band, Westlife, is out on the road again, touring Europe and the UK with a show that leaves the girls speechless and everyone else breathing easy, despite the use of heavy fog. That's because Westlife production manager Steve Levitt and co-lighting designer and lighting director Barry Halpin, have chosen to incorporate a low lying fog effect from Jem's newest heavy fogger, the Glaciator. The two Jem Glaciators used for the Westlife tour were supplied by Bandit Lites.

The elaborate show is set in the round, with a stage set-up that features a pentagon-shaped staircase centered around a mid-riser. The challenge during one song was to have heavy fog cascade down the staircase from the top of the set on all five sides. The solution was to place two Jem Glaciators in the somewhat cramped staging area beneath the set, each Glaciator fitted with a ducting adaptor to

Star Hire (Event Services) Ltd has set an event industry precedent by gaining LANTAC approval for its SS11-09 (Mk2) mobile StarStage. LANTAC is the Local Authorities National Type Approvals Consortium, a scheme which over 90% of the 550 Local Authorities in the UK belong to. In essence, certification under the scheme means that Star Hire no longer has to have the complex engineering calculations checked by local authorities at every show. This saves the clients, licensing authorities and themselves significant time and work in the tight schedules of the live events industry. Local Authorities and clients can be sure that the stage is safe, merely by possession of the signing-off certificate. This guarantees that the stage has been erected in accordance with the LANTAC approval.

To gain the certificate the stage and its documentation were examined in detail by one local authority, whic

Navigator Systems Ltd have come up with a solution which will ensure that companies who own ‘demo’ stock achieve the best possible return on their investment. Following several months of discussions with sales representatives, Navigator discovered that for some keeping track of the ‘demo’ stock had turned into a logistical nightmare. Items such as mixing desks, projectors, plasma screens and lighting consoles had either been forgotten or simply gone missing.

By adding several new features to its rental management software system RentalDesk, Navigator Systems have now made it possible to search quickly and easily for the ‘First Available Date’ for the ‘demo’ item required. Thus, if a company requests a mixing desk for a five-day period in June, the sales rep can check whether it’s available for that period and if it isn't, give the

The very first Midas Legend 3000, sporting serial number 001, has been shipped to EML, one of the largest rental companies in Europe. Headquartered in Brussels, EML also has offices in Stockholm, Madrid and Amsterdam and a busy summer season ahead with tours, shows and festivals all over Europe.

Ampco Belgium, Midas's distributor in Belgium, sold the console to EML. "EML is one of our biggest customers," said Ampco's managing director, Karel de Piere. "They already have two XL4s, two Heritage 3000s, a Heritage 1000, an XL3 and a couple of Venices, so it was only right that they be first in line for the Legend when it started production." By the time Midas's David Cooper went to Belgium shortly after the console had been delivered, it had already gone out on tour with Dutch band Bløf. Indeed EML was so taken with the desk that within two weeks the company’s p
