UK - A K-array loudspeaker solution has been deployed at London’s Royal Society as part of a major upgrade of its AV systems. Supplied by UK distributor 2B Heard and installed by Whitwam AV Integration, the loudspeaker system provides uniform audio coverage of the Society’s multi-purpose lecture theatre while blending discreetly into the venue’s environment.
The Royal Society is the world's oldest independent scientific academy, dedicated to promoting excellence in science. Founded in 1660, it was granted a royal charter by King Charles II and today fulfils a number of key roles: promoting science and its benefits, providing scientific advice for policy, and fostering international and global co-operation.

The Netherlands - When Dutch rock band Krezip reunited after a 10-year hiatus they wanted to make a big impact, so their management Friendly Fire asked Andre Beekmans of The Art of Light to create a signature lighting and video production design for three epic shows at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome.
Assisting him in the task were over 150 Robe moving lights - a mix of Spiiders, BMFL Spots and BMFL Blades.
The stage design, including a thrust connecting main and B stages, was already decided on when Andre joined the team, but he had an open brief for lighting and video.
Six 9m high by 2.5mwide upstage video columns defined the upstage area, and these moved sideways on a tracking system making up multiple configurations. Austria - For more than 20 years, Allen & Heath has provided audio support to Viennese rockers, Wiener Wahnsinn, who perform around 120 gigs each year from local shows to some of the biggest open-air festivals across Europe.
Freshly equipped with a dLive C3500 and an SQ-6 for FOH and monitor duties, Wiener Wahnsinn have recently wrapped up their latest Doppelt oder Nix (Double or Nothing) tour, where the new systems were deployed for the first time.

USA - Victory World Outreach has been ministering in Colorado Springs and around the world for 40 years. A ministry with churches in the US and in 10 different countries, Victory World Outreach has resided in their current building - a remodelled grocery store - for 27 years and in that time has made no significant changes to their main sanctuary. That all changed in 2019 however when they decided to modernise their AVL set-up and chose integrator and Elation Professional dealer Second Opinion Audio (SOA) for the audio, lighting and video upgrade.

USA - Proline Entertainment LLC, which provides lighting production for the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks in the Fiserv Forum, has installed 16 Ayrton Khamsin-S LED profile luminaires for the team’s current season.
The Khamsin-S fixtures mark Proline’s first Ayrton acquisition products. “We were in the market for LED-driven fixtures that had the capability for multipurpose functions and the ability to outperform the standard lamp fixture,” explains Proline’s owner and lead lighting designer, Aaron Zimmermann. “Our long-time ACT Lighting representative, Aaron Hubbard, brought almost the entire Ayrton product line to our shop. We did a shoot-out with the Khamsins and some other brands, and the Khamsins outperformed them all. We fell in love with them.”

USA - There’s more to the NAMM Show than expansive product displays and informative educational sessions. The annual winter gathering at the Anaheim Convention Centre also serves as a showcase for musical talent.
This was clearly evident last week as recording artists from a wide range of genres like Animals As Leaders and country music’s Josh Gallagher took to the Grand Plaza Stage in the pavilion at the convention centre entrance for a series of day and night performances sponsored by Yamaha.
Endowing the stage with brightness and colour to give it a tour-like feel for the 100,000 or so show attendees was a powerful rig supplied by 4Wall Entertainment that featured a collection of 58 Chauvet Professional Maverick MK3 Wash fixtures.

Saudi Arabia - A Swedish House Mafia show staged by Live Nation Middle East at the Diriyah Festival in Riyadh featured a specially designed touring stage. It was created by SHM show designer Samuel Tozer, working under the Vision Factory brand, recreated in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by Gabriel (Gabe) Fraboni, founder and creative director of LA-based design studio PHNTM LABS.
Full technical production - audio, video, lighting, rigging, trussing - for the Diriyah Season Stage, the Festival’s headline stage and international music venue, was supplied by Dubai-headquartered mediaPro International.
This included a Kinesys automation system, used to move three 5m diameter signature circular trussing rings made from Alutek 40x40cm heavy duty product, each symbolizing the three artists - Steve Angello, Axwell, and Sebastian Ingrosso - making up the Swedish House Mafia.

Belgium - An ArKaos Stage Server Pro and Kling-Net protocol were used to save thousands of DMX channels and provide a realtime harmony between lighting and video effects onstage for a massive Viva for Life concert fundraiser event organised by Belgian national TV channel RTBF.
The visual design for the stage that ran for multiple days in Tournai city square, featuring a diverse line up of top Belgian artists, was created by RTBF’s Didier Piron.
Selected highlights of the event were broadcast live on TV and it attracted massive crowds into the heart of the city each night to enjoy the entertainment. Also integral to the fundraising efforts was a 144-hour non-stop RTBF radio broadcast with the presenters locked into a glass-fronted studio adjacent to the stage!

Czech Republic - Klub Letka, a multi-purpose venue in Prague, recently installed a Martin Audio BlacklineX powered system as it sets out to host a programme of live theatre and music, movie nights and more.
According to Jirka (Jiri) Hes, programme manager at the venue, the site was formerly a dedicated puppet theatre and later turned into a acting school theatre. “But we wanted to deliver a broader scope of performance and arts, including folk, alternative and jazz, to a wider public, so refurbishing the place and installing a professional sound system was essential.”
The BlacklineX Powered system, comprising four Blackline XP12 loudspeakers and a single Blackline XP118 subwoofer, fitted their budget and immediately exceeded their expectations.

Qatar -UK lighting specialists Ventola Projects has completed a high-profile project in the Middle East at the Sheikh Abdullah Palace in Doha.
Business in the region has been booming for Mick Ventola and his team since they supplied and installed lighting to the Royal Palace of Sheikh Al Thani back in 2016.
Secured via Ventola’s Egyptian distributor, this latest project brief was to provide an all-in-one lighting effect within the palace’s leisure facility, using white lighting, UV and colour change to create the right mood and atmosphere.
Mick and his team chose to use the VAvR Lighting System, along with LED48RG-UV-W fixtures and CS16 LED spotlights - a combination which provided the right effect to complement the luxurious surroundings, whilst adding a touch of fun and excitement.

USA - Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship (OCBF) was founded in 1976 by renowned pastor and author Dr. Tony Evans. Since those early days, the upward trajectory of the church in Dallas has blossomed it into a mission-driven mega-church with nearly 10,000 congregants.
The venue seats around 3,280 people, shaped in a semi-circle, with large balconies and unobstructed sight lines. But as time passes, so too does the efficiency of audio components while the need for increased acoustical quality grows. The bottom line: the old equipment was outdated and no longer up to par. Along with upgrades to its lighting and video systems, installed by master AVL integration firm Clair Solutions, the church determined its best path forward to meet current and future needs was to install a new sound reinforcement system.

USA - Struck by the TurboRay’s face and features in the promotional industry media, production/lighting director Keith Smith called High End Systems’ Terry Heisler for a demo. “I had to have some,” explains Smith.
The McCallum Theatre for the Performing Arts has been entertaining and educating residents and students in Palm Desert since 1988. The staff thrives on providing state-of-the-art equipment for the seasons’ programs and for technical training.
Smith purchased eight of the special effect LED units through 4Wall Entertainment in Las Vegas, and immediately debuted them to dazzle their December gala fundraiser.
“I kept wishing I had more as the show was going on,” Smith notes. “I placed them downstage on the apron edge and used them for their effects and as eye candy.”

Sweden - The life of the late Swedish DJ, songwriter and producer Tim Bergling (better known as Avicii) was honoured recently with a tribute concert in Stockholm. Nearly 60,000 fans turned up at the Friends Arena to pay their respects - an all-time Stockholm record for a single show.
The show was the result of a request by Tim’s family following his passing. He wanted a celebration of the artist’s music presented as the fulfilment of an idea Tim had to have his music performed by a live band and orchestra.
Among the all-star line up of guest artists who also paid their own tributes were Aloe Blacc, David Guetta, Kygo, Nicky Romero, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Adam Lambert, Rita Ora - plus long-time Avicii collaborators Carl Falk, and Vargas & Lagola.

UK - The Warehouse in Leeds will bring back live music to the fore later this month, building on a legacy that includes performances by U2, Oasis, The Stone Roses and Soft Cell.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, The Warehouse has had a quarter of a million pound investment into the production infrastructure and now boasts three rooms with a capacity of 600 for live music and 1100 for DJ-led events.
Curated by TEG | MJR, the live music 2020 programme will showcase a mix of touring artists and local musicians on a regular basis, with the first events kicking off later this month.
The Warehouse relaunch weekend will kick off with a live performance from singer-songwriter Badly Drawn Boy on 23 January, followed by two sold out performances from Terrorvision on 7-8 February.

Austria - Back in 2016, Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) with its chief sound engineer Athanasios Rovakis, started investigating the possibility of moving the venue’s audio and video distribution to fibre. At first, the opera house modernised its audio system, purchasing a network fibre solution based around Optocore X6R-FX analogue devices and M8 MADI switch to bring together additional signal sources from distant places in the house, and to share signals for broadcasting.

UK - When Peter Daffarn, MD of Photon Beard was contracted to design, supply and install some studios at YouTube London, he brought Doughty Engineering on board to provide a range of kit.
“Dave Errock of Wave Science Technology first got in touch with Photon Beard - initially just for some consultancy and to prepare the tender documents,” explains Daffarn. “However, it wasn’t long before we were asked to manage the entire fit-out. For a company like YouTube, we needed a solution that not only performed well, but looked great too. And that’s why Doughty were my first port of call.”
YouTube wanted a functional yet aesthetically pleasing suspension system so Doughty supplied a range of curtain tracks, hoists and grids - some off-the-shelf and others made especially for the project. “Working with Dan and his team we came up with a solution that YouTube loved.

Czech Republic - Transmission is Europe's most spectacular trance music festival, with a legion of loyal fans who return year on year. As usual, the 2019 event was enhanced by haze from MDG generators, which showcased the spectacular lighting and laser shows that accompanied the artists.
Transmission is held annually in Prague at the O2 Arena and attracts thousands of fans from over 70 countries. The line-up for Transmission 2019 included trance legends such as Blastoyz, Cosmic Gate, Darren Porter, Ferry Corsten presents System F, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Key4050, MaRLo and Thomas Coastline.

Russia - Astera’s wireless LED Titan Tubes helped the action come alive in Moscow for performances of The Worker and Kolkhoz Woman, a comic opera by Pavel Kaplevich, staged at the Zaryadye Concert Hall.
The opera is dedicated to the history of one Russia’s most famous monuments, The Worker and Kolkhoz Woman, a 24.5m-high sculpture by Vera Mukhina, renowned globally as an example of socialist realism and art deco. Two figures - male and female - are leaning forward holding a hammer and sickle above their heads. The work was designed for the Soviet Pavilion at the 1937 World’s Fair in Paris and was subsequently moved to Moscow. It is instantly recognisable as a powerful Soviet-era symbol.

USA - Anyone enjoying Maroon 5’s New Year’s Eve special shows at Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas would have witnessed the elegant geometric lines of Brian Jenkins’ production and lighting design, for which he utilised over 200 Robe moving lights.
The band have frequently played this December slot at the venue in recent years, and the objective for 2019 was to present a new and fresh visuality for the occasion, different from any of their touring shows. This year the New Year shows were ahead of an upcoming album release and 2020 world tour.
Jenkins had wanted to “go geometric” as a design concept for some time, and this presented him with the perfect opportunity, together with the relative luxury of two days for the get-in and set up.

UK - Event production services & hire company Light Design supplied Claypaky Sharpy Plus moving spot lights for the recent 2019 UK Festival Awards, hosted at London’s Troxy.
A long-time user of Claypaky products, Terry Lewsey, MD of Light Design, was very keen to add the Sharpy Plus fixtures to his rental stock. UK - Bristol punk band IDLES enjoyed a heavy 2019 global touring schedule, and this continued into the UK up to the end of the year.
It was the band’s first full production tour in support of the A Beautiful Thing: IDLES Live at Le Bataclan CD recorded a year ago. The band’s long-serving FOH sound engineer Chris Fullard requested Martin Audio’s MLA loudspeaker, supplied by Capital Sound.
This was rigged at the 1,900-capacity Barrowlands in Glasgow, but more notably at Alexandra Palace’s 10,250-capacity Great Hall.
Capital project manager David Preston, a self-confessed IDLES fan, had first met Chris Fullard when he was house engineer at the Scala in London, and was aware of his love for MLA.
“MLA had sounded really good at the festivals I had done,” confirms Fullard, “and so I called David at Capital. I had a choice of two PA’s but I

China - New Year’s Eve presents a broadcaster battleground in China as the main networks compete for the most-viewers crown. Satellite channel Hunan TV rose to the challenge, commissioning a countdown-to-2020 live show featuring big-name artists backed by party-enhancing lasers, lighting effects and video content.
Shanghai-based Honest AV was brought in to deliver a video solution for the ambitious programme, specifying 10 Hippotizer media servers to drive visuals for more than 50 acts and events during the evening. The content was a mixture of live feed to IMAG screens and pre-made content by Ndimensions.
“Two Boreal+ and four Boreal DVDL Media Servers were used to play the video material, three as the main output and three as hot backup,” explains Fei Zheng from Honest AV. “A further three Boreal+ machines were used on the VJ elements of the show.”

France - Playing a rich and colourful role in the history of its region’s wine making (it was once owned by legendary vintner, the late André Lurton), the estate of Couhins-Lurton was prominently featured in the recent 100th anniversary celebration of the Grands Moulins de Bordeaux.
Accentuating the intricate architectural qualities of the château during this event was a collection of wireless, battery powered Chauvet DJ lighting fixtures installed by Benson’ Audiovisuel.
