USA - In May, some of Elation Professional’s newest, cutting-edge lighting gear was used by lighting designer Daniel Cortes of Everlast Productions on the Haitian Compas Festival in Miami, one of the largest Caribbean festivals in the United States.
The Haitian Compas Festival is a yearly celebration of the Haitian community that features popular musical acts along with traditional Haitian food and other facets of Haitian culture. After 18 years as a one-day event, this year’s festival was held over two days from 20-21 May at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami.
For Miami’s Haitian community, Compas was an opportunity to put the méringue sounds of konpa (compas) music in focus while partying beneath the bright lights of a truly contemporary rig. This year an all Elation rig provided the visual dynamics with some of the company’s newest lighting products in action:

UK - Since 2007 HL Audio has covered all the audio and lighting needs for the Glastonbury Avalon Cafe Stage.
Based in Frome, Somerset, the company began a long association with German sound reinforcement specialists HK Audio, first purchasing an Actor DX system and haven’t looked back since. Over the years, they have used two linked Actor DX systems, and at times a Projector system.
These days, directors Tom Pepler and Will Angeloro at, finding the full sound and amazing dispersion perfect for the eclectic mix of acts that frequent the Avalon Cafe Stage at Glastonbury. From rock bands to 10-piece funk bands, folk acts to world music, the LTS Systems deliver a crystal clear and highly efficient sound, making both FOH and monitor mixing a breeze.

Canada - Technology from audio specialist Sennheiser will help deliver an immersive audio experience for visitors to the upcoming Revolution exhibit at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA).
The exhibition, which originated at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, looks at the social fabric of the late 1960s - the pivotal period when youth culture initiated a new sense of identity, solidarity and idealism, bringing people together to question established power structures. Like the V&A, the MMFA employs Sennheiser’s AMBEO immersive 3D audio technology and guidePORT audio guide system to deliver a fascinating museum experience and bring the spirit of that era back to life with an unforgettable soundscape.

Russia - Top Russian rapper Баста performed in front of a sold-out, 35,000-strong crowd at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium, setting a new record for an in-the-round performance by a Russian artist. Front of House sound engineer Ruslan Dmitriev chose the Yamaha Rivage PM10.
Rivage PM10 has already established a good reputation as a stable, reliable system in the Russian touring market. Ruslan needed a console that was big enough to manage the complex, 360° format show and also be absolutely certain that he wouldn't have any problems. Alongside the console, he also specified a PC with AIC128-D Dante interface for a 66 channel, 96kHz recording to Steinberg Nuendo Live.

UK - Victoria House in London’s Holborn was home to the 2017 NEC Solutions Showcase and Green Hippo’s UK team played a key role in delivering one of NEC’s sweetest exhibits to 1,500 trade visitors.
A Hippotizer Boreal Media Server created a ‘virtual sweet shop’ set-up, using a total of 11 screens, three Datapath X4 video splitters, and playing back 4K video. The resulting display immediately grabbed the attention, and show visitors immediately grabbed some time with Green Hippo’s on-hand team of technical experts.
The NEC-hosted event is a valuable opportunity for Green Hippo to demonstrate its cutting-edge line, as well as meet and greet hundreds of members of the trade. Europe - Metal supergroup Soen has just completed a month-long tour of Europe carrying a compact dLive touring rig from Allen & Heath’s new dLive C Class range.
The tour visited 19 venues in three weeks including dates in France, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
Comprising a C2500 Surface, CDM32 MixRack with a DX32 expander rack, the FOH engineer purchased the system especially for the tour to provide consistent FOH sound on the road.
“On tour, I have never had so many compliments about the sound quality as when I travel with dLive! The system’s onboard FX and compressors are amazing, and without doubt, the best I have ever used,” comments FOH Engineer, Peter Droneberger.

USA - Destination Imagination, the non-profit organization that works to inspire and equip the world’s next generation of innovators, held their annual Global Finals event.
Bandit Lites once again facilitated a lighting package for the enormous competition that centres on promoting logic skills and inspiring creativity, while encouraging where more than 17,000 attendees including 8,000 students from 21 countries gathered to competeenthusiasm in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This year’s Global Finals featured guests included CW television actor Victor Rodriguez III, singer-songwriters Levi Kreis and Drew Gasparini along with NASA astronaut, Dorothy “Dottie” Metcalf-Lindenburger.

UK - Lighting designer Nathan Alves has a penchant for invention and thinking out of the box, so he has enjoyed the challenge of developing the lighting scheme for the new John Mayer Search for Everything world tour which just finished its UK and European leg.
The set / production design created by Sam Pattinson of Treatment Studio has a strong cinematic feel and is heavily video orientated.
Adding an appropriate and effective lighting aesthetic to compliment this environment with its strong geometry and definite lines energized Nathan who specified exactly 100 fixtures.
However, with 40 of these being Robe’s BMFL Spots, this brought massive scope and plenty of flexibility, and as everyone knows, it’s not just about throwing kit at a stage, it’s about imagination, technique and how the tools are used!

The Netherlands - One of the Netherlands’ biggest dance festivals took place recently during the Pentecost weekend - and to bring the main stage alive were no fewer than 60 of PR Lighting’s premium PR5000 Beam and Spot moving heads.
Fully featured, and one of the most advanced fixtures on the market, they were largely responsible for the spectacular light show that enhanced performances by acts that included headliners Headhunterz, East & Young, Showtek and Nicky Romero.
The PR Lighting fixtures were supplied by a collaboration of Innovation Audio, 4AV Technical Productions and Rolight, the PR Lighting distributor of the Netherlands. Freshtival provided two days of music and camping in Enschede’s Het Rutbeek recreational park 4AV’s Merijn van Kruijsbergen’s was responsible for the overall design, in collaboration with the event’s LJ, Gerwin Sanderman.

Europe - The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (‘Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid’) has a very important task: to collect, preserve and make audio-visual heritage accessible for future generations. In addition to an archive containing more than one million hours of television, radio, music and film from 1898 until the present day, the institute also has a permanent exhibition displaying a selection of highlights to the public.
In a recent move to optimise the lighting concept within the exhibition space, Lichtpunt Theatertechniek replaced the previous halogen lighting fixtures with nine Chauvet Professional Ovation E-260WW IP fixtures. Interestingly, it was the all-weather capabilities of this fixture that made it ideal for the conditions of the install.

UK - George Orwell’s all-time classic 1984 was read in its entirety at Senate House, University of London last week. Produced by Libby Brodie Productions in association with The Orwell Foundation and UCL’s Festival of Culture, the book was read live by over 50 leading cultural figures in an epic 12-hour read through. Having worked on numerous bespoke performances, WL was called upon to provide the lighting, sound and video equipment.
1984 LIVE took place on Tuesday 6 June and was part of the UCL Festival of Culture 2017. The reading was streamed live to libraries across the country, as well as online where it was being watched across the globe. The reading was directed by Hannah Price with a lighting design by Robbie Butler, a previous recipient of the ETC Award from the Association of Lighting Designers.

UK - Immersive Spanish party brand, Elrow, has made its Welsh debut with the spectacular Singer Morning dance event in Cardiff - in the grounds of Glamorgan Cricket Club's Sophia Gardens. The picturesque gardens played host to a capacity 6,500 dance fans on the Sunday afternoon.
Reinforcing the sound for headliners Eats Everything and Patrick Topping on May Bank Holiday Sunday was James Jewry from Cheshire-based Soundteks, who brought in Manchester based VME with their award-winning Martin Audio MLA and MLA Compact loudspeaker arrays.
James designed and specified the MLA system on behalf of the dance giant Elrow, purely based on the city centre location of the site. Nine elements of MLA (and an MLD Downfill) were flown on either side of the stage, while 16 MLX subwoofers were set across the front in a broadside cardioid array, 11 front facing and five rear. Six

USA - grandMA2 consoles and switches played a key role in networked lighting and video control for SAP’s Sapphire NOW/ASUG Annual Conference at the Orange County Convention Centre in Orlando. Lighting designer Paul Palazzo and programmer Paul J. Sonnleitner have worked on the event since 1999 and have been using MA consoles for the last 12 years.
The conference has grown to encompass three days of keynotes, workshops and an exhibition floor. America’s SAP Users’ Group (ASUG) helps customers connect with each other, understand SAP products and services better and learn how to get the most from their investment.
“The conference has become exceedingly large attracting some 20,000 participants,” says Sonnleitner, “and spans the entire convention centre. We need solid network technology to handle it, and it’s nice that we can stay within the MA family to do so

UK - Richard Martin Lighting (RML) supported lighting designer David Gibson in lighting the BBC coverage of the General Election, Election Results 2017, aired on BBC One.
Lighting designer David Gibson was called upon to light the BBC coverage that ran from when the polls closed last night all the way through to this morning. The overnight coverage was presented by David Dimbleby, who has anchored the BBC’s coverage of every General Election since 1979. Huw Edwards took over this morning as lead presenter recapping what had gone on through the night and leading the viewers through the day’s events, including the formation of a new government.

Croatia - The Spaladium Arena in the Croatian coastal town of Split was the venue for the 2017 Porin Music Awards (AKA 'the Porins'), a glamourous, high profile evening which honours the achievements and talent of Croatian artists across a diverse mix of genres and 30 categories and is broadcast live on the national HRT network.
Lighting designer for this year was HRT's Marko Foretić who chose to work with a moving light rig over 160 Robe fixtures, supplied by one of the leading Croatian rental companies, Promologistika. He worked closely with Promologistika's Miro Hrg who designed the set and video elements.
Marko's ideas for the lighting were developed following in-depth conversations with Miro and the event's director, Danko Volarić.

USA - After 14 years of prayer and patience, Grace Orlando church recently opened the doors of its first designated worship space. A critical consideration from the outset was pristine and even audio coverage across all 600 seats, and thanks to a carefully researched sound system built around Adamson Systems Engineering S-Series loudspeakers, that’s exactly what they got – and a lot more.
“Full coverage is something we’ve lacked over the past 14 years at our part-time facility,” comments Worship Pastor Chad Wyatt, who boasts a background in production technology. “We wanted everyone to hear the word clearly and feel like the music is totally immersing them in the new space.”

USA - An extensive renovation project at Crossgates Baptist Church in Brandon, Mississippi, saw a complete sanctuary AVL refresh over the course of two years. Beginning in 2015, AVL systems integrator Paragon 360 designed and installed all new AVL systems, custom scenic and staging elements, motorized rigging systems, and acoustical treatment.
And the centrepiece of the project, which was completed in January 2017, is a RoomMatch loudspeaker system from Bose Professional. Paragon 360 chose the RoomMatch system because of its track record in attaining high speech intelligibility and touring-level music quality in acoustically challenging spaces.

USA - Karen Zacarias’ Destiny of Desire, An Unapologetic Telenovela in Two Acts is aptly subtitled. The raucous, freewheeling “play within a play” makes absolutely no apologies as it follows the lives of two Mexican woman (one born to wealth, the other to poverty) who are switched at birth.
Parodying the telenovelas commonly seen on TV, the play unabashedly takes audiences on an emotionally charged journey that is at turns, harrowing, hilarious and ultimately thought provoking. Intensifying the myriad of moods that runs through this fast-paced play is a richly textured lighting design by Pablo Santiago that features Chauvet Professional Rogue R2 Wash fixtures.

The Netherlands - The Aus Berlin techno festival set the night on fire at Spoorzone Tilburg, Holland, enhancing the post-industrial scenarios of the old railway depots with the modernity of the 'blades of light' projected by Katana.
"In our projects, we use a large number of DTS fixtures, with which we are fully satisfied,” - said First Impression, the rental company that installed the lighting infrastructure for Aus Berlin. “Katana's performance was exceptional; nothing compares to its ‘blade of light’.”
Aus Berlin's line-up included the best of the new generation of Berlin DJs, such as Adana Twins, Mandy, Wankelmut, Egbert and Yetti Meissner.
The upgrading and expansion works of the Tilburg railway station in Holland have transformed the vast old buildings into multi-functional structures, suitable for a wide range of spectacular events.

USA - Three hi-energy sold out shows at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium launched the new Martin Garrix live show which will tour around the world for the rest of the year as the young Dutch superstar DJ and music producer continues to wow crowds.
Equally hot in appearance is the lighting and visuals show created by production designer Gabe Fraboni which features 138 Robe moving lights – 90 x Spikies, 20 x Pointes and 28 x BMFL Spots.

UK - After 40 years as the leading British advertising awards, this year the British Arrows combined their Craft and Awards shows into one big ceremony –The British Arrows. Held at Battersea Evolution on 31 May 2017 and hosted by TV comedian Rob Delaney, over 72 Campaign Arrows and 32 Craft Awards were handed out to the cream of the advertising crop. Hawthorn was on hand to deliver the full technical production for the evening.
Hawthorn has delivered the technical production for the British Arrows Awards since 2011, with the design and production values increasing in specification and complexity each year. With this year seeing the two events combine into one special show, the team at Hawthorn worked closely with the British Arrows producers to deliver a stand-out experience for the 1000 guests.

Ireland - KV2 Audio’s large format VHD Point Source system helped provide Good Vibrations for The Beach Boys. Having made their debut over 50 years ago, The Beach Boys continue to tour extensively and their recent Irish stop saw them play to over 2,000 people at the striking Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.
Tasked with providing audio reinforcement for the event were KV2 Audio’s Irish partners Just Lite Productions - who once again turned to their inventory of KV2 products.
The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is a commanding space with 2,111 seats spread across stalls, first and second circles. Just Lite opted to deploy a flown double VHD System with down-fill and extra low frequency reinforcement courtesy of the VHD 2.21 2x21” subwoofer.

USA - Bandit Lites returned to the ocean for another spectacular weekend at the Hangout Music Festival, where the beach provided a picturesque backdrop for the thousands that made the trek to the sandy shores.
This year’s line-up boasted a wide range of artists, such as Mumford & Sons, Chance the Rapper, Phoenix, Major Lazer, Weezer, MGMT, Sigur Ros, Band of Horses, Franz Ferdinand and Charli XCX.
While the musical acts coupled with a weekend at the beach were reason enough to attend Hangout, festival goers could also experience a host of activities ranging from beach volley ball, an ocean side Ferris wheel, beach club, arcade, puppy kissing booth and even a legitimate wedding chapel.

Poland - Gamers from around the globe gathered recently once again in the International Conference Centre in Katowice, for the world’s biggest annual online gaming event: the Intel Extreme Masters.
With this year’s event seeing gamers compete in various games such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and StarCraft II, the task of designing a suitably impactful staging concept fell for the second year in a row to Polish production house, Aram. This year’s secret weapon came in the form of 16 Chauvet Professional STRIKE 1 and 16 STRIKE 882 strobe fixtures, which Aram incorporated within a spectacular visual production including live video gaming and pyrotechnics.
