USA - Every lighting designer knows how important it is to keep tour managers happy. So, when the TM for Animals As Leaders said he wanted to minimize the number of fixtures on the floor package for the band’s 22 city summer tour while still delivering the multi-dimensional looks that the group’s intricate mix of progressive music demands, lighting designer Victor Zeiser took his words to heart.
The owner of Squeek Lights, Zeiser delivered what the manager wanted and then some, with a lean, but abundantly productive rig that includes two strobes, three batten fixtures and four Maverick MK2 Spots from Chauvet Professional. Zeiser fit the whole lighting rig on one pallet that’s transported in a bus-towed trailer for the tour, which supports the band’s Top Ten Album The Madness of Many.

Switzerland - A compact Allen & Heath dLive S Class system has been installed in Teatro Sociale in Bellinzona, Switzerland, following an upgrade to its audio equipment. Supplied by Battaglia Light Services, the system consists of a S3000 Surface equipped with a Dante network card, and a DM32 MixRack.
Built in 1846, Teatro Sociale is one of Switzerland’s most historic theatres, which was refurbished 20 years ago following a period of neglect. The venue hosts theatrical productions, and also a variety of concerts, from classical to rock.

UK - Attracting over 5,500 attendees, Europe’s largest digital marketing conference, the Adobe Summit EMEA 2017 returned once again to ICC ExCeL London. Creative technical event production expert, Hawthorn was once again chosen by Taylor Bennett Partners to deliver the full technical design and production for the two-day event.
Focused on the future of digital marketing, delegates from Europe, the Middle East and Africa gathered to soak up tips and insights from the Adobe Marketing Cloud and its partners. Led by group creative director Pete Harding, Hawthorn was tasked to bring Taylor Bennett’s impressive vision to life, delivering the technical production for the main conference plenary, exhibition space, break-out rooms and the muchly-anticipated Summit Celebration.

UK - Drapes and rigging specialist Blackout played an integral role in the London Symphony Orchestra’s annual open air concert in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 21May.
Thousands of people packed into the square in glorious sunshine to hear the LSO, conducted by Valery Gergiev, play three pieces by Rachmaninov. Once again sponsorship from BMW ensured the event was free to the public.
Blackout worked on the event for the fifth time, providing rigging and drapes, installing four truss structures next to the main stage to support two large screens and two PA towers, with two smaller structures at the back of the square in front of the National Gallery, used for relay screens.
A combination of Thomas 52 Supertruss and Prolyte Truss was used, with extra Blackout truss forming the main entranceway. Prolyte was also used for the on-stage lighting rig, and Blackout supplied

Russia - Funktion-One’s distributor for Russia, Edelweiss Audio, has completed the sound installation at Krasnodar Stadium. The project led to the loudspeaker manufacturer breaking new ground with a specially designed Evo enclosure.
Edelweiss Audio was initially invited to take part in a listening test alongside companies representing most of the pro audio manufacturers active in arena and stadium sound. This was the beginning of a detailed specification process. Having impressed the owners, Edelweiss and Funktion-One were shortlisted and invited back for a second round of listening tests.
“A number of factors, not least the geometry of the stands, meant that a horn-loaded solution would work best,” explains Edelweiss Audio’s technical director Andrei Kremenchugskiy. “We were looking at up to 90-degree coverage, which is very hard to achieve effectively usin

Azerbaijan - The opening ceremony of the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games, produced by Catherine Ugwu’s Betty Productions, featured spectacular visuals throughout the show.
Responding to an initial brief to deliver projection across the back wall and floor of a stage covering half an athletics stadium, Creative Technology (CT) specified 78 Panasonic DZ21 projectors driven with VYV’s Photon Media Server system. While the original brief and specification regarding the projection area and projector count was a little smaller than the Rio Olympics ceremony that CT were involved in last year, many of the same challenges applied.

Belgium - One time professional actor Stan Van Samang made his musical breakthrough back in 2006 winning the music talent TV show, Steracteur Sterartiest (VRT). While the Belgian artist has recorded a string of successful albums since, it’s arguably his live performances – with intimate audience interaction – which have garnered him notoriety. Tasked with bringing the most out of these live performances on Stan’s recent tour of Belgium, LD Bart Rogge specified 16 Chauvet Professional Maverick MK 2 spot and 24 R2 Rogue wash fixtures to stunning effect.
As Stan Van Samang’s live shows are all about interaction between audience and artist, Rogge decided upon a visual interaction of his own, that between the Maverick MK 2 spot and 24 R2 Rogue wash fixtures.

USA - Serving the greater Washington DC area since 1971, RCI Systems is a full-service event production house and systems integrator that has built its success on two “greats” - great people and great gear. In the house of worship community, that has often taken the form of partnering with Jonathan Lesane and SYXA Services, most recently on a pair of installs featuring L-Acoustics ARCS WiFo (Wide and Focus) systems at Spirit of Faith Christian Centre and Mount Pleasant Church and Ministries.
Lesane works with a large number of churches in the DC and Baltimore areas, but he’s not a “typical” systems integrator. UK - Former England and Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand co-owns Rosso Restaurant and Bar in Manchester, UK, and has ensured that Rosso’s patrons are treated to a sophisticated, yet effortless, hip experience.
When a break in the action permitted a sound system swap, Danley Sound Labs’ new UK distributor – aptly named Danley UK – stepped in to assist Manchester-based live sound and installation company Neuron Pro Audio. The Neuron staff designed and installed a Danley system using their patented Synergy Horn loudspeakers and a Tapped Horn subwoofer, which now brings the sonic experience at Rosso in line with its upscale menu, décor, and service.

UK - Now open at the V & A Museum, The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains is the first international retrospective of one of the world’s most pioneering and influential bands. The exhibition offers an immersive and multi-sensory journey through the career of Pink Floyd, chronicling their music, design and staging, from the 1960’s through to the present day.
Following the company’s work on last year’s Exhibitionism, the Rolling Stone’s exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, White Light was called upon to oversee the lighting installation and supply the lighting equipment on this occasion.

Ireland - The Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary in the Archdiocese of Armagh, Ireland, was founded in 2012 by Cardinal Sean Brady, Archbishop Emeritus of Armagh, to train priests who are both diocesan and missionary for what is known as the New Evangelisation.
Archbishop Eamon Martin, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, recently presided at the official opening of the Seminary’s new premises, the former De la Salle brothers’ residence in De La Salle Terrace, Dundalk. The buildings have been completely refurbished to provide housing, worship and study areas for the sixteen young priests from eight different countries currently in training.

The Netherlands - One of the most historic buildings in Goes, Netherlands, Slot Oostende is a former castle located in the old centre of the city. It opened to the public in April this year as a multipurpose venue, with a Yamaha Commercial Installation Solutions (CIS)-based audio system meaning its spaces can be used for many different purposes.
Some original parts of Slot Oostende survive, while others have recently been rebuilt following excavations in 2009. This mixture of ancient and modern architecture provides a pleasant atmosphere, which was ideal for a restaurant, meeting venue and brewery producing the venue’s own beer.

UK - Blitz|GES has secured a multi-year deal with event venue, the Design Museum. Blitz|GES was awarded a preferred supplier contract, placing it on the museum’s accredited production list.
The museum hosts a range of events each year, from conferences and awards nights, to major brand activations and product launches. Blitz|GES has worked with the venue since its move from Shad Thames to Kensington in late 2016, and will continue to deliver full AV and technical event production services to its clients.

UK - April saw the 61st National Student Drama Festival (NSDF) take place at the University of Hull, forming part of the city’s UK City Of Culture celebrations. Rental company SLX provided a range of Yamaha digital mixing consoles and - as a little light relief for participants - Yamaha Commercial Audio UK co-sponsored Yamaha/SLX/NSDF-branded jackets, awarded to the most inventive photos posted by aspiring sound engineers on social media.

Ukraine - Elation Professional played a major role in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv with over 800 lighting products used as audience and stage lighting by lighting designer Jerry Appelt and Eurovision Song Contest head of production Ola Melzig.
Elation Professional served as an official technical event supplier to the 2017 show with a large portion of the intelligent lighting package made up of Elation lights. In the rig were 351 Elation Paladin hybrid strobe/blinder/wash lights, 132 Platinum FLX hybrid moving heads, 140 Platinum 1200 Wash and 70 Platinum Seven moving head LED wash lights, along with 110 SixBar 1000 LED battens. Germany - Markus Heinzel of Liquidstudio is the proud owner of the first Audient ASP8024 Heritage desk to be installed in Germany. Based in Freiburg, he has recently upgraded his professional recording and music production studio, wanting to “rely on my technology, so I can get on with making music”.
It was last year that his finances finally allowed for the improvements to his space, for which the biggest investment was the Audient. UK- Underneath the Victorian railway arches in London’s Shoreditch district lies Cargo, one of the capital’s edgiest late-night bar and club venues. While the venue’s genuine Banksy graffiti art-filled courtyard is a magnet for art aficionados and tourists alike, the club itself has been busy building up a formidable reputation of its own thanks to an eclectic music programme.

Finland - Finish singing sensation Saara Aalto – aka the Snow Fairy – played a sold-out homecoming gig at Helsinki’s Hartwall arena and Green Hippo technology ensured a great view for all. USA - Bon Jovi rocked the house with the band’s This House Is Not For Sale Tour. The tour’s complex staging featured a grandMA2 full-size console provided by PRG and was in support of Bon Jovi’s eponymous thirteenth studio album released last fall.
It was the first to feature Hugh McDonald and Phil X as full-time band members. The tour picked up the album’s theme with a set featuring a stylized house under construction.
“The tour represented the next chapter of Bon Jovi,” says Spike Brant, the show’s creative producer and designer and CEO of Nimblist. “It was a dynamic show – a nod to old fashioned rock ’n roll with a fine art, metaphorical abstractness. Nothing about the design was fake, and with no fascia, the machines became the tools to tell the story.”

USA - For more than 25 years, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been closely linked with Dave Rat who has manned the live concert mix for the Grammy Award-winning quartet since 1991. During that period, Rat has successfully grown his own tour sound company (Rat Sound) and been awarded two patents for innovative live sound products. As of February, however, the celebrated engineer has now passed the reins of mixing the band to Sean “Sully” Sullivan, another industry veteran having most recently manned front of house for Rihanna, Atoms For Peace and Beck.
Camarillo-based Rat Sound is continuing to provide the FOH control and monitor package for the band’s current Gateway World Tour, as well as the PA system for all of the band’s US dates.

Europe - Popular Belgian / Dutch girlband K3 are on the road again for an extensive live schedule through 2017 reaching out to their young and enthusiastic fanbase with a completely new lighting and video design originated by Luc Peumans of Genk-based creative practice, Painting with Light.
This is the first full tour with the ‘new’ K3, since a TV competition staged last year found three new faces to take over from the previous band members, two of whom had been part of the foundation of the K3 phenomenon in 1998. This was followed by a transition tour featuring all six K3 girls performing both together and in their two separate line-ups.

Ukraine - Internationally renowned lighting designer and director of photography Jerry Appelt specified the new Claypaky Scenius Unico as the main stage workhorse fixture for his richly composed lighting design for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, hosted at the International Exhibition Centre, Kyiv, Ukraine.
This year, 42 countries participated in the global TV phenomenon, each supported by a striking stage and light show embracing video, special effects and a procession of scenic props and costumes, all of which combined to make the lighting of this world famous event an ever more challenging proposition.
