USA - Barix reports that Nickelodeon Universe, a seven-acre amusement park located inside Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., is now using multiple Barix Audio over IP and automation devices for on-demand audio playback, live music streaming and message repeating.

The mix of Barix Instreamer encoders, Exstreamer decoders and Annuncicom IP intercom/audio streaming devices, programmed by DataNab of Burnsville, Minn., provides Nickelodeon Universe with a varied and flexible approach to delivering audio entertainment, ride information and public safety announcements to every corner of the theme park. The migration to Barix also enables remote monitoring of the entire system from anywhere inside or outside of Mall of America, the largest retail and entertainment complex in the United States.

£15m bonus - The Isle of Wight council has estimated the island's annual music festival is worth £15m to the local economy. The annual event was restarted at Seaclose Park in Newport in 2001 and has since become one of the biggest festivals in the UK. About 50,000 enjoyed the event this weekend with the Pixies and Neil Young headlining on Sunday. The council said it had helped change the island's image and brought millions into the economy each year.

John Metcalfe, Isle of Wight Council's assistant director for economic development and tourism, told BBC News: "The festival is hugely important to the island, especially to Newport. We estimate it is worth at least £10m spent in the Newport shops, and that is just from people from off the island visiting for the festival. USA - Every year, RTS & Telex invite users from the nuclear power plant community to attend a workshop on outage communications. Held at the specialised training academy inside RTS & Telex's Twin Cities headquarters, the two-day workshop guides attendees through all aspects of intercom configuration and usage.

Britt Bowers, regional sales manager for RTS Intercom Systems, was one of the presenters at the workshop this year. "This was our highest attendance ever. We had approximately 30 nuclear plants represented, in addition to contract suppliers." says Bowers. "Attendees take away knowledge [of the intercom system] and application capabilities that help them coordinate operations in their plants more simply, creating a safer working environment."

UK - An interactive video bar has opened in Islington's Essex Road, with Martin Audio's architectural AQ loudspeakers handling all the audio output.

Owner Aria Ariantalab has spent close on £1 million fulfilling his dream to create Bar Sequence, a 75-capacity environment (with separate pavement seating) in which everyone from media creatives to the gamer generation can interact in a social environment.

A former electronic engineering lecturer and technology consultant, Ariantalab says: "Anyone can come in with a memory stick and plug into one of our laptops. "Media artists, graphic designers, photographers and photographic agents can show off their work - and as for DJ's and VJ's, we can assess these at our Wednesday 'Open Deck' nights."

UK - A popular Central London pub has turned back the pages of history and reverted to its origins. The imposing plaque on the fascia reveals that the hostelry on the corner of Marylebone Lane and Bentinck Street was christened The Coach Makers Arms back in Victorian times, although it was latterly trading as The Conduit of Tybourne and as Irish pub, O'Conor Don.

That was before gastropub specialists, Large Bars, took it over, and following extensive refurbishment of the three trading floors, reopened it as The Coach Makers of Marylebone in April this year.

Large Bars directors, Lee Bradshaw and Sarj Chotai, tasked Sound Division with specifying an audio infrastructure as part of the design overhaul.

Austria - A combined Allen & Heath iLive and iLive-T system was used at the recent opening ceremony for the Vienna Festival, held in the city's Rathausplatz.

The inaugural event saw the debut of a specially-commissioned composition exploring the emotions and depicting scenes that characterise Vienna and the kindred cities of Paris, Lisbon and New York, traversing musical styles including blues, classical, Portuguese fado, French accordion, and jazz and soul from the USA.

Having used an iLive-144 system to manage the FOH orchestra mix at last year's opening ceremony, festival sound designer, Adolf Toegel, decided to use two iLives at FOH for the 2009 event.

USA - Broadcast live from the Grand Ole Opry on Gospel Music Television, the 40th Annual GMA Dove Awards relied on audio input provided almost entirely by Shure. A total of 350 microphones were allotted to the task, 16 of which operated on Shure UHF-R wireless channels. Among these 16 channels, 12 worked with either KSM9 or Beta 58A handheld transmitters used for performances by Shure endorsers, including Chris Tomlin, Third Day, Natalie Grant, and MercyMe.

UK - The Association of British Theatre Technician's ABTT Theatre Show was another success despite fears that London's most severe tube strike for 12 years would play havoc with the visitor attendance.

The Show's organisers report that whilst pre-registrations were a healthy 10% up on last year, the total visitor count to the show was only slightly affected by the strike on London's underground system, down by 15% on 2008's figures.

Roger Fox, show director, commented: "We were delighted by the attendance at this year's show and very happy to have maintained our position as a leading event in the industry's calendar despite the tube strike. USA - Shure Incorporated reports that a five-member team from the New England School of Communications is this year's Grand Prize Winner of the fifth annual Fantastic Scholastic Recording Competition. The five-student team of Levi Gray, Jacob Lansky, Tyrus Michaud, Cameron Smith, and Joshua Strange, with faculty advisor Dave MacLaughlin, won this year's Shure contest with an original composition by Samuel Chase and Yuri Nikolis Trusty entitled Never Ending Story.

Singapore - Recently, Singapore welcomed the first edition of the new beer festival, Beerfest Asia 2009, celebrated beneath a 30 x 70mtent. Over 1.500 people attended, and over 25 brands of beer got the party flowing. Singapore Flyer offered over 100 varieties for tasting in their stand as well as in the pit stop area of Singapore's Formula 1.

UK - The festival season kicked off for rock fans and Peavey at Download Festival 2009 at Donington where acts included headliners Slipknot and a reformed Faith No More.

Peavey reports that its gear was heard from every corner of the festival, as 22 of the acts - including the headliners - are endorsees.

Those plying their trade with Peavey equipment included crossover icons Pendulum, returning for their second year. Download veterans Trivium, and old-school Canadian metallers Anvil made their first appearance at the event since 1982. UK - A day after its UK launch, the new Digidesign Venue SC48 was in use on a Sam Kruger production at BBC Maida Vale Studio 3, with PA provided by Capital Sound. The show was arranged by the BBC for Paloma Faith to perform her new single Stone Cold Sober, a BBC record of the week, and other tracks from her forthcoming debut album Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful.
