Manchester-based Digital Projection International (DPI) has announced the addition of three new projectors to its successful product line-up. The Blacklite range has been specifically designed for applications where cinema quality high contrast images are required.

The range offers light output levels from 3000-7000 ANSI lumens to suit every application: all the projectors utilize the unique dark metal Thunder DMDs which are the core enabling device of this 3-Chip DLP system, offering SXGA (1280 x 1024) resolution with optional SD-SDi or HD-SDi. This dark metal chip technology has only previously been available in D-Cinema projection units, and coupled with special lenses and Digital Projection’s optical know-how, offers a contrast level of 1200:1.

Big screen entertainment specialist Blink TV has kicked off a busy summer schedule by announcing agreements with the UK’s two biggest radio groups - Capital and GWR - to work with more than a dozen local radio stations nationwide at their outdoor ‘Party In The Park’ style events.

These shows have become a regular and important fixture on the summer circuit and regularly attract the UK’s hottest pop acts including Blue, Mis-teeq, The Sugarbabes, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Hear’Say, Liberty X, 3SL, H & Claire and the like - all packed into a programme that usually runs for about four hours throughout the afternoon.

The chameleon-like role which multi-pupose, public-funded theatres need to play in the community can provide a real conundrum for chief technicians when trying to stretch, and achieve maximum utilisation of National Lottery grants. With an 810-seat conference theatre, boardroom, restaurant, 76-capacity cinema and foyer to provide coverage for, Eden Court in Inverness is just such an establishment. A client of LMC Audio’s Birmingham branch, when the company was on a visit recently the issue of video was raised.

Previously, a videowall had been proposed as a solution to the diverse needs of the venue. Screen specialist GL UK has supplied top dance artists Basement Jaxx with 21 modules of 25mm pixel pitch Unitek LED screen for their summer tour and festival appearances. The screens are flown upstage in three columns, and used like a lighting effect to create an intense montage of colour and movement with a mix of images and visuals. The screens are full daylight panels, so look equally good if the band are playing in the afternoon, creating a unique visual identity for Jaxx’s lively set.

The screen footage - running for 90% of the show - was produced by video artist Richard Shipman. E//T//C UK, the large format projection specialist, fresh from its success in illuminating Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Jubilee, has produced a series of breathtaking 40-minute projection shows for Guernsey’s three-month long Victor Hugo Festival. The free son et lumière show - specially produced by E//T//C UK - that recalled the dramatic life and times of Hugo, who spent 15 years in exile on Guernsey during the 1850s and 60s. The free, three-day son et lumière was timed to coincide with Bastille Day, and also illustrated the rich cultural heritage of the island. It was held on the waterfront at Guernsey’s capital, St. Peter Port, and was a massive success, attracting over 5,000 people. Audace Ltd, manufacturer of the Intelliplate range of remote control panels for installations, has announced that the launch of the newest member of the range will take place at the PLASA show in September.

The ‘SuperHub’ moves the Intelliplate concept away from exclusively controlling audio towards more general AV control. It does this by providing more control ports, a proprietary scripting language - ‘IntelliScript’, more processing power and Ethernet capability. Benefits to installers will include the facility to access the control system remotely using a standard web browser, facilities for controlling multiple devices with one processor, an integral calendar for scheduled events and an automated error logging facility for diagnostic purposes.

Corporate event AV specialist Creative Technology assisted staging company Imagination to create a vivid platform for T. Mobile to make a key presentation to its staff at the Blackpool Hilton recently. The centrepiece of a full technical package was a pair of twin rear-projection screens, mounted stage right behind the lectern, while to the left were blow-up images taken from T Mobile’s advertising campaign.

The screen displays took separate Powerpoint, video graphics and camera-derived feeds projected from Christie S6 and X6 6000 ANSI lumens Roadster projectors. Incorporated in the complement of equipment were graphics machines running Windows XP with new 3D animations effects. CT also fielded a conventional three-camera PPU.

Leading technical design consultancy LDPS has opened an office in New Zealand, to service clients in Australasia, the Pacific Rim and the Far East. The move follows four years of LDPS operation in Ireland and the UK, which will continue to be directed from the Cork office. LDPS’s Grant Collie told us: "I’ve had incredibly positive feedback on the New Zealand office and on the business we will be doing in these territories. I’m already working on several projects."

XL Video’s recently-acquired Unitek MS17 LED video screen provided the backdrop for 15 days of exciting competition and entertainment at the NikePark Scorpion KO event, held at The Dome in Greenwich, London. Live video specialists XL Video supplied and operated the Unitek screen, which was used as a central feature of the main stage.

Themed on Nike Football’s hugely successful TV ad campaign, the Dome was transformed into a post industrial-styled football arena in which 16 different ‘Scorpion Tribes’ played off against each other for a place in the Scorpion Final held on the 15th June 2002. RMS will introduce no less then five new versions of its well-known Rental Management Systems software. All new versions share the RMS planning engine and the easy-to-use interface, which assures fully reliable data at extremely high speeds.

The first version is RMS Touring, a software package designed especially for handling rentals of touring-companies. This version is excellent for companies that have large quantities of equipment out for longer periods. Together with the crew- and transport-planner, it gives full control over all touring-rentals.

Contracted by RSA Films to assist in the shooting of the trailer for the new James Bond film, Creative Technology helped construct an ingenious rig at Pinewood Studios, based on the new Barco G8 projector.

The Wandsworth-based technology company had good reason to call upon the G8 DLP projector in view of its high output (8000 ANSI lumens) matched with compact chassis and low mass. This, according to CT’s project manager, Richard Landen, enabled them to mount it via a CT hanging bracket to standard scaff poles and clamps, onto a Vinten heavy duty head, which in turn was attached to a standard Giraffe camera-mount crane. "The projector worked effortlessly 12 hours a day, over a four-day period - taking up positions inside the famous Bond cars," said Richard. XL Video supplied live video production equipment for the recent Oasis shows at Finsbury Park, to a specification from Cheese Film & Video. The Oasis video show was a collage of two elements - onstage screens/pre-recorded footage, and side screens/live camera shoot. There was an occasional crossover of the live footage onto the onstage screens.

The onstage graphics material was conceptualised by Oasis’ lighting designer Mikey Howard, and designed and created by Richard Turner and Claire Oxley, working closely with Howard. As the band’s artistic director and lighting designer, Howard wanted to create an integrated visual scheme that mixed both lighting and video medias. The second session, Discounting Rental Rates: Is it Economic Madness? will look at discounting in rental markets, and how companies may be devaluing the services they provide in their attempts to undercut competitors. Once again, the panel will be drawn from those who deal with these issues on a daily basis.
