In the 1980s, Amptown's initiators Peter Matthes and Ulrich Müller - thanks to their passion for music and in particular for technology - became known as sound system experts in the booming musical business. For the first time in theatre history people built venues tailored to specific shows featuring permanently installed sound systems
In 1990, the year of German reunification, the Hamburg-based company began to focus on merging expertise in the professional music business with its knowledge of the right products and of the installation and servicing of complex sound systems. The result of this was that the young system provider was given the name Amptown Sound & Communication or ASC for short. Their emphasis at the time was very much on good sound.
Much has changed since 1990. ASC's stage technology expertise has become more and more focused on consulting, project management, procurement, installation, commissioning, and service. New technologies have brought with them new solutions for groundbreaking entertainment projects.
In 1995 ASC equipped AIDAcara, the first cruise liner belonging to AIDA Cruises. The reputation they earned for themselves from this first ship commission and their newly acquired network with architects, planners, and technical department directors enabled ASC to take on other challenging tasks involving complex media equipment, such as Congress Centrum Hamburg and the Bertelsmann and Siemens pavilions at Expo 2000 in Hanover. There were also pioneering system solutions involving conference and seminar centres for corporate projects.
Another important milestone in the history of ASC was the founding of ASC Berlin in 2001. In addition to its established business with entertainment equipment, the Berlin team made a name for itself by providing successful system solutions in the public sector - public projects generated by a mood of new beginnings in the young capital and the arrival of government ministries from Bonn. During this time, ASC's core competence in sound systems was strategically augmented to include the technical disciplines of video, projection, communication, and control technology.
Soon ASC was to obtain the ultimate accolade in the events industry when it given the job of equipping the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 and Turin 2006. The brief was to install a sound concept for 55 competition venues, for the Olympic Village, and for live television and radio broadcasting. ASC won out over worldwide competition and suddenly found itself at the center of public interest.
In 2008 the company decided to reflect its holistic system philosophy in its name: Amptown System Company. Its logo was given a stable image with the characteristic ASC letters based on the geometric forms of the triangle, circle, and square.
The system specialist began to look ahead and build up its business development with the appointment of Leif Witte in 2010. By then they had successfully established themselves in the business areas of entertainment, maritime projects, digital cinema, info- and edutainment, corporate & public projects, hotels, events & catering, and service.
In 2012 the sister company Amptown Lichttechnik was merged with ASC. Around the same time they publicized their skill at creating and building specialized electromagnetic solutions by founding their own Amptown Manufaktur.
The years 2014 and 2015 saw a new upturn in ASC's project business and were a quantum leap for the system integration of entertainment technology in maritime projects. This culminated in orders for three monumental cruise liners, the Quantum Class of Royal Caribbean Internation
