The ASD's debut Winter School takes place at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
UK - The Association of Sound Designers (ASD) has announced the debut of a new training scheme which consists of an intense, week-long seminar series on theatre sound, from 27-31 January 2014, at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Each day of the ASD Winter School features a theme - such as Content Creation, Radio Mics, Electro-Acoustics and Emergent Technologies - with between three and five seminars on that theme each day. The seminars cover a huge range of topics and are led by industry experts. The seminars are free to attend for any student in full-time education, and of course, for all ASD members.

ASD Chair, Gareth Fry said: "The aim of the Winter School is to give attendees the opportunity to learn more in one week than you could in the rest of the year! The seminars assume no previous knowledge on any subject but take you to a deep understanding of each topic."

Monday 27 January focuses on the creation and playback of sound, featuring seminars from John Leonard and Foley artist Jack Stew (Trance, Slumdog Millionaire, Dredd).

Tuesday 28 January focuses on Radio Mics, with Shure's Tuomo Tolonen explaining the fundamentals of the technology; and a practical demonstration on how to hide wireless mics on a performer.

Wednesday 29 January focuses on Electro-Acoustics, starting with a beginner's guide to room acoustics and speaker dispersion, followed by d&b audiotechnik highlighting the benefits of Line Arrays, and Meyer Sound looking at ways to optimise a sound system using delay and EQ.

Thursday 30 January focuses on The Future Now - emergent and futuristic technologies that are available to use now, including loudspeaker systems that can track an actor's position on stage and computer programs that can let you listen to what a sound system will sound like in a theatre before it's built. A comprehensive guide to understanding computer and audio networking is included for a world where we are increasingly connecting sound equipment together with Ethernet cables.

Friday 31 January contains a couple of yet to be announced seminars; with the week rounding off with a discussion of the skills graduates need in order to get work in the industry.

In a bid to increase attendance from people living outside London, the ASD has introduced a travel assistance scheme, providing one-third to one-half of the price of a standard saver return rail fare for ASD members living more than 50 miles away from a training seminar.
