Backstage Academy helped organise the charity event in conjunction with The Prince of Wales Hospice
UK - Christmas shoppers visiting the Xscape complex in Castleford, West Yorkshire, last weekend were in for a shock as a flash mob of 120 students from six local colleges, together with members of West Yorkshire Police, burst into dance amongst the crowd.

Backstage Academy helped organise the charity event in conjunction with The Prince of Wales Hospice, providing the sound system for the two performances throughout the day.

Sponsored by Scottish and Southern Electricity, the flash mob brought together A-Level Dance and Performing Arts students from NEW College, St Wilfrids Sixth Form, Airedale Academy, Doncaster College, University Centre Doncaster and Wakefield College. The event raised £350 for the Hospice, which provides care for people with a life-limiting illness.

Said Backstage Academy COO Robin Watkinson: "It's been a fantastic experience working with the local students in the build up to the performance. They all descended upon our dance rehearsal studio to practice their moves and really pulled it off on the day."

Joanne Weathers choreographed the routine and taught it to all the students in her own time. "It was such a fun and exciting event to be involved in and all the students have been really enthusiastic and lovely to work with. They were keen to support the Hospice and work with key organisations within the community," she said.

The Prince of Wales Hospice Community Fundraiser Becky Thorpe commented: "It's very important for us to engage with local young people to create awareness about what we do and encourage community spirit, particularly at Christmas time, when smaller charities aren't usually at the forefront of people's minds.

"We need more young volunteers to come forward and help volunteer at events, in order to secure the charity's future to help support those adults with terminal illnesses. We're pleased to be working with such an enterprising initiative as Backstage Academy, which offers career direction and skills training for young people interested in the entertainment industry."
