Bandit UK's executive officer, Lester Cobrin says: "DJ Shadow was an interesting show that involved great teamwork between lighting and video crews, which is becoming increasingly common. It was one of the very diverse selection of tours that closed a tremendous 2006 for us."
Hyne has been lighting DJ Shadow since June of 2006 when The Outsider was released, with the touring schedule ramped up for the second half of the year. The show is heavily visual-based. Hyne's lighting was thus designed to let the visuals have their place, while simultaneously complimenting and illuminating both artist and the stage set.
"The visuals are unique and extremely well done," explains Hyne, "So they also heavily influence my approach to lighting."
One of his primary objectives was to highlight the 24ft wide screen structure at the back of him, and make it look even wider and more prominent. Another was to mimic the flow and movement of the video, pulling the stage into an integrated 'in motion' canvass of energy in tune with his music.
For this, Bandit supplied Hyne with Martin MAC 700 Profiles and MAC 250 Washes, a selection of ACL 4-lites, and an Avolites Pearl 2004 console.
Hyne programmed plenty of asymmetric movement chases and random positions into the desk, and operated 'live' so the show was as improvised as much as possible. He also used gobo movements and colour bumps to assist and complement the video.
Bandit supplied Rob Starksfield to assist on this production, who worked closely with Hyne on the rig each day. The pair of them collaborated with Richard Stembridge, who set up all the visuals.
"We had great support from Lester and Bandit as always," says Hyne, "And the gear came out in tip-top condition as you would expect."
