UK - BECTU has strengthened the group public liability insurance cover which freelance members can choose to access. From 1 May the policy will provide cover for accidental damage to third party property which is in the member's custody and control.

Discussions in recent weeks have highlighted increasing incidence of employers requiring freelance staff to hold this additional element of cover.

The limit on the cover for custody and control claims will be £25,000 for any one claim and £100,000 for all claims in any one period (ie one year) of insurance. The extension to the policy will be provided without additional cost to members.

Overall, the union's policy provides public liability insurance cover for accidental damage to third party property up to £5million per claim.

New freelance members can opt to be covered by the policy without additional charge up to the end of April following their entry into membership. Existing members pay a single payment of £23, on top of membership subscriptions, to renew their annual PLI cover; this top-up fee has been held at £23 for the last three years.
