As a counter to this, another award-winning lighting designer, Rick Fisher, wonders whether technology is beginning to upstage the lighting designer's art. With his paper Nothing to Light? It must be projection!, Rick guarantees a stimulating discussion as he questions why, if lighting is the glue that holds a show together, are lighting designers becoming so unstuck about projection?
A perfect complement to these papers is one from yet another award-winning LD (Showlight is full of them!). Durham Marenghi talks about A Life In The Dark, from The Wall in Berlin to lighting London's Buckingham Palace, from stage productions of Romeo and Juliet to Bremen's Space Park - Europe's largest indoor theme park. Durham's lighting career has been extremely diverse, using a wide array of equipment and technology, and it makes him perfectly placed to address how all aspects of production lighting have developed, where they might go next and how they might be applied to a wide range of productions.
These papers are part of a much wider programme of seminars, product displays, events and backstage tours, which give lighting professionals and students alike the rare opportunity to take a step back and look at their work afresh. With an informal reception starting the proceedings on the evening of Saturday 21 May, there's not much time left, so book now to avoid disappointment!
Taking place from 22-24 May 2005 at the Prinzregententheater, Munich, Showlight is a truly international event, attracting speakers and delegates from around the world. Key sponsors include the Prinzregententheater in association with the Bayerische Theaterakademie, ETC and ARRI.
