The new courses, Live Event Technology and Lighting Technology look set to train some of the UK's top dramatic lighting professionals of the future. During the launch, which took place on Tuesday 6 September, one of the campus' largest buildings was illuminated by state-of-the-art lighting technology provided by Stage Electrics.
For the two weeks of the launch Stage Electrics is highlighting the campus building with the use of 4 Studio Due Citycolors 2.5k and two Martin MAC 2000 Performances assisted by an array of generic lanterns from ETC, Strand and Selecon. The use of three custom glass gobos together with the static lighting produces an array of different effects on the building which can be seen by passing traffic on the A470 in the valley below.
Stage Electrics also provided equipment for the transformation of the Civil Engineering loading bay into a practical demonstration space allowing students to learn and improve their skills in rigging, focusing and lighting design. Truss for this space was sourced from Prolyte, the space being one of the first in Wales to utilize the multipurpose H30V square box truss. Four Prolyft motors also from Prolyte have been installed, enabling students quick and easy access to the rig.
The new courses have been developed in consultation with industry practitioners in order to prepare students for work in the sector. The Live Event course will provide students with a high level of technical skills and knowledge combined with creative abilities in live event technology, including sound, lighting design and engineering, as well as event production for theatre, conferences, performances and festivals.
The courses specifically prepare students for employment in event management and production companies; broadcast, theatre, entertainment, live performance and the media, as well as self-employment.
Course leader Akram Hammoudeh said, "This course is designed to prepare students for careers as lighting technicians and we have worked closely with industry to ensure that our graduates are equipped with all of the necessary skills. Final year students will have the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team working together in a simulated industry environment."
Business development manager Simon Kenning from Stage Electrics said: "During the process of designing the installation, the staff of the university asked if it was possible to light the building architecturally for the launch of the two courses. We were only too happy to help and hope to work closely with the University in the future. We wish all the new students best of success with their studies."
