UK - Wednesday 18 September saw the third edition of the ever popular PLASA Golf Day where teams from the technical and live event industry met to battle it out on the course in order to raise money for theatre and lighting based charity, Light Relief. Held once again at the beautiful Drift Golf Club in Surrey, the competition offers players an opportunity to meet fellow industry professionals, show off their skills and perhaps most importantly, settle old scores on the green.

Following on from the hugely successful competition in March earlier this year, the event saw returning teams from Delta Sound, Sound By Design, Creative Technology, Ambassador Theatre Group, Crewsaders, White Light, Media Lease, Autograph, PLASA, and Martin Audio, alongside the welcome addition of newcomers Elation Lighting and ALD.

UK - Robe's Robin MMX WashBeam moving lights were used for the first time at a London Fashion Week show by fashion lighting designer Nick Gray of creative practice Renegade.

Gray lit two high profile off-site shows - Jasper Conran at the Saatchi Gallery and Roksanda at The Place, London Bridge - for London Fashion Week SS14 last week using MMX WashBeams.

It was the first time Gray has used Robe moving lights in his fashion work - he is also the LD for rockers Kasabian, comedian Eddie Izzard and is an internationally exhibited video and light artist.

Gray has been wanting to incorporate moving lights on his fashion projects for some time, but feels that the appropriate fixtures have only recently become available.

He comments, "I have been keeping my eye on Robe for a while as they are now bringing some really interesting products to the market. For both these shows, t

UK - When the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series visited Wales for the UK leg of their global cliff diving championship, XL Events was on hand to ensure all the action was captured for the crowds of excited spectators.

With competitors diving from a height of 27m from the top of the Pembrokeshire cliffs, XL Events needed to ensure that spectators in both of the cliff viewing areas had an excellent view of the 14 divers from nine different countries.

To achieve this, XL Events installed two Lighthouse R7 LED screens, one at the top and one at the bottom of the cliffs, and each measuring 5 x 3m.

XL selected the R7 screen for this outdoor project as it is weatherproof, robust and its high brightness and shaders make it the perfect choice for use in sunlight. The screens were installed by Sandro Bruni and Jan van Geet, who also operated cameras during the two-day event.

UK - Martin Audio's MLA system changed the sonic landscape around the globe this summer - providing an acoustic experience and uniting the audience at premier festivals, concerts and other outdoor events as never before.

For promoters and production teams MLA enabled them to meet traditional challenges head on for the first time. The multi award-winning system's ability to provide uniform coverage right across the soundfield was matched by its scientifically proven reduction of offsite spillage and noise pollution to well within local authority thresholds.

With MLA's ability to sonically 'map' a site - optimising audience areas and 'hard avoiding' objects that might create reverberation or slapback - it has rapidly become a go-to system for promoters and local authorities alike.

There was no finer example of the award-winning system's powers than at AEG Live's Barclaycard Br

Brazil - For the 12th time in Rio de Janeiro, a tradition dating back nearly 30 years came to life once again when Brazil's most important music festival Rock in Rio took place in September. While the concept has spread to Spain and Portugal, Rio maintains a melting pot of different musical styles and genres.

Lighting designer Valmor Neves from Zuluz Iluminicao utilised the effects of the SGM P-5 LED wash light to create beautiful designs for the largest telecommunications company in Brazil, Oi Telefonia, postal service company Correios and global leader in the beverage industry, Coca-Cola.

Stage lighting company, Companhia da Luz, supplied a total of 54 P-5s for Neves' design, the main focus of which was to unite colours and gradient effects on the façades to produce a constantly changing and transforming appearance to stimulate the broad spectrum of visitors.

Australia - Lighting designer Peter Mumford is using Clay Paky's powerful Sharpy luminaires to deliver ingenious lighting effects on Global Creatures' ambitious multi-million dollar production of King Kong in Melbourne.

With a scenic backdrop that primarily comprises video and lighting effects, Mumford has applied the bright, pure beams of 46 Sharpys in a unique way to create an almost architectural grid effects across the stage. He has also used the Sharpys to convey stunningly realistic gunfire effects as King Kong is shot down from the Empire State Building.

At the opening of the show the Sharpys are used to deliver a dynamic web of light, projected into a smoke curtain, which descends from the proscenium as King Kong makes his first entrance.

"A lot of people are using Sharpys in a very similar way but for King Kong Peter Mumford has used them in a completely

UK - Chromlech Elidy LED panels have toured the world with Mumford & Sons in the largest installation of these LED matrix fixtures to date. Lighting designer, Ed Warren, employed 12 Elidy-Big, 12 Elidy-S and 64 Elidy-Wall panels in spectacular style to create unique lighting effects in his latest tour with the blockbuster band.

Warren has worked with Mumford & Sons for five years, 'ever since they needed a lighting designer', favouring tungsten-based lighting in his designs which, he feels, best suits the band.

"I have used Chromlech's Jarag tungsten fixtures since Mumford & Sons' first production tour in 2010, then Chromlech launched Elidy at PLASA 2012," says Warren. "A couple of lighting friends recommended me this new product, and when I saw it for myself I thought Christmas had come! It was almost as if Chromlech had invented the Elidy especially for me.

UK - When lighting designer Neil Austin was looking to light Liolà at the Lyttelton Theatre, he wanted to try something new - something which would provide the same smooth dimming he is used to with traditional tungsten, but providing vibrant, full colour.

In a European exclusive, Liolà became the first show outside of the US to be lit with ETC's new Source Four LED CYC fixtures, powered by the ETC Source Four LED Lustr+ engine.

"The ETC Source Four LED CYC is a game-changer," says Austin. "At last there's a high quality, low-energy alternative to the most electricity and gel-hungry section of theatre lighting. There were looks I was able to achieve on the cyclorama for Liolà that would not have been possible with any other method of lighting - not even my beloved tungsten."

Scandal - Andrew Lloyd Webber has launched his new West End musical, saying it would show how the man involved in the 1960s Profumo Affair was made a "scapegoat" by the establishment. The musical, Stephen Ward, opens at London's Aldwych Theatre in December. Lord Lloyd-Webber said Ward's life was a "wonderful subject" for a composer. Ward, an osteopath and socialite, was instrumental in the Profumo sex scandal, which threatened to topple the Conservative government in 1963.

More Thrills - Thriller Live has extended its run at the Lyric Theatre in London by an extra year. The show, which is a concert of music by Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, is now booking until 28 September, 2014. It was first staged at the venue in January 2009 following three UK tours. The show has extended its run at the theatre every year since then, with the last

Australia - With a major upgrade now complete, the community of users at Wyndham Cultural Centre are already feeling the benefits of a new Tannoy sound system for the Centre's auditorium performance space, based around the popular VX Series.

The City of Wyndham is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, in the outer south-western suburbs of Melbourne. With a population of over 160,000, this is a thriving community that has Wyndham Cultural Centre as its heart.

This important building - which houses the Tattersall's Theatre, two exhibition galleries, the CBD library, Visitor Information Centre and café - was opened to the public in 2001, but a certain approach to construction meant there were some problems from the outset, as Gavin Hume, director of MultiTek Solutions, explained.

"The venue had some troubling times during the original construction. The the

China - Since its original incarnation in the Netherlands in 2010, The Voice television singing contest has become a global phenomenon with 39 different countries currently broadcasting their own versions of the franchise. Now in its second season, The Voice of China features two DiGiCo mixing consoles.

With an identical format to the other incarnations of The Voice, the show is broadcast on Zhejiang Television between July and September. Its head of sound is Jin Shaogang, one of China's leading live audio engineers and revered in the country for his role at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Naturally, the sound production's most important task is to make the contestants sound as good as possible, so Jin Shaogang specified an audio system which includes a DiGiCo SD7 at Front of House and an SD10 on monitors. Complemented by t

UK - Broadcast audio specialists Red TX played a pivotal role in the production of Morrissey 25: Live From Hollywood High, recorded at Hollywood High, a legacy concert film that celebrates 25 years of this enigmatic performer's solo career.

Filmed live at the Hollywood High School in Los Angeles in March 2013, this intimate gig provided the material for the first authorised Morrissey film to be released in nine years. Red TX worked closely with Nineteen Fifteen and Eagle Rock Productions, the producers for Eagle Rock Entertainment, to ensure a great soundtrack. As well as liaising closely with the US recording crew, the company was also responsible for mixing the concert - a task that took place back in the UK on board Red TX's main Outside Broadcast vehicle, Red One, with director Tim Summerhayes at the controls.

Nineteen Fifteen producer Vicki Betihavas says: "I

"Because the music styles are so varied at Sziget, this system is perfect. And because LEO is so linear with a flat frequency resp

UK - MilTec (UK) Ltd recently supplied 387 of their Mini-Map miniature LED screens for installation in one of Leeds' premier nightclubs, Club Mission.

The club was planning the biggest refit in its history and needed a product with real impact to help transform the venue. The venue discussed the refit with Terry Lewsey from Light Design Ltd, a long term supplier to the club. Terry suggested a system of Mini-Maps to form a video ceiling and so a demo at MilTec's HQ was arranged. MilTec's demo system of 50 units was used for the demo.

The installation took place during the second week of September. Cabling was simple as the units are supplied with pre-made IDC leads for daisy chaining power and DMX. The compact design meant that the system could be configured around the existing roof structure and air conditioning ducts, something that could not have been done with larger conven

France - MF Audio, founded in 1998 and based in the North of Paris, is a full service live event production company providing sound, lighting, and staging solutions.

The principle, Sebastian (Seb) Fleury has made a point to surround himself with accomplished production professionals, which has led to the success of the live event production company.

One of the other secrets to its success has been to ensure that all products in their inventory meet their four qualifications - quality, reliability, usability and versatility.

Recently, MF Audio invested in a new Adamson System Energia E15 PA, which meets their four qualifications in spades. As a long-time supporter of Adamson - with previous investments in Spek-Trix, Y10, Y18 and Metrix - it was a likely pairing that has suited everyone extremely well.

Vietnam - Clubs in Vietnam have reportedly become so taken with Martin Audio sound systems that some believe it has become an automatic passport for filling their venues. One such nightspot, the 900-capacity Barocco Club in Ho Chi Minh City, is living proof of that.

After suffering a serious fire back in May this year, the club decided to make a clean start by commissioning Duc Proaudio Co. Ltd - the official distributor of Martin Audio in Vietnam - to redesign the entire sound system and rev up its essentially electronic music mix.

Duc Proaudio Co. Ltd is widely experienced in club sound systems and over the years has achieved tremendous success - particularly with Martin Audio systems. The Barocco Club refit had to be carried out on a tight time scale as it was scheduled to reopen just 90 days after the fire. And of these, only 65 days were available for the design and insta
