The books can be found on stand A02 in the Palm Court at the ABTT Theatre Show 2024

UK - Richard Pilbrow’s final book A Sense of Theatre, about the creation and history of Britain’s National Theatre, will be greeting visitors to this year’s ABTT Theatre Show from a prime spot just inside the main entrance – giving visitors the opportunity to pick up a copy of this remarkable book.

A Sense of Theatre, shortlisted for this year’s Society for Theatre Research Theatre Book Prize, will be sharing stand A02 with three other remarkable books about theatres and theatre history: Richard’s earlier work, the autobiographical A Theatre Project, Iain Mackintosh’s Theatre Spaces 1920-2020 – Finding the Fun in Functionalism, which charts the creation of new theatres spanning a century, and David Staples’ Modern Theatres 1950-2020, which explores all aspects of modern performance venues using the examples of a series of remarkable and acclaimed buildings.

To celebrate the ABTT’s involvement and support with the production of these books, all will be available to buy at special show prices, with the show also representing the only opportunity currently available to purchase A Theatre Project in the UK.

Some of those behind the books, including Iain Mackintosh and Rob Halliday, who saw A Sense of Theatre through to completion after Richard’s passing last December, will be on-stand during the show to talk about the books and the stories they contain. Rob will also be leading a session on A Sense of Theatre on the second day of the show, Thursday 6th June, at 4pm in the Londesborough Room, as well as previewing another new book, Theatre Lighting Design: Conversations on the Art, Craft and Life, co-written with fellow lighting designer Emma Chapman, which becomes available in late July.

The books can be found on stand A02 in the Palm Court at the ABTT Theatre Show 2024, taking place at Alexandra Palace in London this Wednesday and Thursday, June 5th and 6th.
