UK - We were saddened to hear of the recent death of John Roden. One of the world's leading live sound monitoring engineers and a much-loved and respected figure in the touring industry, John passed away on 1 July, just a few weeks after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was 53.

UK - The 2007 AGM of the Professional Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA) saw members vote in a major membership restructuring that will both simplify membership options and increase the choice to members of which PLASA services they wish to use.

The restructure, one of the key items on a packed agenda, was voted in on a show of hands by an overwhelming proportion of the record number of members who attended the AGM at the Hurlingham Club in London on 6 June.

The restructure, which is designed to ensure that PLASA represents the highest possible professional standards, will also provide a framework that better reflects the industry. As such, the existing nine categories of membership have been simplified to just four - Business, Educational, Individual and Affiliate. PLASA is now working on the fine detail behind the restructure and the new scheme will be officially launche

USA - Vari-Lite has announced the hiring of Alan Kibbe as regional sales manager for the Northeast region of the United States. Kibbe will be based out of Norwalk, CT, and will oversee the Vari-Lite Authorised Rental and Sales network in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC, West Virginia, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Kentucky, and Ohio.

UK - A technical problem put a damper on Lee Mead's dream debut in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the London Palladium last night, reports the Press Association.

The show was halted after just six scenes on its opening night for about 10 minutes due to "technical difficulties", the audience was told. Fans were left waiting while the problem was sorted - thought to be an issue with the rotating floor.

It was not the first occasion in recent times that a technical issue has hit a high profile West End production - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang also had difficulties in its early shows. And a West End preview performance of the Lord of The Rings musical had to be cancelled earlier this year when actor Adam Salter broke his leg after getting it trapped in set machinery.

USA - The Genlyte Group has announced record second quarter net sales of $408.9 million, an increase of 11.7% compared to $366.1 million in the second quarter of 2006. The Company also reported record second quarter earnings per share of $1.29, a 4.0% increase over the $1.24 reported for the second quarter of 2006. Second quarter net income increased to $37.4 million compared to $35.9 million reported for the second quarter of 2006.

USA - The NSCA has named Nancy Owen as its new director of industry outreach. "Nancy will bring a strong spirit of community building to the NSCA, and she'll tell the story of our membership," says NSCA executive director Chuck Wilson.

"What makes NSCA great is having great members, and Nancy will reach out to these members and forge relationships. As a journalist, she'll expand NSCA's media relations programme and educate the public about the latest projects and news from our members."

USA - Just three years after building and moving into its 250,000 sq.ft headquarters facility in Middleton, Wisconsin, ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls, Inc.) is expanding again. The international entertainment- and architectural-lighting manufacturer is adding an estimated 78,000sq.ft to the factory portion of the building, on its southern quadrant. An initial estimate of the project budget is $9 million. The groundbreaking is scheduled to take place in mid October.

According to Kobi Danke, building-project manager, the new footage will give ETC more manufacturing and warehousing space: "We continue to introduce new products requiring greater assembly space. As part of this consolidation, the 2008 NSCA Systems Integration Expo will now become part of InfoComm's annual trade show in Las Vegas, 18-20 June 2008. NSCA will also transfer its ownership interest in Integrated Systems Europe to the remaining partners, as per a separate operating agreement.

Denmark - Martin Professional A/S continues its positive growth in 2007, maintaining the improvements that the company experienced in 2006, the company reports. Martin increased revenue by 29.8% from DKK 457.8 million (approx. $83.2 million) in the first half of 2006 to DKK 594.3 million (approx. $108.1 million) in the first six months of 2007, an H1 record for the company. The substantial revenue improvement was prevalent across all of Martin's key markets, with the exception of the USA where revenue was slightly lower than last year.

USA - Theatrical engineer John Charles "Jack" Suesse died on 17 August following a brief illness. He was 64. For more than 30 years, Jack was associated with J. R. Clancy Inc, the oldest theatrical rigging company in the US, serving as president from 1986-2005. He then formed his own consulting firm, J. Suesse & Associates, and also served as a special projects advisor to Stage Technologies in London and Las Vegas. He was a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and was selected as a Fellow of the United States Institute for Technical Theater in 1993.

UK - Due to circumstances beyond their control, Deco Leisure Group has been forced to pull outof the forthcoming PLASA Show at Earls Court.

The company suffered severe damage to its Birmingham manufacturing plant during the recent floods in the UK, and had hoped to have time to recover from the damage. However, the situation was exacerbated by a reoccurrence of the drainage problems over the week-end of 1 September, prompting CEO Sammy DeHavilland to make a formal statement:

"We consider the PLASA Exhibition to be the most important in the calendar; however the recent flooding has forced us to focus on the continuity of supply to our customers, rather then attending the show - it has become obvious we cannot do both.
