First job for the new equipment was at the Royal Variety Performance at the Coliseum Theatre, broadcast on Wednesday 15 December. As part of a huge radio microphone system put together by the BBC, Sennheiser and Hand Held Audio, the kit was used by artists including Elton John, Lisa Minelli, Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton-John and Lemar in the presence of the Prince of Wales.
Radio mic and talkback operations co-ordinator for BBC Resources, Richard Kemp, commented: " All broadcast events need audio quality and absolute reliability. As always with Sennheiser 1046 you switch it on knowing it will deliver."
Hand Held director Nick Bruce-Smith said, "I'd been thinking about getting into the 1046 system for some time and now I'm really pleased that we have. Quite apart from anything else it's given us some new frequency options and because of that it's gone straight from the Royal Variety show onto Sir Cliff's Celebrity Christmas tennis event at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham."
