In the three years since they set up their hire and installation company Arranpaul Audio Ltd., Arran Culpan and Paul Rogerson have built up an enviable portfolio of shows, corporate events and fixed installs along the Fylde Coast. The first system Arran purchased from Spencer Brooks was a JBL system - 12 years ago. And he recalled this last month when he returned to Marquee Audio - this time for a Nexo Alpha E/PS8 system and Camco Vortex amplification.

The destination for the Alpha E B1-18 bass enclosures and EM mid tops was the multi-room Tower Ballroom at Blackpool Tower for owners Leisure Parks. "The owners needed the extra bandwidth and wanted to put the old 32ft pipe organ through it," explained Arran. "And so we recommended the Alpha E."

The company specified two Alpha B1-18s and three EMs per side, processed through the dedicated NX-241 system controller. 1

Duran Audio UK has appointed DL Electronics of Lisburn as the AXYS Intellivox dealer for Northern Ireland. DL Electronics has recently completed its first installation supplying a pair of AXYS Intellivox 4C arrays to St Eugene’s Cathedral, Londonderry.

When he was approached about providing a new sound system for St Eugene’s, David Dalzell of DL Electronics, thought it would be the ideal opportunity to try out the Intellivox, a product he had been tracking the progress of for some time. A demonstration quickly followed. "It is very rare to please all of the people all of the time in this industry, however, on this occasion the architect, client and consultant all quickly agreed that an Intellivox solution was the way forward." Throughout the project DL worked closely with consultant engineers Dellap & Waller, architect Joe Tracey and acoustic consultant Peter Lloy

Tech-Ed 2002 offers Microsoft developers and IT professionals from across Europe the opportunity to update their knowledge of the latest integrated solutions from the world’s largest software supplier and hone their expertise with the product range.

Drapes and rigging specialists Blackout Ltd have been appointed by UK production house, PCI Live, to supply all the blackout draping and production rigging services for the event which is held at the enormous Fira de Barcelona 2 exhibition centre this month, filling the entire space of both gigantic halls. The first hall, measuring over 500m in length, over 15m high and some 100m wide, is transformed into 11 acoustically friendly rooms, the smallest of which seats 880 delegates, the largest having the capacity for over 2000. The second hall houses the conferences catering and keynote facilities, including a 6000 capacity room with ful

Stenger-Technik, ADB’s distributor and consultant office in Austria, is currently installing a large lighting control system for the new Stadthalle in Graz. Austria’s second largest city and the capital of the Styria region, is currently preparing for its role as cultural capital of Europe in 2003 and the events to be held in the course of the next year require the city to provide adequate performance spaces with up-to-date facilities.

The modern and multi-functional Stadthalle is intended to host a wide range of events: Stenger-Technik worked closely with the client and architect Klaus Kada on the lighting control system for the venue. The installation will include a full range of ADB lighting control desks with ISIS software (Phoenix 10 and Phoenix 5 desks) running on Ethernet software. The Ethernet signal is distributed via 7 Netswitches to a total of 9 Netgate (XT) uni

London-based lighting specialists Fentura Production Services have just completed a high profile corporate event at the Royal Academy of Art. Lighting designer Tim Matthews specified ChromaCans which were supplied by Richard Martin Lighting to illuminate the main staircase. These units are based upon short nose Par 36 cans fitted with Pulsar’s ChromaRange of LED fittings. The units worked flawlessly throughout the show providing a dynamic and ever-changing carpet of light on the main entrance staircase.

For control, Matthews utilized the built-in programs of the Chroma Zone Controllers which gave him perfect control without the use of DMX or a control desk! Other fittings included CityColors, 400W HQIs and Source Four profiles and pars, which were rigged by a crew of three, in a hectic half hour, between the museum closing to the public and opening again to the corporate guests.<

Event Lighting and Design has handled the lighting requirements for some of London's most high profile events. The company was responsible for the creative design and lighting of the Centenary Development Launch Party at Tate Britain and the Swiss Cultural Fund’s event at Tate Modern. The company has also provided the lighting design and technical production for several events related to the Matisse Picasso exhibition (which opened at Tate Modern on 11 May and runs through to 18 August), including dinner for 200 guests at the opening evening on 9 May. On that occasion the team, including Blackout and Dobson Sound, rose to the challenge by rigging a 19m x 12m printed screen backdrop hanging from the gantries 14m up in the air - thus creating an impressive focal point for each evening. Since the opening, Event Lighting and Design has provided the technical production for further even

When a transfer to Manchester United forced former England international Paul Parker to pull out of his plan to open a bar in Brentwood, his partner, Mark Stevens, went ahead regardless and the bar/brasserie operated as Parkers for 10 years until Stevens decided it was time for a complete refurbishment. With the help of interior designer John Breley and a new TOA sound system, the venue was open - complete with big screen - in time for the World Cup.

"We desperately needed a change of image because there were a lot of new venues arriving in the high street," said Stevens. "It was important that we moved with the times and kept ahead of the competition." The new Bar West One boasts a 6ft extension in the room, with bold colours, a curved ceiling, a granite bar, a neat perspex back bar grid lit by AVR Colourmaster colour changers, and a punchy TOA sound system.

As part of the refurbishment of The Florence Hall, The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) appointed Paul Gillieron Acoustics (PGA) to investigate a way of improving the speech intelligibility of the venue. This unique space is a restaurant by day and by night becomes the venue for product launches, corporate presentations and of course RIBA’s own seminars and award ceremonies.

The challenge that faced the consultants was not only the difficult acoustic (RT > 3 sec) but also finding a solution that would have the minimum visual impact. Extensive acoustic treatment was not possible as the finishes in the room are listed. This listed status also meant that installing a distributed system was impossible. So, as a result of this, PGA decided to investigate an AXYS Intellivox solution and a demonstration quickly followed. The performance of the system coupled with its unobtru

A major networked installation has been completed at Sandown Park Racecourse in Esher, Surrey, by Racecourse Technical Services Ltd (RaceTech). The scale of the contract - which has been completed over an 18-month period - can be measured by the fact that it involved five BSS Audio Soundweb 9088LLs to set up the digital network across 36 sound zones, as part of an overall audio contract which will run to around £150,000 when complete.

Running parallel with the upgrade at the Racecourse’s bars, restaurants, function rooms, private boxes, conference and exhibition facilities, was the construction of a new stand. But Race-Tech’s head of sound, Robin Dibble, noted that the entire complex - including all the bars and leisure areas - had been refurbished. "It’s been overhauled from the ground up," he said. The audio system replaces what he describes as a 'home b

CP Sound, the Middlesex-based creative sound and lighting designer and installer, has just completed its latest club installation - at Square 11 in Northampton. This intimate new nightspot is independently owned by Carl and Paul Bennymore. The interior design is clean looking and straightforward and the musical policy is aimed at a broad clientele. CP Sound’s Colin Pattenden again chose the familiar combination of JBL speakers and MAD lighting fixtures. "We have had many successes with this kit, especially in clubs - it’s a formula that works," he says.

The club is split into two floors. Downstairs, Colin placed JBL Control 28 speakers and SB2 subs in the walk-in area, with more of both speakers at the far end of the bar. This section of the club is a heavy-duty wine bar, open every night of the week. It has a small dancefloor, lit with MAD Scans and MAD QStars, a

Marquee Audio recently installed the entire sound system in the new Oyster Quay bar and grill at Poole Quay, Dorset, which opened at the end of May. With sister venue Toko already successfully established in Bournemouth, this is the latest brand from holding company, Richard Carr’s Future 3000, which also owns the dance venue The Opera House, the dance brand Slinky, and restaurant, Bliss, in Bournemouth.

Overlooking Poole Quay, the new bar was developed at a cost of £1.6m and designed by world-renowned architect and designer Stuart Jones of Design Mode. Stuart has blended soft nautical themes with up to date, modern architecture and interior styling, and, with a capacity of nearly 1000, Oyster Quay is now proving to be the new place to be seen in Poole. Divided into five zones, the exquisite venue is centred round a circular bar, which features an 80-gallon aquarium, and is comp

The McKenzie Group, operator of venues including Brixton Academy, Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Bristol Academy and Birmingham Academy, has made three new staff appointments to the management team at Birmingham Academy - Richard Maides, Lucinda Brown and Stuart Wright. Richard Maides has taken over as general manager of the 2,700 capacity Birmingham Academy, bringing 11 years of managerial experience to MKG. Richard’s previous position was at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre and he was also at Liverpool University for several years; running the live concert programme and highly successful club operations.

Working alongside Richard as assistant general manager is Lucinda Brown, who joins from Wild Promotions where she had been a campaign manager for the past 18 months, working with artists such as Sum 41, Electric Soft Parade and Hoobastank. Prior to that time, Lucinda was ve

Russian installation specialist Elarcon has recently completed a major audio system upgrade for the main concert hall of Moscow's prestigious Cosmos Hotel. The 1000-seat hall is employed for a broad range of applications, from upscale rock performances and classical concerts to corporate events and international conferences. The 2002 schedule includes the Russian State Circus, the Moscow City Ballet and the Russian Imperial Ballet.

Elarcon, which is the installation division of prominent Russian distributor, MixArt, was asked to supply a system that reflected the full flexibility of the venue. As a result, a 40-channel Allen & Heath ML5000 live sound VCA console was selected to perform all front-of-house and monitor mixing tasks. In addition to its eight VCA groups, the mixer has a flexible output structure, allowing any combination of up to 16 auxiliary sends and up to eight audio sub

The Waterfront Nightclub in Arbroath has turned to Turbosound to boost its sound quality, installing a sizeable Floodlight Series system to handle the club's mix of dance music and live sound. The installation was handled by Blue Audio, and took place over a two-month period earlier this year.

The PA system is divided into two elements: the live stage set-up comprises a left/right rig of Floodlight Series TFL-760Ht trapezoidal loudspeakers, complemented by TSW-718 folded horn bass enclosures stacked directly below, plus TFM-202 passive two-way floor monitors. Overall system control is provided via the LMS-D6 digital loudspeaker management system. The second system is designed to create a surround-style set up for the DJ, using one Floodlight Series TFL-760Ht positioned on each corner of the dance floor, with a TSW-718 directly below to cover the rear area. Blue Audio also provisioned a

The renowned Albany Theatre in Deptford, south-east London, has recently undergone a complete technical refurbishment.

Opened on its present site in 1982, The Albany established a formidable reputation for itself in the 1980s as a thriving community theatre with the backing of some big names. But as the years passed, lack of funding took its toll and the theatre fell into disrepair, its equipment failed or was removed, and eventually, in 2000, it succumbed to darkness.

Since then, an energetic campaign to bring it back to life has seen the birth of a three-phase refurbishment programme, most of which is now complete. Thus, the Albany opened its doors again in March, boasting a fully refurbished interior, revamped flying grid and brand new sound, lighting, comms and patching systems with names such as Meyer Sound, XTA Electronics, MC2, Yamaha, ETC and Strand in the rig.

Music Marketing Services have completed their sixth - and most ambitious Tiger Tiger for Chorion plc, with the recent extension of the successful roll-out into Croydon. The company has largely standardized on Martin Audio sound reinforcement - and has been using the EM series extensively in Tiger Tiger since converting from another proprietary brand early on in the development.

MMS account manager Paul Woodward explained: "We have been on board with Chorion since the Tiger Tiger brand was inaugurated in London’s Haymarket. Croydon is immaculate and shows just how far the brand has evolved since the London site - every aspect of the installation has changed."

Chorion switched to Martin Audio after opening their other multi-bar unit, On Anon - just 400m away from Tiger Tiger in London’s Piccadilly - two years ago. "They were seeking a higher quality, crisper

The World of ResidenSea, the first resort community at sea continuously circumnavigating the globe, set sail on its maiden voyage from Oslo in March - equipped with a huge inventory of TOA PA/VA components, supplied by Norwegian-based distributors, Scandec Systemer AS. The luxury 43,500-ton craft comprises 88 guest suites available for the high-end vacation market and 110 luxury apartments (costing $2 million each), many of which are available for rental. It even includes a sea-faring golf course.

FMV sub-contracted the electrical installation work to the Norwegian firm Elpro, who in turn contacted Scandec Systemer to help with the onboard PA/VA, video and show lighting systems. Working side-by-side with the Elpro consultant responsible for the job, Jan Arve Monsen, was Scandec project manager Håkon Bjartveit.

For the public address/voice alarm requirements, the designers dipped dee

When testing a newly-installed sound system, most people’s first choice of bands probably wouldn’t be ear-splitting heavy metal act Slayer. But this was the case recently for a new Mach SlingShot system at one of southern California’s premiere live venues, The Grove of Anaheim, a 2,000+ capacity multi-use venue which hosts some 100 acts a year, including some of the industry’s top bands such as INXS, Simple Minds, The Doobie Brothers and more.

Slayer played two sold-out shows on 1-2 May and easy sounding they are not. As Slayer proclaimed that God Hates Us All in support of their latest CD, all ears were tuned to the Mach SlingShot system.

The system is comprised of eight Mach MS1262 SlingShot top-boxes and four MS15X2 SlingShot fly-bass units with additional power coming from 12 Ballister subwoofers. Six Mach M12T full-range speakers are used for front

The old Thalia Theater in Rotterdam used to be a cinema in a former life but was abandoned some time ago. Now, after several months of renovation, Rotterdam has a brand new dance club - The Thalia Lounge. This is not only a pure dance club but it can also be rented for corporate and live events. For this reason, the sound system needs to be very flexible, as it has to deliver a great performance for disco nights as well as for live events and speech reinforcement. Club owner Bart Den Ouden therefore decided to contact the Dutch HK Audio product manager Johan Meerman of Wils Muziekimport in Roosendaal. Den Ouden says: "I met Johan during an HK Audio demo in another disco here in Holland and from what I heard there I was really convinced about the quality of HK Audio, so I asked him to plan the PA system for the Thalia Lounge. The system itself was installed by Toon Dekkers of HK Audi

Polaron Communications have been contracted to provide a public address and voice alarm (PA/VA) system integrated with a fire detection system, CCTV, access control disabled intercom and intruder alarm for Harvey Nichols and the landlord's areas of The Shambles in Manchester. Interfaces have been provided for later connection to retail shop units, for the propagation of fire detection signals.

Included in the specification is TOA’s new VS-900 intercom system. The Harvey Nichols store and 10 other retail units form the backbone of the transformation of the former Shambles West development in the city centre, along with a residential block. The PA and VA systems will provide secure, fail-safe and high intelligibility emergency speech broadcast to the Harvey Nichols areas and are fully compliant with BS5839 and all other relevant standards. The PA system in Harvey Nichols Department

A major new nightclub has opened in Washington DC to reveal a large number of Coemar lighting fixtures incorporated into the design. Installed by Washington Entertainment Technologies, the 7,500-capacity Dream, based in the northeast of the city, boasts five separate dance areas. Owner Marc Barnes originally hired another contractor but the venue was under-specified. He then turned to Washington Entertainment Technologies to instil the requisite amount of power and lighting. According to general manager and partner in Washington Entertainment, Frank Wilt: "There had been a meagre attempt at the lighting and they clearly needed something more significant. We ended up respecifying the entire club."

The solution lay in Coemar’s popular iSpot, supported by Coemar Digiscans. On the main dance floor, the fixtures are mounted on iBeam trussing, with the light sources concealed

Arbiter Pro Audio has supplied Liverpool-based sound installers Over Audio with a JBL VerTec line array system for Luminar Plc's latest Liquid venue - just open in Hanley, Stoke. Complete with ASB6128 subs from the JBL custom shop, this is the first ever JBL VerTec club installation in the UK. The VerTec system, originally designed for live concerts and touring applications, has previously been used at the Ministry of Sound in Bangkok - which also has a Luminar interest. Last year, VerTec was utilized on the Ministry's own UK college and university tour, where it was very well received.

"JBL products are always developing, and this was the perfect opportunity to put the latest technology into practice," states Over Audio's Mike Boylan, who has been dealing with both Arbiter and Luminar Plc for many years, and has used JBL products in six other Liquid venues. All the Liquids

Miami-based MAVCO has been awarded contracts for two key South Florida construction projects.

At Wynmoor Theater, MAVCO is providing engineering, supply and installation of the lighting, sound and cinema systems for the refurbishment of the 900-seat theatre located at Coconut Creek, Florida. Working to a design by TSG Design Solutions, MAVCO’s enormous experience in all three disciplines was a crucial element in gaining the project, offering the main contractor, Dooley & Mack, the advantage of having one supplier handling all the technical systems.

The Wynmoor Theater serves a private gated community just off the Florida Turnpike and, as well as offering both drama and music productions, is also used for lectures and courses, as well as current events. The comprehensive refurbishment, under the project management of MAVCO’s Nick Gibson, is due for completion at the end of
