USA - As the season started, the Atlanta Falcons had asmall problem: how to realistically recreate the noisy game day conditionsof the Georgia Dome at their training headquarters north of the city inFlowery Branch. The answer, a compact Danley Sound Labs speaker systemcomprised of SH-50 full-range and TH-115 subwoofer units, proved not only tobe a powerful solution, but also, a surprisinglymobile one.

Mike Hedden, of Danley Sound Labs, explains that he initially demonstrated theDanley Sound Labs system, which is manufactured in Gainesville, Georgia, after a friend who works at the Falcons' facility told him that the team wasrenting equipment to simulate crowd noise during practice. "The old systemwas cumbersome and time consuming to setup but most importantly wasn'tsupplying enough 'oomph' to simulate the sound of a crowd of 72,000 people,"relates Hedden.

Greece - Lighting Effects Distribution have supplied a major order for LED effects to a television studio in Greece. Because of the fast set changes involved, Skai TV needed a constantly evolving scenic infrastructure in their Athens studio and turned to London-based ITN Consulting (a division of ITN) for assistance.

The company's senior lighting director, Roy Newman, was first alerted to the LED X-Chip and Ayrton Moduled 318 on the stand of Lighting Effects Distribution at a trade show, and knew they would be ideal for his purposes. "The company was clearly a one-stop shop for LED effects," he noted.

"One of the main reasons for preferring LEDs over tungsten was the rapid turnaround between various programmes, and of course the infinite number of colours instantly available." The lack of maintenance and gel changing, he commented, had been another determin

Belgium - Thirty of Marantz's PMD570 and PMD670 units have been used to create an innovative and versatile learning system for students of a large language department in Belgium.

Local AV specialists Swing CVBA has provided 26 PMD570 Installation Recorders and four PM670 Solid State Recorders to Ghent High School, giving staff the means to exchange materials and mark coursework over the internet, and students the ability to take their language studies off-campus to be continued at home.

The School's previous system used cassette recorders and traditional tape for recording and playback of learning materials, but teachers prompted the move to digital media technology. Using Marantz's PMD recorders, each student uses his or her own flash card, which is removable and can therefore be used to play back lessons and exercises at home. Spain - A modern construction of concrete and glass, the Granollers TheatreAuditorium just north of Barcelona, Spain, has that special touch theCatalans can bring to such potentially lifeless materials.

But lifelessness still managed to manifest itself in other, more acutely problematic ways. "The auditorium was very dry," said head of sound for Granollers, David Carrión. "Less than one second of reverberationis not a proper acoustic for the performances we wish to present."

Fortunately Carrión has twenty years experience as a sound engineer and knewexactly what to do; install a surround system to support the acoustic. "Wehave established a system configured to provide three reverbs: 1.2 secs forjazz; 1.6 secs for contemporary classics; and 2.0 secs for classical."

Choosing the correct system was less obvious. "Apart from the reverberatio

Singapore - The Sentosa Golf Club of Singapore is one of the most highly regarded golf resorts of Asia. Its Italian restaurant and lounge Il Lido offers refined dining in a relaxed atmosphere right in the heart of Sentosa's picturesque Tanjong 18-hole golf course with its panoramic views of the South China Sea and stunning sunsets.

To supplement the existing background music system in the Il Lido lounge, the club recently acquired an ELIAS PX system.

Tirso Garcia, marketing & entertainment manager of Il Lido explains their rationale: "Especially on weekends our guests often want something more after dinner than plain background music, and so Il Lido will often spontaneously transform itself into a dance club. To allow for this flexibility, we wanted a sound system with a great deal more 'kick'. Plus, we hold our sound system up to the same high quality standards as we do

UK - Last weekend saw Opera North undertake its first major get-out at the Grand Theatre, Leeds using the revolutionary engineering solutions devised by theatre consultancy Theatreplan under the direction of Stage Engineering consultant Clive Odom and senior stage engineer Richard Brett, in collaboration with Opera North's technical director Ric Green and structural engineer Oliver Plunkett of BDP.

As part of Leeds City Council's Phase 1 £20.7m upgrade of the Grand and the creation of a permanent home for Opera North, the equipment installed has modernised procedures and proved indispensable in getting the company's current season out on the road for its autumn tour.

UK - When in late 2003 STV (part of SMG plc) decided to vacate its cramped city centre location in Cowcaddens in favour of the new Pacific Quay development overlooking the River Clyde, great care had to be given to the design and ergonomics of the new facility.

The task facing the station as it relocated, would be replacing 120,000sq.ft with just 65,000sq.ft of real estate, into which they would force an expanded infrastructure.

Project director, Tom Gallagher and head of broadcast technology, Gary Welsh, weighed up their options - knowing that in applying advanced connectivity via a Cat6 copper fibre cabling infrastructure they had the opportunity to future-proof the facility at the dawn of the new era of high-definition.

The plan for Pacific Quay was to allow offices and newsrooms to intermix with post-production, dubbing/editing suites and rest areas, while included in th

The Netherlands - In the early 1990s, the city of Almelo in The Netherlands anticipated the volume of traffic on its roads would significantly increase. The solution they decided to implement to allay the problem is a demonstration of both forward thinking and innovation.

On 13 of October 2006 a 4 x 2 panel 25mm Lighthouse screen, measuring 4.88 metres wide by 1.82 metres high, was set up on the Henrietta Roland Holstlaan. This LED screen was the latest addition to this system that is designed to manage both existing traffic and futur

Germany - LED specialist Lagotronics has reported the latest example of its services for customized LED projects. As a classical example of custom designing, these two venues were quoted in 2005, taking the time to fine-tune the DecaLED Pixeldot Pro and making this project a huge success for both Lagotronics and its partners in June 2006.

On the Spielbudenplatz, two large stages were constructed during the early months of 2006 and fitted in June with 2560 DecaLED Pixeldot Pro (rated IP55), 80 LagoLED USB-i 505 controllers and 1.5km of cabling (rated IP55). The lighting designer's vision was to create two stages with DMX-controllable LED fixtures. UK - ChristChurch, London, has recently purchased an Innovason Sy48 Evolution digital console package to handle all of their FOH and monitoring needs at their new venue, the 1200-seat Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End.

Technical director Rhys Scott was looking for a console that would be intuitive to use, flexible, fast to work on and with high audio quality. Furthermore, as the console is largely used by volunteers, it needed to be accessible and logically laid out. "I met the Innovason team at the Messe in Frankfurt earlier in the year and was given a demo of the Sy48. It was extremely impressive, and there was no doubt that it met all of our criteria," said Scott. "We were looking to have the new console in place before we moved to our new venue at the Piccadilly Theatre, and fortunately for us, Innovason launched their 'New for Old" initiative just

UK - Leeds' Grand Theatre, the performance base for Opera North, has reopened to great acclaim after a two year transformation programme by BDP.

The Grand Theatre built in 1878 was a major milestone in Victorian theatre building and is listed Grade II. Once described as "probably the finest theatre of its size in Britain," the Grand's 19th century facilities no longer met present day audience and performance expectations. Working conditions backstage and facilities for artists were increasingly difficult and inefficient.

The £16m first phase works on the theatre have involved new seating, improved sight lines, better ventilation and improved facilities for the disabled. Backstage, the fly tower and flying systems have been upgraded, and two new rehearsal rooms constructed on an adjacent site are connected to the Theatre by a wide bridge, which also acts as a sc
