Joburg Theatre were looking for a LED Cyc light solution to light up the cyclorama, the large white backdrop on stage which changes colour during shows. The purchase had to arrive on time for the annual panto.
"We compared the PLCYC-2LEDs with similar fixtures and found them to be more suited to theatre application and surprisingly more affordable," said Enos Ramoroko, technical manager at the Joburg Theatre. "With no need for labour intensive rigging (fewer and lighter units) and almost nonexistent maintenance, we can only hope to buy more of them to put a smile on the crew."
Ramoroko says that Graham McLusky, the lighting designer for Aladdin, is very happy with the intensity that the fixtures give.
"And I couldn't be more pleased with the choice we made," he added. "Set up will be a cruise with less cabling and relatively much lighter lights."
Dave Whitehouse from DWR Distribution supplied the new equipment. "The advantages of the Philips Selecon PLCYC-2LED is that there is no lamp replacement, you don't need dimmers and they're extremely green because of the amount of electricity you use," Whitehouse said.
Whitehouse says the person behind the lighting desk will appreciate the fixtures most. Gone are the days that streaks of white shine through because the filters or gels have burnt! There is also a three year guarantee against premature failing.
