One of Durban's most successful sound rental companies, Kingston Sound has recently undergone a transformation. After a decade servicing live bands and cultural music festivals in KwaZulu Natal (KZN), Brett Kingsland, owner/manager of Kingston Sound, decided to invest in new sound reinforcement gear.
"It was our integral understanding of loudspeaker system and cabinet design that led us to the JBL Vertec system," Kingsland said. " Vertec is a new way of looking at PA systems. Lighter weight arrays, with fewer boxes, can provide more output power with one of the smoothest, flattest frequency response curves in the industry." Being the only supplier of Vertec speakers in KZN, Kingston Sound has a major competitive edge in the regional rental market.
Kingston Sound's latest additions, apart from their Vertec line array elements, have included Crown I-Tech power amplifiers, as well as new AKG performance microphones, all sourced from South African professional audio equipment distributor Wild and Marr.
The system at the Women's Day Event was comprised of 16 Vertec VT4888 line array elements and eight VT4880 line array subwoofers (eight VT4888's and four VT4880's per side). Additionally, 12 VRX932 portable line array elements were used as side-fills. The system was powered by Crown I-Tech amplifiers.
"As the expectation for improved live sound at festivals and cultural events continues to increase, regional rental firms like Kingston Sound have a significant opportunity to differentiate themselves through the correct application of proper sound reinforcement tools," says David Scheirman, vice president, tour sound for JBL Professional. "The Vertec system has been designed to help live audio operators like Kingston Sound be successful in meeting the needs of their clients."
