L-R: PA/monitor mixer Chris Maddalone, production mixer Otto Svobota, and monitor mixer Aaron Lepley with a few of their new L-Acoustics 112XT floor monitors.
USA - The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson recently completed a total renovation of its set at CBS Television City in Los Angeles. The good news for musical guests visiting Studio 58 is that there is now a larger performance area as well as an improved monitor system, which benefits from a dozen new L-Acoustics 112XT and two 115XT stage wedges, all powered by the manufacturer's LA Series amplifiers.

"I'm definitely liking these monitors," says Late Late Show PA/monitor mixer Chris Maddalone, who has also mixed for The Price Is Right and American Idol and recorded and toured with numerous rock acts over the years. "I've gone through just about every box you can think of and these are right up at the top of the list, which makes sense seeing that I've used V-DOSC(r) and dV-DOSC a bunch of times and loved them."

Maddalone notes that the XT Series monitors sound particularly sweet when doubled up in front of a lead singer. "There's a nice coupling boost that takes place, and it's completely free of the phasing issues than can commonly plague a monitor setup. The dispersion of the horn on the high-frequency driver is perfect.

"Plus, they get nice and loud," he adds. "Even though this is a television studio, we still have bands that really crank the volume when they play in here and not one of them has complained about not being able to hear themselves, which was a problem with our old wedges. Now even the hardest rock and punk acts that come through are all smiles."
