Content for the screen is remotely managed by SSI from their offices in Weimer and displayed via a play-out unit located at the airport. "The Lighthouse P6 6mm screen is the best quality screen at the best price for this application," comments SSI's Karsten Witt. "The airport is very pleased with the screen as it's good for their profile to have this sort of installation, as well as giving an added information service for their customers and providing them with a portion of the advertising revenue."
This continues a growing worldwide trend. A substantial new Lighthouse screen has been installed at Schipol Airport's Terminal 6, supplied by Dutch system integrator Hecla. Previous installations include both Hong Kong and Dubai airports. At Hong Kong a 5.12m (w) x 3.84m (h) Lighthouse 10mm LED screen was supplied to JC Decaux and the airport itself. Flanked on either side by Omega light boxes, it is positioned four metres above ground level at the main entrance of the arrivals hall to show a combination of tourist attractions, cultural exhibition news, weather, transportation information, locations of key airport facilities, Hong Kong SkyMart shopping offers and other useful information.
At Dubai's Sheikh Rashid terminal four, Lighthouse 10mm LED video screens take pride of place in the centre of the shopping mall as part of the redevelopment of the terminal. Each screen measure 17 square metres and all four are connected to a server allowing remote media transfer. Ambient light levels are high within the terminal and the screen was chosen specifically to cope with this. As the screens are positioned high up, the LEDs are angled downwards for optimum viewing.
"The superior quality of Lighthouse screens and our ability to be adapt them to the individual requirements of each airport has meant that we are seeing more and more of them around the world," says Lighthouse Managing Director, Mark Chan. "LED is an ideal technology for airports where ambient light levels are necessarily high and I'm sure that we'll be seeing more of them as the true benefits are more widely known."
