Stayin' Alive - Coldplay gave Glastonbury's grand finale with a little help from the Bee Gees. Barry Gibb joined the band for two Bee Gee covers - To Love Somebody and what Chris Martin called "the greatest song of all time", Stayin' Alive. Gibb was meant to play Glastonbury's "legend" slot this year, but pulled out when a family member fell ill. The Bee Gee tribute came towards the end of a set that defied the pouring rain. "This is our favourite place in the world!" declared Chris Martin.

Judgement Day - Led Zeppelin did not copy the opening chords of Stairway to Heaven from the US band Spirit, a US jury has found. The spectacular live event was illuminated with Clay Paky lights on a rig set up by lighting designer Giovanni Pinna. The rig featured 62 Mythos units, 32 Sharpys and eight Alpha Beam 700s.

"The Mythos units are really very versatile. I used them as the main fixtures on the lighting rig to illuminate both the audience and the stage. They were the most used lights:

USA - For the first 36 years of its existence, the Wichita Riverfest was held in May. Then in 2011, after rain put a damper on successive festivals, the event's organizers figured that moving it to June might change their luck. How right they were. Attendance has risen steadily since the rescheduling, ultimately breaking a record this year when a crowd of 450,000 visitors turned out for the nine-day celebration -- not a bad draw, considering that Wichita's population is 390,000.

A key attraction at the festival was the main concert stage, which featured 29 different bands performing under the light of an Erich Meitzner-designed rig that featured a collection of Rogue fixtures from Chauvet Professional, supplied by Parr Sound and Lighting of Great Bend, KS.

Meitzner positioned four Rogue R2 Beams on mid stage truss and four additional units on upstage truss. He also flew ei

South Africa - Blond Productions was involved, for the third consecutive year, to supply the full technical for the televised competition Clash of the Choirs held at Global Access Studios in Johannesburg. Mauritz Neethling from Blond was responsible for the lighting design, having control via a grandMA2 light. He also used a MA VPU plus MK2 (Video Processing Unit).

Filmed for Mzansi Channel on DSTV, the competition saw seven celebrity choirmasters assemble amateur singers who went head to head at the Clash of the Choirs. The competition kicked off at the end of 2015, with the finales held in April 2016. This meant the entire rig - the set designed and created by Dream Sets - had to come down and be put up again.

Recited daily by Hindus throughout the world, the 40 verses of this devotional mantra are an immense source of energy, focus and vitality for both the body and mind. Visiting venues ranging from 5,000 to 12,000 capacity, the focal point of the stage and set design were five raked pods, loaded with lights and flown above the stage to form a scalable roof - and featuring many of the 65 GLP impression X4 L's (supplied as part of the overall lighting inventory by PRG Hamburg).

Each pod contained eight of the X4 L among the lighting in each of the pods, with another 14 on the front truss to fire into the audience.

USA / UK - The success of GLP's impression X4 Bars was recognised for the second time in a month - by major industry bodies on both sides of the Atlantic.

Following its Live Design Award in New York earlier in the month the product picked up a similar 'Lighting Product of the Year' gong at the Association of British Theatre Technicians Awards 2016, which took place just over a week later during the ABTT Theatre Show at Alexandra Palace, London.

It was voted after an experienced jury of working practitioners and industry peers had considered entries for this year's ABTT Awards which were carefully reviewed on the day.

The GLP impression X4 Bar 20 LED Batten stood out to the judges, who remarked that "GLP's new Batten, with its innovative zoom feature and impressive light output, reinvents the light curtain."

GLP Inc president, Mark Ravenhill, commented, "We are deli

USA - The electronica artist Brillz (aka Sami Diament) is bent on adding the term Twonk to the lexicon of musical genres.

This aggressive music calls for a hard-hitting lightshow, which is precisely what designers Ethan Kairer, Jim Feeney and Corey Mattonen delivered on the artist's recent tour with help from a collection of Nexus 4x4 LED panels and MVP Ta8 Curve video panels from Chauvet Professional.

The designers used 10 of the Nexus panels and a 12' x 12' wall of MVP Ta 8 panels, all supplied by Zeo Brothers, on the sold-out Brillz Twonk Di Nation Tour to create a visual impression that was as punchy as the artist's 808 kick drums and sub base lines.

"Intensity, brightness and colour were all out in front on this tour," said Mattonen. "We wanted a rig that matched the energy level of the music, so the Chauvet Nexus and video panels fit right our plans. Ethan Kairer

USA - Robe once again had a big presence at Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas, another high profile event on the US EDM calendar - following spectacular performances for the brand at ULTRA Miami and Coachella.

As the main production stage of the event, the star-studded line up included Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Afrojack, Eric Prydz, Kaskade and numerous others.

Steve and the team from SJ Lighting presented a completely new visual concept that incorporated lighting, video and set / structural design. The architecture was based on an enigmatic 360 degree coliseum look - classical lines with industrial attitude - a provocative,

South Africa - Thankfully no one was injured in a massive fire, which burnt down Durban Christian Centre in Mayville, KwaZulu Natal on the evening of 8 June. Three days later, the sky was lit up by 12 Clay Paky Mythos, all pointed towards a star, as the congregation met together for a service held in their parking lot.

One of the largest churches in Durban, the 5,500 seat auditorium known as the Jesus Dome, was a house of prayer for all nations and a place where miracles happened.

Having regularly lit events in this venue, lighting designer Michael Broderick along with his friend in the industry, Brandon Bunyan of Black Coffee, came up with an idea to use the Mythos fixtures in an act of compassion for the church's loss.

"When we told DWR's Duncan Riley about our idea, he insisted that the globes in the Mythos be 100% new and that the lights be freshly serviced," said

USA - Journalists from far beyond New England are used to coming to Westin Copley Place, Boston, to cover news. US presidents and Supreme Court justices have frequently given speeches here, and one would-be Commander and Chief, Mitt Romney, used it as his primary election night headquarters.

Recently, though, members of the fourth estate visited the elegant hotel on the banks of the Charles River to make news, rather than cover it, by participating in the 39th annual Boston/New England Emmy Awards. The high-profile event, which has helped propel many careers to national stardom stature, draws journalists from six states. Setting an appropriately elegant tone for the evening ceremonies was a glitzy video wall and lighting display created by Darren Lussier of Image Production Services, using an array of Chauvet Professional fixtures and video panels.

With a seductive and contemporary feel to the set, Roger has employed an old favourite, the MAC Aura, using over 30 to compliment the look.

"It's a striking new set from designer Alex Craig, the original idea was for it to be against a white cyc," says Roger. "After discussions it was decided to set it against blacks and, as I'm desperately trying to avoid using smoke and beams where I can, Auras were the perfect choice to fill in l

Europe - Yvan Pe?ard, Ayrton's chief design and technology officer, has continued to work his magic on array of innovations which have enlarged the scope of several of the Ayrton ranges, the latest of which is MagicPanel-FX, a new fixture with visually stunning square optics. MagicPanel-FX is an exciting new multi-function, multi-use luminaire which marks another step in the evolution of the MagicPanel family, says the company.
