USA - Following the live broadcast of the National Hockey League's post-season awards show, CBC lighting designer Brad Dickson praised the 24 Vari*Lite VL3000 Spot luminaries he used in the rig: "The VL3000 Spot was the main light," Dickson said, "mainly because of its zoom range. In the set itself, we had a bunch of headers, so we were tight for real estate. We needed fixtures that would give us as much spread possible in a short space. That's why the VL3000 luminaires were chosen."

Although the trim was 27ft, the set height was just 20ft, and the point of focus was only 10 to 15 feet away in some places. The 10- 60° zoom range on the VL3000 Spot luminaires provided Dickson with the smooth beam spread he needed. Because the show was televised live on CBC, Dickson also needed fixtures that would provide good skin tone colours. The ability of the VL3000 Spot

UK - Stand-up, sausages, a shindig and the support of Stage Electrics, marked the first ever fund-raising event at Battersea Art Centre. Stage Electrics donated the use of sound and lighting equipment to support BAC's contribution to developing theatre arts on a local, national and international level. UK - Lighting Technology Projects has supplied and commissioned architectural lighting for the Ten Pin Megabowl complex in Cambridge. Color Kinetics' ColorBlast 12 LED wash units were specified by the Nottingham-based lighting design practice Into Lighting, for the eye-catching installation in the venue's main hall. LTP's Terry Reeves worked closely on the project with designer Jonathan Rycroft. The wall-washing, colour changing fixtures were chosen for their design and uniform colour range.

Other factors were cost effectiveness and build quality, and also Lighting Technology's recommendation after using them on numerous other projects. Terry Reeves explains, "The ColorBlast 12 gave the right quality of light output and is also easily controllable." From the initial design brief, LTP worked with Into Lighting, creating several different solutions in a mock-up scenario.

USA - US manufacturer Light Stream Controls (LSC) has announced that it is re-branding its lighting controllers under the name of its affiliated Elation Professional division. All LSC controllers will now bear the Elation brand name in every market where the products are sold.

The name change was implemented in light of the growing popularity its controllers have enjoyed in Europe, Australia and other areas of the world where the Elation brand is known, according to Scott Davies, general manager of the American DJ Group of Companies, the parent company of both LSC and Elation Professional.

LSC controllers are being marketed internationally by the same distributors, to the same customers, as our Elation lighting products, so it makes sense that they should have the same brand identity," commented Davies. "This is especially true because the Elation name has become so

Germany - Major has developed the Source Four as CDM version, in cooperation with ETC. Major's Source Four PAR CDM combines the compact dimensions, versatility and performance of the Source Four PAR with the well-known discharge lamp technology. The result, say the company, is a spotlight with an extremely high lifetime (more than 9,000 hours), but a low energy consumption and a solid colour temperature (3,000 or 4,200°K).

The fixture will be mainly used in retail, exhibition and conference environments. An MCM (metal cold mirror) version boasts heat emission to the back of the fixture of approximately 90%, making the fixture suitable also for more sensitive environments such as art exhibitions, etc. With interchangeable front lenses and different colour filters, the possibilities for use are almost endless, say Major.

UK - Pearce Hire supplied power distribution and lighting equipment for the 150th Louis Vuitton celebration party this June. The exclusive party took place at the National Trust site, Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, after the '14th Louis Vuitton Classic' car show. Canada - Fashion Cares - an annual benefit for the AIDS Committee of Toronto - was held this year at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and featured well-known entertainers including fashion icon Linda Evangelista as host, as well as Patti Labelle, Simone Denny and DJ The Lady Bunny. Alongside these was a new star making its debut on the fashion circuit: the Versa Tile system from Element Labs.

Chris Pegg of Westbury National Show Systems, who served as the show's lighting designer, specified the system. "I'd seen the tiles in London last year and I thought they were the coolest thing in the universe," he says. "The creative director was looking for somethingthat had a mirror-bally type of feel-but that was updated and maybe a little modernized. The design already had a video element, but since the tiles are where lighting meets video, it really all fit together.

Germany - When the innovative set designer Florian Wieder was looking to create a futuristic image for the German Channel SAT1's version of celebrity impersonation show, Star Duell, he turned to G-LEC Europe to provide an out-of-the-ordinary LED solution.

G-LEC's sales director Christoph Müssener explained: "Florian approached us with a rather unusual request. He was looking for a way to make the LED screens flexible in order to curve and bend them over several levels of the stage. While doing this it was also vital that the LED solution guaranteed transparency too."

G-LEC realized that the way to create a system which would work to Wieder's designs was to devise a frameless installation, so provided 1080 ClassicTubes, all mounted individually, to create a series of curves and waves across the set. Müssener continued: "Turning Florian's ideas into a reality wo

USA - American DJ has introduced the new Reflex 300. An updated version of its popular Reflex dual moonflower effect, the Reflex 300 uses two high-powered 150W lamps to create significantly brighter, more vibrant colours as it bounces, bends and reflects an array of beams from its twin scanning mirrors, say American DJ.

A modern, high-tech case joins together the two moonflowers of the Reflex 300. Two rotating mirrors - one on each side of the unit - reflect light beams from the 150W lamps and project 'twin' multi-dichroic colour patterns over a wide area. The beams themselves rotate to the beat of the music, resulting in even wilder pulsating movement. Another major improvement in the Reflex 300, say the company, is that it has no duty cycle and can run continuously all night. A high-velocity fan whisks heat away from the unit, so there's never any need to shut down to cool.

The show's designs, which will make heavy use of video projection, are by William Dudley, while the show's lighting designer is Paul Pyant.

Facing the challenge of matching lighting to the projected scenery while not obscuring the projections, Pyant has opted for a core rig of automated lanterns - but using predominantly tungsten-based units. His rig includes City Theatr

Posner's automated lighting rig at the Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumount Theatre also included 15 VL2000 Wash units. All the Vari*Lite fixtures were provided by PRG.

"In this one particular scene, the VL3000 Spot fixtures' major task is to provide the water effect," Posner explained. "But they are used in multiple other looks in every scene throughout the production." One of the most intriguing scenes on the journey down the River Styx is
