UK - Bandit Lites UK is supplying lighting production for the UK and European leg of the Moody Blues' 2004 world tour. Bandit Lites Inc also services the band's lengthy annual American tours. Other territories on the current itinerary include Australia and New Zealand in early 2005.

Lighting designer Mick Thornton has worked with the band for the last five years, each tour turning the stage into a completely different and eye-catching visual environment for the performance. Keeping to a basic front and back truss format for his primary building blocks, this year Thornton added three overhead triangular trusses which move, and four vertical upstage towers.

The stage set - as devised by Thornton - is all in white, including the cyc, which has a four-channel star cloth behind it and the stage floor, which is covered by a white carpet. Parts of the set also have white scrim stretc

USA - LDI 2004 will not be business as usual as far as Chauvet is concerned, the company promises. The manufacturer will cast its newest luminaires as supermodels on a fashion show runway, under the theme 'Welcome to the Future'.

"This is sort of a coming out party," said product development manager Barry Abrams, adding that hitherto-unseen technology will be on display, reflecting its largest-ever product range.

The new autumn collection includes four moving-yoke lights: the Legend 250RT Spot, Legend 250WT Wash, Legend250 Zoom and the 18-channel Legend 575 Zoom.

Also on show will be the Trackscan 250 DSR- ILS scanner. France - PLASA Award-winner Sunlite is introducing its new Color Manager software at the LDI show on Booth 1341. This new tool allows designers to work with RGB or CMY fixtures with the ease of use of a drawing software package, with familiar tools such as pen, colour picker, paint bucket and copy/paste - and also features powerful wizards including images and video loading, text scrolling and more. The tool is compatible with LED device matrices as well as conventional fixtures. Color Manager will be included with Sunlite 2004 and Easy Stand Alone software from November onwards.

The Easy Stand Alone, a winner of the PLASA 2004 Awards for Innovation, will be on show in its new IP version. The Stand Alone USB-DMX interface has been a great success since it was released and the new Stand Alone Ethernet DMX 512 interface (IP version) makes it possible to work either locally or via

USA - Vari-Lite has introduced the new VL2500 Spot and VL2500 Wash luminaires at the ETS-LDI exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new fixtures, say the company, exemplify its commitment to provide valuable lighting tools designers can use for any type of project or event. VL says the VL2500 fixtures include an improved CYM colour-mixing system, a coated glass dimmer wheel and a separate dual-blade strobe system to its popular Series 2000 product line.

The CYM colour-mixing system offers designers a myriad of colour options, from pastels to deep colours. The Vari-Lite colour-mixing system is fast, responding almost like a fixed colour wheel, so designers can quickly snap from one colour to the next. The VL2500 fixtures also have an 11-slot fixed colour wheel that allows designers even more freedom to create new looks and designs by laying any of the 11 colours over open white or

New Zealand - Selecon has unveiled two new ranges of theatre lighting luminaires that promise more light and a smooth well-controlled beam with seamless blending, evenness and consistency. Available as single, 3- and 4-way battens, single luminaires can also be joined together to create custom battens using Selecon's unique slot lock joining system. A choice of lamp options provide all the light required with no distracting spill.

The new HUI range replaces Selecon's Acclaim Cyc, Flood and Groundrow range from October 2004. Fitted with a 500W lamp, it is suitable for cycs up to approximately 5m high. The use of the 800W P2/11 lamp allows for high intensity colour saturated cycs, smaller studios and to light higher cycs where luminaire hanging height is limited.

The LUI range of 1000W luminaires is designed for larger cycs or longer throws, particularly for users unable to affo

UK - White Light continues its long association with LDI, exhibiting at this year's ETS-LDI Trade Show, where its star feature is the award-winning Digital Festoon System. This radical rethink of conventional festoon lighting allows each lamp along a festoon to be individually dimmed under the control of either a laptop or via DMX from a lighting console. Giving the possibility of creating stunning light displays from apparently simple strings of light bulbs, the Digital Festoon System carries both power and DMX using a patented data system. Up to 200 lamps can be controlled from a single Digital Festoon System power supply.

Launched at this year's PLASA Show, the Digital Festoon System was one of the winners of the PLASA Show's Awards for Innovation. It will no-doubt appeal to those creating novel light shows and - of particular relevance to the Las Vegas market - those lookin

The Laidman technology includes Laidman's pioneering design and production processes in 1978 related to his Saturn I - IV LED lighting systems capable of generating multiple variable coloured lighting effects using pulse width modulation to control intensity. These systems were the first known to be designed, manufactured and sold commercially incorporating multiple LEDs to generate colour-changing light in lighting fixtures worldwide.

Laidman was founder and president of The Sound Chamber, one of the premier nightclub and discotech lighting designers and manufacturers in the 1970s and 80s. The Sound Chamber sold and rented the Saturn LED lighting fixtures t

Italy - The 2004 edition of Festivalbar once again saw the participation of international artistes and the highly spectacular staging of a travelling show that had dates in Milan, Catania and Lignano Sabbiadoro, as well as the traditional finale hosted by the Arena of Verona on 18 September. The set featured numerous LED screens, which featured abstract

UK - Dave Morrisey, lighting designer and technician at Manchester's three highly active Academy venues, came up with a better solution than air conditioning at the 500 capacity Manchester Academy 3 (formerly known as the "Hop & Grape") when the venue decided to do something about its "sweat box" reputation. They initially considered upgrading the air conditioning, and faced a bill of about £50,000 - but Morrissey thought of another way.

Onstage, a large proportion of the heat was generated by the 24 Par 64 cans lighting the small area. This gave Morrissey a flash of lateral inspiration. He'd originally seen James Thomas's PixelPARs in action at PLASA 2002 - when they were launched. Morrissey approached JTE, and worked out a deal for replacing the conventional Pars with PixelPAR 90s. Including the wiring, it cost a little over half of what the air-con costs

USA - Entertainment lighting manufacturer High End Systems debuted the DL2 - the third generation in its digital lighting line - at the ETS-LDI 2004 Trade Show in Las Vegas last week (22-24 October). According to HES, the DL2 unites the worlds of automated lighting and digital video to create 'virtual scenery' but with additional advanced features. DL2 is a "smart" automated lighting system featuring an integrated digital media server, say the company. In one single package is housed a light engine, media server and content - and it hangs and acts like an automated light.

DL2 also reduces space and installation time, with no need for RGB cabling, and servers are no longer necessary at the front-of-house position. DL2 resembles an intelligent moving luminaire and controls just as easily, with plug-and-play operation using standard DMX cabling and protocols.

Their purpose was to augment existing equipment to light the Queen, the Presiding Officer and the Scottish National Orchestra, amongst others.

"The Holyrood building has been at the centre of the news in Scotland ever since it was first mooted, so we were very pleased to be able to contribute to the opening of the Parliament's official home," says black light managing director Gavin Stewart.

"It's was another example which sh

Sweden - In 2002 the old Market Hall in Uppsala, Sweden was severely damaged in a fire which left little of the old building behind. Now after two years of work, the Hall has been restored as a fresh vegetable, fish and meat market featuring several top quality restaurants. The owner of the restaurants, Svenssons Krogar, decided to give each restaurant its own specific style, and brought Gothenburg-based Diroco Sound and Light in to the planning process early on to develop a well thought out lighting scheme. Diroco set out to integrate Martin intelligent luminaires along with conventional lighting to create the environment the client was looking for.

As the building was not yet complete when Diroco was contracted, they used Martin's ShowDesigner lighting design software package to create the lighting solution. It was, among other things, the ShowDesigner that convinced the cl

UK - Edinburgh lighting specialist black light recently lit a forest walk in the heart of Perthshire, known as Big Tree Country. The annual Enchanted Forest walk at The Hermitage, situated near the town of Dunkeld and owned by the National Trust for Scotland, has become a very popular attraction for both locals and tourists.

Open to the public from 22 October to 7 November, this is the first year that black light has designed and installed the lighting for the Enchanted Forest. "The Hermitage had come up with a theme of the four seasons, but that wasn't entirely practical. For example, how do you portray 'summer' in a forest at night in the middle of autumn?" says black light's Paul McGreal. "We thought that having focal points was important, as opposed to a linear route which is more-or-less the same throughout. We felt the four elements - Earth, Fire, Air and Wa
