France - Pascal Boulanger, lighting chief at Paris's Ope?ra Garnier, is, like many theatre technicians, a man with an increasing number of jobs to do and fewer people to help him. Successive pieces of employment legislation have seriously affected the French lighting industry; chief among them are restrictions on night working and a new 35 hour working week. So Boulanger decided that quiet, reliable and accurate moving lights were the solution - and was impressed when ETC's French distributor Avab Transtechnik introduced him to the ETC Source Four Revolution.
"We did a number of on-site tests for things which aren't in the technical specs," explains Boulanger, "such as the noise of a movement or change of gobo, or the reset time of the unit." China - Lighting designer Sha XiaoLan of Beijing-based practice Feng Shang Shiji specified 159 Robe moving lights for the colourful and energetic Ocean Fantasy musical show, a central feature of the new Olympic Sailing Centre Theatre in Qingdao, China.
The 700 capacity new build theatre is right on the new waterfront development at the seaside city of Qingdao in China's eastern Shandong province, which hosted the 2008 Olympic sailing competitions.
The nightly Ocean Fantasy is a fast paced, humorous five-chapter performance created by Mr Wang XiaoLe, relating a series of stories from the sea and capturing some of the culture and history of the local area which is also famous for its beer. The show has already become a big hit with tourists and the locals.

UK - HSL supplied lighting and video equipment plus crew, and designed a bespoke DJ booth for two recent sold-out performances by The Swedish House Mafia at London's Brixton Academy.
The shows were presented and produced by Cream and Loudsound Events and HSL was working for technical co-ordinators, BPM, who also supplied pyro and lasers.
SHM Management's Amy Thomson's brief to BPM was to have the 'biggest and best' show possible. BPM worked closely with HSL to design a full show based on a four section lighting rig, action-packed with strobe pods, moving heads, specialist LED products and three large video wall sections.

USA - Total Structures reports great interest at the recent LDI in its RSC Lightlock which was making its US debut.
The RSC Lightlock now gives designers the ability to dampen the natural tendency for moving lights to twist in reaction to the fixture's pan movement, allowing the light to hit the focus point without swinging back and forth. Live Design awarded the RSC Lightlock the Best Debuting Product Award in the Rigging and Staging category. The award, presented during Saturday evening's festivities on the show floor, recognizes the RSC Lightlock for "increasing the range of uses for moving head lighting fixtures, while reducing the amount of rigging equipment needed to place fixtures within facilities and productions".

Royal News - The Queen has been entertained by a host of stars at the first Royal Variety Performance to be held in Blackpool since 1955. The town's illuminations had lit the way as the royal party made its way to the Opera House in the Winter Gardens. The charity event's host, comedian Peter Kay, welcomed the Queen to "the entertainment capital of the world". The show's performers included Lady Gaga, Bette Midler, Whoopi Goldberg and Britain's Got Talent winners Diversity.
Blackpool's Opera House, which seats 2,900 people, was used to host the show in the 1950s era of acts such as Morecambe and Wise, Arthur Askey and George Formby. The annual event was first staged in 1912 and the proceeds go towards the Variety Artistes' Benevolent Fund. USA - Giorgio Armani's newest flagship store on New York's Fifth Avenue has been wrapped in a custom Martin LED display designed by design firm Speirs and Major Associates (SaMA). The four-floor glass box store is located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 56th Street in the heart of the shopping district, prime space for a flagship architectural fashion store.
Speirs and Major have worked on other Armani flagship stores, notably Armani Store Ginza in Tokyo. "The Tokyo and New York stores are very much about the impression of the Armani brand through an architectural form," states SaMA director Keith Bradshaw. "On Fifth Avenue we developed the idea of wrapping the glass box in an LED screen, effectively extending the impact of the store out onto the street." The animated facade is double-sided and is visible from inside the store at the restaurant level.

And with LD Matt Arthur inheriting the pre-existing American stage set (which included the original GLP Impressions on the technical rider) he took the opportunity to upgrade to the automated optical zoom function, with 10° - 26° light distribution angle, principally to accent the set design's unusual eyeball feature with minimum spillage of light.
Each show featured six Impression Zooms, suspended from the mid truss for maximum stage versatility, with a further two used selectively as ground effects.

The 15th International trade fair for lighting, light technology and intelligent building technology drew to a close with plenty of optimism and an outstanding atmosphere, say the organisers. 305 exhibitors and 20,224 industry visitors enjoyed "excellent contacts and promising discussions" and are looking to the future with great confidence.

UK - Manchester-based DBN Lighting has completed the design, supply and installation of lighting for the new Da Vinci - the Genius exhibition at the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester.
DBN was working for Grande Exhibitions from Melbourne Australia and also for MOSI, and the project was designed and managed for them by Nigel Walker. The Da Vinci Exhibition occupies most of the top floor of The 1830 Warehouse, a Grade 1 Listed timber frame building, originally completed in 1830 as the Manchester terminus of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway.
Da Vinci - The Genius features four rooms, some sub-divided and a small theatre space that the DBN team created with rigging and drapes, plus a separate area devoted solely to the Mona Lisa.

USA - Pyro and special effects company Le Maitre exhibited at the recent LDI show in Orlando. It was Le Maitre's first major foray into the US market since setting up Le Maitre America earlier in the year.
Rick Wilson comments, "It gave us an opportunity to exhibit many of the new products now available and perhaps more importantly meet up with many of our American customers. The whole exercise proved an enormous success for Le Maitre presence in the US and we look forward to building on this."
