Germany - A Jands Vista I3 console, running the next generation Vista v2 software, was specified by installation artist and lighting designer Fred Pommerehn to control the lighting for a specially commissioned work on display as part of the World Wildlife Fund's Deutschland wird Wald Meister 2011 (Year of the Forest) campaign in Berlin, Germany.

The Year of the Forest initiative is supported by prominent German celebrities, and the launch featured a media conference the day after the installation went live. The lit work became a local and international talking point, as well as a popular attraction enjoyed by press, public and passers by.

The temporary installation - which was in place on the steps of the Konzerthaus in Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt square - featured 26 tree sculptures measuring up to six metres in height, each carefully crafted by Pommerehn usi

USA - The collapse in high winds of a temporary concert stage at the Indiana State Fair on Saturday claimed five lives and left almost 50 injured, according to US news reports. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse began on Sunday, and its findings will be watched with great interest by the event production industry.

In addition to issues surrounding the build and stability of the structure itself, the question of why the event was not stopped and the audience evacuated far sooner will surely form a major part of the investigation.

It is reported that organisers had urged audience members to seek shelter just minutes before the sudden winds hit the stage structure - far too late, as it turned out, for an effective evacuation. With news reports claiming that forecasters at the National Weather Service had predicted the strong winds of 60-70mph up to t

UK - The first six pre-production prototype Components Co SMART:e fixtures have not sat still for long, no sooner had they been assembled and bench tested they were straight out of the door and on their way to London to be used at Ghost the Musical's press night party at the Corinthia Hotel.

Ghost associate LD, Tim Lutkin, got his first glimpse of the SMART:e whilst chatting to one of the product's designers recently and offered to give them their first real test.

"They're a fantastic bit of kit," says Lutkin. "I just can't get over how small and light they are, the battery life is great, the colour mix is brilliant, especially all the pastel shades you can get by adding the white in. But the best bit for me is their look, they are just so smart, they don't look like a marquee up-lighter and for me that is the deal clincher."

USA - The Platinum Beam 5R from Elation uses the new, advanced MSD Platinum 5R lamp from Philips, an innovation that allows manufacturers to design fixtures that are much more compact and energy efficient. Although it looks like a traditional ACL effect, with a concentrated "searchlight" type beam that's comparable to much higher wattage fixtures in brightness, the Platinum Beam 5R's ultra-efficient lamp runs on only 189 watts.

"Back in the Seventies, ACL effects became very popular at rock concerts. They produced powerful, tight beacon-like beams that resembled the lights of an aircraft on a landing strip," said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. "But the Platinum Beam 5R certainly isn't your father's ACL light. Already seen and used on TV shows, concerts, stadiums and festivals, this small but powerful moving head can be used in a

Denmark - Following the energy-efficient formula, first implemented at Roskilde in 2009, the low consumption of GLP's impression LED range was again in harmony with the 'Green Footsteps' programme of Denmark's largest music festival - on a vastly increased scale.

Production substantially ramped up the number of GLP LED fixtures, so that this year the main Orange stage boasted no fewer than 174 impression 90 units and 48 impression XL, presenting the house and incoming LD's with a vast colour palette from which to set up their cues.

There was a major demand on the inventory of Danish based rental company, Comtech, who also supplied the lighting systems for other stages. This included new generation GLP products such as the impression Spot One - with 24 designed into the rig on the Odeon stage alongside 56 impression 90's, while a further 36 impression 90s lit up the Pavilion st
