Germany - Rap band Materia has recently toured 14 cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland under the motto Zum Glück in die Zukunft II (luckily into the future II). The lighting designer Tjorre Hasubski counted on - among other lights - 22 Alpha Spot QWO 800s and 20 Clay Paky Sharpys. They were controlled by a full-size grandMA2, a grandMA2 light, one VPU basic MK2 and two 12 x 2.3 kVA digital dimmers, all made by MA Lighting.

Hasubski said,"The basic idea was that the show had to convey emotions through video images. However it was important for the video not to become too dominant. It had to fit harmonically into the general design concept. During some parts of the concert, lights were used to enhance the video components. However it was necessary to avoid putting the artists into the shadow while doing so. On the other hand, the light also had to stand out from

The lighting kit for the one off show was delivered by leading Israeli rental company Argaman Systems from Rosh Hayain, and included 32 x Robe Pointes, 76 x LEDBeam 100s and 16 x LEDWash 600s - all from Robe's Robin series.

Some of the additional Robe fixtures needed to service this show were supplied to Argaman by Danor Rental. USA - How do you top something that's already become one of the most widely followed lightshows ever? It isn't easy, but somehow LD Steve Lieberman manages to pull off this feat every year at the Electric Daisy Carnival, Insomniac Events' internationally acclaimed three-day EDM festival.

This year's Electric Daisy Carnival drew over 390,000 fans from every state and 40 countries, according to published reports. "Our vision for EDC is constantly evolving," said Lieberman, president of SJ Lighting. "We are focused on creating environments for the audience to experience the show to its maximum potential; and for artists to have a pl

Rule Changes - Oscar organisers have put new rules in place to ensure fair campaigning in its music categories. Academy members are no longer allowed to contact voters via any means to promote their song for nomination. Members will also not be allowed to attend a live performance of eligible songs unless attached to a screening.

It comes following the disqualification in the original song category this year after it emerged a songwriter had emailed voters to consider his song. Alone Yet Not Alone, the title track from an independent Christian-faith film, beat other high-profile contenders to secure a surprise place on the shortlist.

It was later discovered Bruce Broughton - a former Academy governor and current executive committee member - emailed at least 70 of the 240-member music branch during the nomination period to bring his song to their attention.

UK - ELC Lighting launched the Buddy, a new Ethernet to DMX node at this year's ABTT show. Designed and engineered as an entry level product, the Buddy was designed with students and newcomers to the market in mind, but is already being hailed as an essential piece of kit for lighting designers to carry in their back pockets, with over 200 units already sold, the company reports.

Speaking at the official launch of the product, Silvio Cibien said, "Buddy has all the functions required to enable a user to get DMX out of their laptop at an entry level price. We feel students and newcomers to the industry need to be able to experiment without the fear of doing something wrong, or losing all their work. The Buddy will enable them to program and create with ease, on their own laptop. But it's also an ideal piece of kit for any lighting designer who may suddenly find they need acc

UAE - Seasoned lighting designer Debbi Fowler made excellent use of an arsenal of of Clay Paky lighting fixtures to illuminate Lionel Richie during his open-air gig at the Media City Amphitheatre, Dubai.

Fowler worked closely with Dubai based hire outfit Eclipse, which recently supplied equipment for superstars such as Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars. For the Richie show Eclipse furnished Fowler with an impressive stock of Clay Paky fixtures.

"When creating a lighting design I like to focus on layering different fixtures to create texture, this means that the fixtures I choose and how I position them is crucial," explains Fowler. "For this design I knew that the extra 'punch' of the Clay Paky would make a real difference. However it was not until the actual show that the lights' performance drove home just how bright they are."

Germany - The final of Germany's 2014 Next Top Model talent show provided an opportunity for lighting designer Manuel Da Costa to put Robe's Robin CycFX 8 fixtures through their paces. Staged in the Lanxess Arena, Cologne and attended by 15,000 people, it was also broadcast live on German TV Pro7.

Manuel was lighting the series for the fourth time and was also the director of photography, so getting the right mix of lighting for both TV and live elements was crucial. While it's a 'given' for these type of shows that the runway has to be optimised for naturalistic flesh tones and shadow-less illumination of faces, it was also an interesting mix of aesthetics - fashion meets live arena show!

He used 44 x CycFX 8s in total, mostly rigged to the side stage wings and used to wash parts of the catwalk as general illumination and also to create some bold and distinctive effect

Australia - Award-winning Australian lighting designer Flynn Talbot utilised the intense colour of three Philips Selecon PLprofile1 LED luminaires to add another dimension to his latest light installation Primary at the PSAS gallery in Perth.

A three-sided triangular wall installation made from cardboard, Primary explores the three primary colours of light - red, green and blue, with the structure designed to fragment the light and demonstrate how coloured light is mixed.

"For this project I needed intense colour and absolutely pure light," explains Talbot. "The installation is purposefully designed to break up light into many shadows but unless the light source was completely even, the effect and the magic would have been lost. I needed a smooth and colour-rich shift between primary colours, so I chose the Philips Selecon PLprofile1 LED luminaires

France - Chromlech, the French manufacturer behind innovative LED lighting products such as Jarag and Elidy, has gone out of business with the loss of 14 jobs. NKown as an innovator of lighting products, Chromlech enjoyed great success with its Jarag line of LED modules, which sold well for years, and still selling right up to the company's demise. Gleamer, a dimmer dedicated to low-voltage lighting, won a PLASA Award for Innovation in 2011. Then came Elidy, a striking 5x5 LED matrix tile producing warm white beams of light, launched at the PLASA Show in 2012.

However, copies of the Elidy concept, made in China, began to appear on the market with months of the product's release, and Chromlech found itself unable to take legal action to protect their intellectual property. Two patents covered Elidy - one for the technology and one for the design, or form factor. Unfortunately for
