South Africa - Gearhouse South Africa has launched a new company that will provide a complete power distribution service for the Live Events industry. Gearhouse Power operates between Cape Town and Johannesburg as a separate business unit within the Gearhouse group.

Gearhouse Power is headed by Antony Sackstein, who initially worked for Gearhouse managing director Ofer Lapid as a freelance lighting technician at Lighting Unlimited in 1992, moving to a permanent position in the company in 1995.

The new company is able to offer clients a comprehensive range of power generators with a range of 300, 200 and 100 KVA generators on hand.

All generators have their own trailers so each may be used as a separate unit for individual events. All of the machines can be integrated and they are all cam-locked and power locked, which reduces the set-up time required on site, a great advantage when set-up times are restricted in a specific venue. Each generator has up to 15 hours of running time on the machines, which is another important benefit when on site.

"All of our machines are compatible with those of existing generator suppliers in the market," commented Sackstein. "With our experience over time, we have been able to identify exactly what the needs are within the industry for a complete power distribution service. For example, production companies are frequently faced with the difficulty of an insufficient power source available at the event venue to run their event or, as is the case of many outdoor events, no power at all.

"Another point we considered is that power distribution is a fairly specialised field and most clients feel more comfortable when there is a specialist technician on site who has the expertise to handle that part of the technical set-up as well as providing the necessary equipment."

Although the primary function of Gearhouse Power is to service events for Gearhouse clients, it is likely that the company will extend its services to the broader event market. "Because we operate as an independent company under the umbrella of the Gearhouse group, we anticipate supplying our service to outside clients in addition to supplying the power distribution requirements for events for which Gearhouse provides technical production services," explained Sackstein. "To begin with, the new company will operate with seven or eight staff members, but depending on the demand in the market, we may increase the number of personnel as the business grows."
