UK - Visitors to this year's PLASA Show (running from September 10-13 at Earls Court One, London) will be able to learn more about PLASA's work on the development of a new National Rigging Certificate - an initiative designed to give riggers working in all sectors a framework by which their expertise and knowledge can be measured.

Over the last year, PLASA has been working closely with the industry and a range of government bodies to develop a scheme that will not only serve the specific needs of the industry, but also achieve national recognition.

A Rigging Advisory Group, consisting of key figures from the rigging industry, has been established and has been working closely with PLASA on the development of the Certificate, most critically on the content of the qualification and on how the assessment process will be delivered. This consultation has allowed PLASA to develop an inclusive Certificate that will be applicable to a broad range of sectors, including conference, corporate events, touring, broadcast, theatre and live arts.

In addition, the Advisory Group has selected the initial rigging assessors, who are currently undertaking assessment pilots to demonstrate that they meet the standards within the National Rigging Certificate. Because PLASA is keen to ensure that the scheme meets the highest standards, each assessor is also working towards achieving an A1 Award - the nationally recognised award in assessment - a move felt essential by PLASA to guarantee the integrity of the scheme.

Rigging Assessors and members of the Rigging Advisory Group will be present on the PLASA Stand (FF1) during the course of the PLASA Show and will be able to provide further details of the scheme and how it will work. Visitors to the stand will be able to find out more about the assessment entry routes and an outline of what a candidate needs to know and understand, as well as the practical rigging skills that they would be expected to demonstrate during their assessment.

To date, over 500 people have registered their interest in the National Rigging Certificate, which has also attracted the support of the major venues, production companies and organisations within the industry. The scheme will 'go live' in early 2007, when the first candidates undertake their assessments.

If you are interested in the development of the Certificate, or would like further information, visit the PLASA Show, contact PLASA on 01323 410335, or e-mail the address below.
