Broadcasting from the company's showroom in the Czech Republic, Josef Valchar, CEO of Robe, described the BMFL as "The best fixture we have ever made".
"We have listened to the wishes and needs of lighting designers, rental companies and technicians from every corner of the industry, all around the world. We really believe we have created a product that will deliver both good short- and long-term returns on your investment."
"It is a big, powerful light or large venues, with a big, fat front lens full of light. Because of its relatively small size, it can be used for any application in TV, theatres or concert venues."
More than three years in development, the BMFL is a compact luminaire weighing just 36kg, making it by far the lightest fixture in its class. It uses a brand new lamp from Osram, specifically designed for Robe, which can be operated at 1700W, 1500W or 1200W. Power mode can be selected via the touchscreen interface or via a dedicated DMX channel. The lamp has a CRI of 92 and colour temperature of 6000K, and produces an output of 250,000 lux at 5m / 2500 lux at 50m.
The BMFL offers smooth dimming, and a colour mixing system that can produce both light pastel shades and rich, saturated colours. "This is the best colour mixing system ever seen in a fixture," said Valchar.
Other features include a dual graphic wheel, as first introduced in Robe's MMX Spot fixture; a very fast iris; two rotating gobo wheels; with high-definition glass air effects and break-up gobos; variable frost; two rotating prisms (six-way linear and six-way circular); zoom optics with an 11-1 ratio (from 5° to 55° "all in a split-second," said Valchar. "It's an effect on its own."); and tracking focus to keep image sharp from end to end of the zoom range.
Pan and tilt movement is "far quicker than anything else of this size and power," said Valchar, adding: "In fact . . . 20 times faster than Usain Bolt."
Another feature is EMS - Electronic Motion Stabiliser. "This is the latest invention from Robe," said Valchar, "EMS is reducing the beam deviation caused by movement or vibration of the truss or set. The image stays right there where you put it."
Valchar concluded: "I think you will agree we have not only listened, we have delivered, and in so many ways. I truly believe this is the best fixture we have ever made."
