The Starter Set for an S/PDIF connection.
France - At the AES Convention in Paris, Neumann presented an entire series of new products: Solution-D, the Neumann digital microphone family, is expanding. Following the lead of the D-01, the digital large diaphragm microphone with 15 different directional characteristics, the well-known, successful miniature microphone series 180 is now entering the digital.

With the new digital models KM 183 D, KM 184 D and KM 185 D, three different directional characteristics are being offered initially; four others will follow in 2007. The modular construction of the new microphones permits the passive omnidirectional, cardioid and supercardioid capsules to be combined with the KM D output stage.

In the microphone, the proven Neumann A/D converter from the D-01 is located immediately next to the capsule. With a dynamic range far exceeding that of the capsule, the converter allows optimal utilisation of the capsule qualities. This ensures that the capsule signal is made available to the recording system with no coloration, and with a hitherto unknown transparency.

If required, the DSP functions integrated into the microphone can be configured and controlled remotely via the DMI-2 digital microphone interface and the RCS remote control software. These functions include gain setting, a compressor/limiter with a supplementary de-esser function, and a peak limiter. The digital concept can prove particularly advantageous here. The peak limiter situated in close proximity to the capsule allows safe exploitation of the entire available dynamic range even in stressful recording situations.

Two versions of the new digital miniature microphones are available: Classic nickel, and black Nextel finish. All standard sampling frequencies, from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz, are supported.

In addition to the possibility of connecting via the DMI-2 digital microphone interface, now also available in an updated version (see below), Neumann is now offering attractively priced "Connection Kits" to permit easy connection of individual miniature microphones to the widely used S/PDIF and AES/EBU interfaces. This makes it possible for users to enjoy "Neumann sound direct to disc" without the comprehensive functionality of the sophisticated DMI-2. An upgrade to the DMI-2, with its configuration capabilities and DSP functions, is of course possible at any time. A plug-in power supply is included as a standard feature. In addition, a Battery Pack to permit outdoor operation is available as an option.

Two Neumann starter sets offer a straightforward introduction to digital microphone technology. They include a KM 184 D microphone and a Connection Kit for an S/PDIF or AES/EBU connection. An interesting aspect for those planning an initial purchase of budget-oriented recording equipment is that an A/D converter is already integrated into the digital Neumann system, and that a preamp is no longer required.

In addition to discreet visual enhancement, the DMI-2 digital microphone interface has been updated with functional additions and improvements. For example: Support for the 192 kHz sampling rate; AES 11 synchronization capability; greatly improved jitter performance.

A key feature of the DMI-2 of course continues to be data exchange with the microphone in accordance with the AES 42 standard, and the supply of the data stream from the microphone in AES/EBU format.

Wolfgang Fraissinet, president of marketing/sales of Neumann Berlin, says: "While the TLM 49 released in April combines modernity and tradition, with its new digital miniature microphone series, Neumann is pursuing a path of technological development resolutely directed toward the future."
