You know you’re at a West Coast AES Convention when you’re standing in a rooftop bar at sunset, surrounded by skyscrapers, and listening to Sheryl Crow-alike Dana Glover singing through Audio-Technica’s Artist Elite microphones. QSC Audio began by reinventing itself. OK, the new logo is "a relatively small change in terms of effort," but, said CEO Barry Andrews, "it’s an important one symbolically and technically. It signifies the transformation of our company from an amplifier specialist to an integrated systems supplier."

‘Integrated systems’ in this case means QSC products in signal processing, network audio transport, control systems, loudspeakers and - not least - amplifiers.

Entec Sound supplied equipment and crew to Morrissey's recent high profile, sold-out UK tour. This was the first time Entec has serviced Morrissey - former frontman of 80s band The Smiths -a contract which they won through a competitive tender process. However, FOH engineer Phil Griggs and Entec's head of sound Dick Hayes have known each other for many years in the industry.

The d&b 12-stack C4 rig, with four B2 subs, achieved great sonic results throughout the tour, in a wide variety of venues. Monitors were mixed by Vince Buller, who also production managed, and the system was crew chiefed by Entec's Tristan Johnson, joined by his team-mate Adam Draper (and Liam Halpin at Brixton). Because of the nature, message and meaning of Morrissey's often intense lyrics, it's always imperative that his voice is always high and clear above the mix.

Allen & Heath has announced the first release of iDR System Manager software for its iDR series, a new DSP audio system for installed and live sound. The software is available for free download from the Allen & Heath website (address below). iDR System Manager runs on a Windows PC and allows installers to create customized, integrated audio systems using iDR series hardware units. PC connection can be direct to an iDR-8 or remotely across a network or via a modem. Once a software configuration is complete it can be saved to an iDR-8 audio mix processor and the PC can be removed, leaving the iDR system to run as a standalone entity.

Noise Productions, one of New Zealand’s leading sound production houses, has acquired a new modular outdoor concert system from Proel, consisting of 32 TPR12A individually powered 12" and horn speakers, which combine to produce a system scalable from 600W to 10,000W. "This is the first time modular technology has been used for small to medium-sized concert systems in this country," said the company’s’s managing director Toby Mills.

The new Sheraton Hotel on the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora has just completed the installation of 60 JBL Control Contractor Series speakers. The picturesque, five-star resort features a total of 120 rooms, 70 of which are private, over-water bungalows. The hotel needed a sound system for ambient music throughout the entire resort, including the reception area, hotel restaurant, beachside restaurant grill and banquet room.

The technical team of Total Video Distribution, the JBL distributor in French Polynesia, collaborated with an architect to design the system. A total of 50 Control 25T surface-mount speakers and 10 Control 26CT ceiling speakers were installed on the property. Midas has reported record console sales in the UK since the decision to bring UK distribution back to the factory. Since the announcement at the PLASA Show in September, Midas has delivered eight consoles in the UK: Birmingham sales and rental company SSE took an XL4 and two Heritage 3000s to add to their hire stock, Skan PA also took an XL4, while Adlib Audio and Tourtech both took a Heritage 3000. Cheshire-based Lighting and Sound Services are now the proud owners of a Legend 3000, as is Atomic Sound in Newark.

The coach, a Scania Irizar, is owned by Wolverhampton-based Price Travel and leased to Division One team Wolves, who use it for all their away games, reserves and youth matches.

In its ‘down’ time, Price Travel utilizes the bus for a variety of other VIP and sporting events - including the Ryder Cup. The bus recently underwent a total refit, for which Price wanted the sound system updated, and a state-of-the-art personal entertainment system installed onboard. Philip Van Loo’s Bruges-based company, PVL Sound & Light, has purchased a second 40-channel Soundcraft MH4 desk to add to the one they acquired earlier in the year. The company has purchased no fewer than nine desks in the past year to service work in the Flemish-speaking part of Belgium.

The 20-year-old sales and concert touring specialist had desperately needed a new touring desk, having sold two Soundcraft Series 5 consoles recently to the new concert hall in Bruges. Van Loo took the compact option. "The Series 5 was a little bulky for the scale of theatres we do. I was looking for a desk with the same facilities but with lower weight and dimensions. The MH4 is a perfect solution."

ARX Systems has awarded its Australian distributor, The Resource Corporation P/L, the award for ‘Asia Pacific Distributor of the Year for 2002’ after the company achieved an increase in ARX sales of 225% for the 2001/2002 fiscal year.

Tony Hosking, managing director of TRC, attributes a large part of the increase in sales to their success with ARX's ZA Series of multi-channel amplifiers - especially into museum, theme park and law court installation markets - and the SPL range of powered poudspeakers. In recent years, Duran Audio have seen a growing market demand for high power digital directivity controlled (DDC) loudspeaker columns, such as the Intellivox 1608. The 1608 was the first ‘full range’ Intellivox, with previous units being better suited to vocal reinforcement. It continues to amaze engineers, say Duran, many finding it difficult to accept that what looks like an old-fashioned column loudspeaker can offer such transparent musical reproduction at high SPLs. Applications for the 1608 have ranged from speech reinforcement, live music in theatrical shows, corporate events and classical music concerts, and in acoustic environments such as churches, sports halls and factory buildings. The Intellivox 1608 has even served as a mobile touring system!

The Marquee Club, one of London’s most high profile live music venues, has re-opened at a new location in Islington, North London. After a £4 million fit-out, the club has been transformed into a 1,200-capacity club/live music and entertainment venue. The Marquee brand is now owned by former Eurythmics star Dave Stewart of the Artist Network, and entrepreneur Mark Fuller.

The lighting and visual elements for the new Marquee have been designed and co-ordinated by Dan Cook, who vacated his post as technical manager of the Ocean Music Centre in Hackney to take up the role of lighting manager. Cook designed a flexible lighting rig to cater for a diverse range of artists.

This year’s MOBO awards recognized both new and established artists, from Miss Dynamite and Nora Jones, to the longer-toothed Jimmy Cliff and Chaka Kahn. The production team were closer to the latter in years, but they helped this year’s awards ‘Kick Ass’, as a star-studded occasion.

The atmosphere was more like that of a gig than an awards ceremony, due in large part, to its tight production and planning. The show itself changed format considerably this year, with the guests having dinner before the show in a separate draped area before moving into the main auditorium for the awards.

The event’s production manager, Mick Kluczynski, of MJK Productions, expanded: "We changed the layout in order to keep the show fresh. I brought together my regular team of suppliers, who make a consistent and professional team for the big awards shows I run each year.

The sixth annual New Horizon event on the campus of Coleraine University attracted over 20,000 visitors to the Christian-based Gospel presentation over a seven-day period. For the second year running, the sound was produced by local company Light & Sound FX (LSFX).

For the main tented area, LSFX used four stacks of Mackie Fussion, two each side of the stage configured in four Fussion 3000 mid/high boxes, four 1800 subs and four 1800A subs, all driven by Mackie M1400 amps. For the stage monitoring, Mackie C300 speakers and a Mackie SR40:8 mixer were spec’d. Around the rest of the site were 14 Mackie SRM 450s, whilst for the FOH mix, LSFX used the Crest VCA 32:4 FOH console.

The 96-channel console, which was delivered by DiGiCo's sales director James Gordon to Autograph in early November, will become the first D5 in the world to be fitted with the forthcoming D5 Theatre package. The theatre software will include an enlarged output matrix and a host of other features that are specific to the theatre environment.

The whole slickly formulated Pop Idol phenomenon is the popular culture movement of the moment. With Will and Gareth topping the UK charts, the live Pop Idol concept is now flying high in the US with a30-date American Idol tour, produced by Simon Fuller and 19 Management, with production handled by Chris Vaughan’s CV Productions.

The show is a superlative example of high production values, with Chris Vaughan’s CV Productions team featuring many who made the first Pop Idol tour gel. With 12 trucks and 24 sold-out UK arena dates, this is some achievement in these politically jittery times.

Leading Norwegian rental company AVAB has completed a sold-out world tour with a-ha using a Meyer Sound line array PA system driven by XTA digital signal processing. Destinations on a-ha’s Lifelines tour included Europe, Russia and Brazil. They played to audiences as large as 30,000 in Riga, Latvia and 24,000 in Norway, and ended in the UK, including a date at Wembley Arena.

AVAB co-owner and senior technical director Sven Persson explains: "They came back from the cold, played a comeback tour in Germany, and haven’t looked back since. When we started work on this tour we did a lot of work in pre-production to make the show as good as possible, and it’s just been going up and up."

Bournemouth-based CPS Group supplied a substantial Renkus-Heinz sound reinforcement system for a one-off performance of Cameron Mackintosh’s Les Miserables in the Windsor Hall of Bournemouth’s International Centre as part of its UK tour. Staged in association with Bournemouth’s Orchestras by Wing & A Prayer Theatrical Productions under licence from Cameron Mackintosh Overseas, the evening was a resounding success.

Sound designers Chris Caton and Richard Colegate from CPS specified the R-H system. Colegate explains: "We chose the R-H system as it enabled us to provide West End style sound in a large multi-purpose room with a very challenging, hard acoustic environment."

Linking experts in the fields of music, electronic engineering and computer science, the forum will aim to create a community which will be at the forefront of the very latest research in the rapidly growing field of digital music and its related technologies - including the creation, coding, distribution and delivery of musical audio. The network also hopes to act as a liaison point with the commercial music industry and music publishers.
