Dallas-based sound reinforcement company Gemini Sound Inc (GSI) has purchased an entirely new sound system to accommodate Usher’s current Evolution tour. As part of the setup, GSI owner Tim Cain chose to acquire a hefty total of 99 Crown Macro-Tech amplifiers, mostly made up of Crown’s highest-powered MA-5002VZ models.

The MA-5002VZs are primarily called upon to drive the tour’s house system, which is comprised of 60 EAW KF760 Series line array loudspeakers and 44 BH760 subs. MA-5002VZs also power a total of 13 KF761 systems used as side- and front-fills, as well as 16 sub enclosures on stage. Additionally, six MA-36x12s are being used to power EAW SM84 stage wedges for the band, while 16 Crown MA-2402s and four MA-1202s are on hand for various other amplification needs. Notably, the MA-36x12s are all equipped with Crown’s IQ-PIP-USP2 modules, which provi

XTA digital signal processing is featured throughout the audio installation for the Queen-inspired musical We Will Rock You at London’s Dominion Theatre. The system, created by leading theatre sound designer Bobby Aitken, has to capture the power and verve of Queen’s music, with the pristine sound quality that contemporary theatre musical-goers expect. A broad-based audience, from die-hard Queen fans to children and older people, watches the show. Says Aitken: "A balance had to be struck as with all such shows - on the one hand, keeping the Queen fans happy with a big, dynamic sounding show, but with responsibility for the younger and older members of the audience."

Heading the list of sound sources is a nine-piece band including four keyboards, two guitarists, bass, drums and percussion, 30 Sennheiser radio and hand-held microphones and DPA boom mics. A wi

Symetrix has introduced SymNet Designer v1.2, which incorporates automatic mic mixers with master and slave modules in a 4, 8 and 16-channel configuration, as well as room combining modules for up to 16 rooms, with and without automatic mic mixing. These two highly requested features have been added in order to make the SymNet Audio Matrix system more versatile in a larger variety of applications. Another upgrade in SymNet Designer v1.2 is ARC-PS - a 1U rack-mountable power supply for up to 10 ARCs. The ARC-PS distributes power and control data via Cat 5 cable through 10 discrete outputs, or in daisy-chain combinations.

Two new add-ons to the SymNet line include BreakIn12 and BreakOut12. These products provide a cost-effective solution for extending the input and output capability of a SymNet system. Since they contain no on-board DSP, BreakIn12 and BreakOut12 are intended for use in s

The new series of Big Brother on Channel 4 is having its sound mix performed on the first Soundcraft MH4 to be deployed out in the field. Supplied by Showcom Audio to Event Technical Support, the desk forms part of a rental package to Roll To Record. The 48 + 4 frame, fitted with eight stereo channels, has gone into Elstree Studios and will remain there for three months, during which time it will be used by a number of sound engineers under the direction of Oliver France. It is backed up by a newly-purchased 48-channel Soundcraft K2, which is acting as a secondary desk.

Co-owned by Malcolm Whittall and John Hooker, Event Technical Support had been seeking a multi-function, highly-specified console, and the arrival of the MH4 meant that they could meet the performance criteria - inside their budget. Already Soundcraft owners, the company previously supplied PA equipment for live audienc

Lars Wern and his production team from DM Audio in Stockholm produced some inspired sound mapping, using a digital highway and proprietary audio tools, when the new Saku Suurhall in the Estonian capital of Tallinn hosted the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest on May 25. The audience of 6,000 were treated to the first major European installation of the Martin Audio Wavefront Line Array (W8L) - 24 enclosures clustered in rows of six, either side of the stage. This headed an all-digital design, in which DM ran QSC QSControl software and RAVE (Routing Audio Via Ethernet) on a CobraNet network to send audio signals and effect remote control of the Powerlight PL4.0 and PL6.0 amplifiers. The eight audio signals - to the low, mid and high sections of the loudspeakers, both left and right, plus the audience sidefills - were transmitted down just two power cables.

The Lebanese city of Batroun, approximately 25km north of Beirut, has been enriched by another attraction, ‘Void’ - a 700-capacity club which is one of the largest and most modern discotheques in the region. In only a few months, the owners, brothers Joseph and George Nader, converted an old cinema into an exclusive nightclub. At the centre of ‘Void’, which occupies two floors, a large, round bar made of steel visually dominates the ground floor. The floor above is balconied so that guests on the upper floor can watch the dancers below. On the upper floor are two further bars, as well as additional seating. The upper dance floor is in fact the rooftop of the round bar. Sound design and installation were provided by Lebanese HK Audio partner, Backstage Music, with Camiel Geagea primarily responsible.

For the main dance floor, six LP 118 1x18" direct-loaded s

Mackie Designs Inc has launched a new division - Mackie Broadcast Professional - dedicated to serving the needs of the expanding broadcast/post production market. The announcement comes on the back of the recent integration of Soundscape International, following Mackie’s acquisition of Sydec BV, a company with a strong reputation in the fields of broadcasting and post production. Mackie believes it will put them in pole position in this competitive market and further enlarge their customer base. The company has long acknowledged that the world of broadcast, post production and pro-audio have particular needs and issues that differ from those of Mackie’s traditional studio market, and so justify a specialist team to serve them.

More than 40 eminent theatre sound designers from all over the globe will be gathering in mid-June for the London Theatre Sound Design Colloquium, to discuss the artistic underpinnings of sound design and its rapidly increasing importance in modern theatre production. "Few people outside of the profession understand the unique combination of technical expertise and creative artistry required to conceptualize, realize and execute a quality sound design. Theatre sound design is, or should be, on a par professionally and artistically with the other creative design disciplines," says Ross Brown, sound designer, Sound Design Tutor at The Central School of Speech and Drama and lead organizer of the Colloquium. "This is the first time that an international group of professional sound designers will assemble to discuss these important issues."

You may have read about 1 Limited’s multi-channel sound technology that produces up to eight channels of surround sound from a single loudspeaker in the April issue of L&SI - well now, you can actually see it, because the first product to embody this technology will be on show at the Cedia UK Expo 2002 (taking place in Brighton next week).

According to the company, unlike virtual surround systems, which employ psycho-acoustic techniques to simulate a surround sound effect, the Digital Sound Projector (dSP) produces genuine surround sound from a single loudspeaker. Using patented digital technology, derived from research in the fields of SONAR and RADAR design, the Digital Sound Projector produces multiple steerable sound beams that are ‘bounced’ off the walls and ceiling towards the listening area. The current version of the Digital Sound Projector uses 254 tiny, ind
