Denmark - City Kirken in Arhus has undergone a major refurbishment. One of the church members Peter Rasch reports, "The church completely renovated the building within which it lives. The main worship room was always intended to bring a fresh modern feel and the church members all agreed that we should employ the equally modern technologies of communication, sound, light and video, but with sensitivity. This is not the place for Iron Maiden, but it is a place where people should be excited by what they see and hear."

The Church Committee sought Rasch's advice, "My career has been in providing audio and communications systems. I worked with Informations Teknik in Copenhagen for some years, and now work with Get Visual, a specialist with particular expertise in video in my home town of Arhus. Germany - Running from 5-8 August, this year saw the second edition of the Burghauser Konzertsommer mini-festival, featuring four evenings, four genres, and the backdrop of Burghausen Castle. With acclaimed performances by jazz star Roger Cicero and his band, Austrian bard Peter Cornelius, German Volksmusik charmer Hansi Hinterseer, and the similarly well-received Night of Musicals gala, it was a formula that proved successful once again this year. Despite the wet and cold weather, organizers Creative Concerts were welcomed 5,000 visitors.

This year as last, the festival's sound production was the responsibility of a team from rental company MSE Tontechnik. As well as the variety of the acts performing, the medieval venue - a 60 x 20m courtyard - also posed challenges for the crew of technicians. "It's no easy matter here," commented MSE chief Johannes Sch

Belgium - The Vlaamse Opera is an opera company based in Flanders with two venues: one in Antwerp and one in Ghent. The theatre in Antwerp is an amphitheatre, semi-circular in shape; it seats 1,180 people. It takes its cue from classical mythology, the ceiling painting in the auditorium depicts Rhythmus, one of the basic principles of all music: a man surrounded by nine female Muses.

During recent refurbishments, between 2004 and 2007, a completely new ventilation system was installed, the chairs on the ground floor and first floor were replaced, and on other floors they were repaired and the walls were painted in a different colour. The theatre was partially re-equipped with some new audio and video elements, and an Ethernet ring added, as well as new loudspeaker and light cabling. However no changes were made to the acoustics and no new public address installation was planned.

Europe - Faithless have been on tour since early this year, playing in clubs, theatres and on the summer festival scene across Europe. Throughout, the band's monitor engineer Ben Milton has been relying on the DiGiCo SD8.

MIlton has been using DiGiCo consoles since the company started in 2002, when friend and prolific theatre sound designer Bobby Aitken introduced him to the brand.

"I have been specifying DiGiCo consoles when I can ever since," says Milton. "When I was putting together the monitor spec for Faithless, I wanted to use the best sounding console with the smallest footprint. We were starting the tour in European theatres, some of which have very limited space onstage - the Paradiso in Amsterdam springs to mind - so it was crucial that I kept my footprint small and flexible."

Milton has seven wedge mixes on stage and eight stereo in-ears, and t
