Portugal - The new Aquapura Douro Valley 5-star Hotel is immersed in the Port wine vineyards of Douro, Portugal, and all 50 rooms, in this converted 19th-century manor house, boast river and vineyard views.

One of the resort's most renowned features is its impressive spa with indoor heated pools, 10 treatment rooms, gym and thermal suite, while other features include outdoor heated swimming pools, heated plunge pools on the villas, library, tennis, Wi-Fi and a business centre, as well as a selection of bars and restaurants.

Harman Pro's Portuguese distributors Custodio Cardoso Pereira (CCP) were awarded the contract to supply an integrated sound system, which could be networked using Soundweb London DSP devices from BSS Audio.

Design consultant on the project was Roland Hemming, with Miguel Mendes managing the project for Passion of Music (PoM). Installation contractors were P&C and Videovisão.

Using the reconfigurable and flexible I/O properties of some 30 Soundweb London devices Hemming divided the complex into 48 zones "although for operational purposes we scaled this down to more like 20 zones," he said.

He also specified all the cabling, running gigabit fibre between two rack locations and using HP ProCurve switches to manage the networks.

Five channels of background music are fed from a server to different locations, along with AKG microphones in a number of public areas and two paging mics.

"BSS Audio's HiQnet London Architect software offered a simple and flexible way of programming up the system," said Hemming, "and allowed us to do everything we wanted."

The designer specified three BLU-80 devices (one configured 4-in/12-out and the others 16-out), along with three similarly configured BLU-32 I/O expander devices. For the local management he supplied four Soundweb BLU-10 touch-screen wall remotes, three BLU-6 and 17 BLU-3 wall panels - simple controllers which allow the designer to provide level control and source or preset selection.

Soundweb runs an analogue feed into the nine Crown CTs 4200 and 8200 multi-channel amplifiers, which power a selection of JBL Control Contractor Series 100V line loudspeakers (mainly recessed Control 24CT micro and Control 26CT ceiling speakers), as well as Control 19s and Control 23s, custom-painted to match the décor.

"The brief was that the loudspeakers needed to be discreet, and we achieved that, with a very high standard of finish," said Hemming.
