"We wanted to create a followspot with similar physical dimensions to a 1.2K followspot but with a light out put closer to a 2.5K unit," stated Francois Juliat during the presentation.

They succeeded with the Victor 1.8K MSR, working closely with Philips who produced the 1.8K lamp exclusively for Robert Juliat. The Victor has the same dimensions as their award winning 1.2K Super Korrigan but offers an increase in light out-put of up to 50%.

UK - 5th September saw DiGiCo unveil its concept of the future, the SD7, in front of 120 of its distributors, sound engineers, designers and rental companies who were invited to an exclusive party held at London's Tower Bridge. The company then unveiled the SD7 in front of members of the pro audio press on the opening day of the PLASA Show in London.

The SD7 is based around a new technology developed at DiGiCo, called "Stealth digital processing", and could ultimately bring a whole new dimension to digital mixing, the company says.

"The party was mainly to celebrate our MBO," says DiGiCo marketing director David Webster. "But it also gave us the chance to let our guests have a sneak preview of what we're working towards. The SD7 is purely a concept, but who knows what the real possibilities could be."

UK - Fuzion and Coemar aim to strengthen their support for lighting designers with a complimentary portfolio of their creative work.

The new partnership of Italian manufacturer Coemar and its new UK distributor Fuzion was announced in March 2007. Both companies want to recognise the importance of the lighting designer and offer ways to help them promote their craft.

A hand-made Portfolio using 'state of the art' book printed on metallic paper - which produces extremely vibrant colours and a sharp image - bound with a contemporary metal satin cover, presents the LD's show photography in a professional and eye-catching way. Smaller books are available to give to potential and existing clients.

UK - QSC Audio has confirmed the appointment of Shure Distribution GmbH as its new distributor in Germany; this is one of several new territorial appointments announced by the company to coincide with PLASA 2007 in London, as it looks to streamline and consolidate its position in the global marketplace. UK - British loudspeaker design pioneer Tony Andrews last night became the first recipient of the newly-created Gottelier Award, named in memory of Tony Gottelier, the leading designer, innovator and industry commentator who died in 2006.

The Gottelier Award was inaugurated this year to recognise an individual or team who, over the years, has made a significant and sustained contribution to the advancement of entertainment, presentation or installation technology - whether in audio, lighting, rigging, staging or any other related field.

Following nominations from across all sectors, four industry pioneers were shortlisted - Tony Andrews (Funktion One), Richard Belliveau (High End Systems), Adam Bennette (ETC) and Wayne Howell (Artistic Licence). The winner was decided through an open online vote on the PLASA website.

Spain - An Avolites Diamond 4 console controlled all main stage lighting for the 9-day Aste Nagusia 2007 Festival in Bilbao, northern Spain - which saw up to 15,000 people a night enjoy an eclectic line up of bands from The Pogues to Spanish superstars Dover and Miguel Bose.

Technical production for the event was supplied by Bilbao-based Audiomic, who took care of lighting, sound, video and rigging. The Diamond 4 was specified by lighting crew chief Urko Arruza who also produced the generic stage lighting design which was programmed and operated by Alex Ampudia.

The console was chosen for its power, flexibility, easy programming and because it was also likely to be familiar to guest lighting designers, explains Arruza, "Basically it is the perfect desk for a festival set up like this" he says.

UK - Robert Juliat benefited from perhaps one of the biggest projection surfaces at the exhibition, placed as they were on the front of the White Light zone with the entire entrance wall of Earls Court 2 in front of them. This suited the collection of followspots and fixtures on displayed, especially long throw Lancelot and Victor followspots.

The Victor was successfully launched at the show yesterday whilst the Lancelot was running the first DMX operated modules of the NORIA 6-way gobo wheels and CHRO-MIX colour mixing system. These DMX versions are now in full production and confirm the Lancelot's position, not only as an exceptional long throw followspot, but as the most powerful effects projector.

UK - Wednesday saw the appearance of some mysterious Black Holes on the Goboland stand! Etched out of black coated steel, the Goboland Black Hole is a high-tech 'donut' which sharpens gobo projection by removing excess light and lengthening depth of field. The blackened surface also helps reduce reflections.

"The development of our new black steel process was perfect for a product such as the Black Hole as its non-reflective coating does not exacerbate reflection problems as previous products have done in the past," explains Goboland Consultant, Wyatt Enever.

The Black Hole is marked with pop-out segments - graded in exact photographic f-stops - to enable accurate manipulation of light output, reducing glare by between 6% and 50%. The resulting lengthened depth of field makes it easier to sharpen an image across its full diameter even when projected at an angle. This

USA - The 2007 Worldwide Partner Conference, better known as WPC07, a computer industry gathering, took place in Denver, Colorado in July. 12 Martin Maxedia digital media servers were used to provide digital content to a remarkable 36 plasma screens, two LED curtains and centre LED Wall.

"We used a Matrix Preview monitor so that I could preview all outputs during programming, rehearsals and show," commented Thomas Walls, Maxedia and Maxxyz programmer at Stardust Productions. "The networking was a godsend. I was given custom content what seemed like every hour or so and with 12 servers online, the networking made my life a breeze."

When all was said and done, approximately 68 gigabits of custom content was used on the show. Mike Amelang of Flying Spot created custom content on-site which Walls immediately loaded into the Maxedia systems. Several other types

USA - Open to university and college students nationwide, the registration for Shure's fourth Fantastic Scholastic recording competition has opened and will remain open until 19 October, 2007. A random drawing on 25 October 2007 will determine the 10 competing schools, each of which will receive a standardised 'mic locker' from Shure that must be utilised to complete every recording project submitted.

The names of registrants chosen as contestants in the random drawing will be posted on Shure's website on 29 October. Dedicated mic lockers will be sent out the same day, and must be returned no later than 11 February 2008. Announcement of the Grand Prize winner will take place on 10 May, 2008.

USA - Houston's Bare Necessity won the second Houston Texans-sponsored Battle of the Bands competition, held annually to find a house band to entertain pre-game tailgaters on Budweiser Plaza, right outside the entrance to Reliant Park. J&S Audio Visual (Houston, Texas) provide sound reinforcement and production for the stage with a PA including Electro-Voice Plasma powered monitors and a Midas Venice 320 mixing console.

UK - The Swansea Bay Summer Festival is one of the UK's biggest carnival events watched by crowds of over 35,000. Celebrating 200 years since the abolition of slavery, this multi-cultural event builds to a crescendo of samba drums and high energy street dance with the City Streets - Summer Beats concert held on the 26 August.

Total Sound Solutions turned to Harman Pro for the sound system. Company director, Chris Hooke chose a JBL VerTec VT4887 compact line array set-up for the job. The free community-wide pep rally kicked-off the 2007 UT home football season. Festivities featured performances by Bandit's own public relations manager, Kimberly Ainge in addition to Waycross and Jason D. Williams. Tennessee head football coach, Phillip Fulmer and select members of the Tennessee football team also participated with the Pride of the Southland Marching Band, UT cheerleaders and Smokey.

Dubai - Following the appointment of PALME Middle East exhibition director, Alexander Heuff, show organisers IIR Exhibitions Entertainment & Installation Technology Group have announced the arrival of Neil Hickman as group exhibitions director. Most recently he has spent four years as director of the Cityscape series of events, based in Dubai.

Commenting on the continuing potential for sound and vision integrators in the region, Hickman said, "The boom in hotel build and future tourism attractions shows no sign of letting up - new projects are being announced on an almost daily basis. As a result, the professional sound, light, music, audio visual and systems integration industries are expected to quadruple in the next three years as a result of opportunities in both the commercial and residential sectors."

UK - HSL supplied and co-ordinated lighting and sound production and 40 crew covering all 10 arenas at Creamfields 2007 for producers Loudsound Events. This, the largest Creamfields event to date featured a host of international DJ's and bands including main stage double headliners Groove Armada and the Chemical Brothers, and was the second at their new site in Daresbury near Warrington.

It's the sixth year that HSL has supplied technical production to the UK's best-known dance event. They brought ML Executives onboard as their audio partners to deal with all-things sonic, and all departments worked closely with event production manager Lee Charteris.

HSL's on site co-ordinator was Ian Stevens, He collaborated with project manager Mike Oates who oversaw all the paperwork, advance logistics and prep.

UK - PLASA 07, the first PLASA Show managed in-house by PLASA Events, has been judged an 'outstanding success' by exhibitors and visitors alike - with a large number of this year's exhibitors already confirming their intention to return to the show in 2008. The show featured over 500 new product launches and attracted over 50 new exhibitors.

With the show floor packed on Monday morning, PLASA Events also announced its acquisition of the A.C. Lighting North trade show, bringing the PLASA Events' team's expertise and drive to this fast-growing event for the north of the UK.

UK - Le Maitre chose the recent PLASA Show in London to celebrate the company's 30th birthday. Company directors Rick Wilson and Karen Haddon were joined by members of the media and industry luminaries to help them celebrate their great achievement.

In a short address, Wilson gave praise to all those people, past and present, who had helped them on the way: "Le Maitre has benefited from a great deal of help from both the industry and the media," he said. Karen Haddon added: "It's hard to believe that from such small beginnings, Le Maitre is now such an established international brand."

UK - Recently formed Scattered Media has announced the launch of its second exhibition - evenTech Ireland 2008 which is scheduled for 18-19 November, 2008, at the RDS, Dublin.

Scattered Media's Darren Brechin says: "As with other regions, the scope of development in Ireland now presents the perfect opportunity for the evenTech Ireland forum and similarly, the event will give a well-timed boost to the Irish entertainment and installation technology industry."

The launch of evenTech Ireland 2008 closely follows the announcement of evenTech Scotland 2008 - scheduled for 20-21 February, 2008 at the Marriott Hotel, Glasgow.

UK - This year's winner of the Michael Northen Bursary, who received an honourable mention last year, is Georg Spindler who entered his lighting design for The Memory of Water, which formed part of the 2007 student show at LIPA.

Described by the judges as "creative in a very theatrical way, this was a beautifully documented and reasoned entry, with well presented sketches and photographs," the design won Spindler the £500 Bursary.

Presenting the award on 11 September at PLASA 07, Rick Fisher, chairman of the ALD, said: "There was definitely no 'favouritism' because this year, for the first time, the judges were not told the names of the entrants, so to us all the entries were anonymous."
