UK - The first details of this year's extended PLASA 2010 Education & Learning Programme have been unveiled by organisers PLASA Events. The acclaimed programme of free seminars and masterclasses includes top international speakers on industry projects and technologies, sustainability, AV and systems integration and much more.

Entitled Don't Just measure: Listen, the Masterclass will be an appreciation of the power of human perception and spatial awareness, and how they relate to audio - in particular, the fact that just because a piece of audio gear measures correctly does not necessarily mean it sounds good.

InfoComm International will host a seminar theatre dedicated to AV & Systems Integration. Topics over the dedi

UK - 5 Star Cases exhibited for the first time at the biennial Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) in Hampshire, UK, to boost its presence in the aerospace sector. FIA is an iconic global aviation event with a prominent position on the international aerospace calendar.

5 Star's booth was maximised with some creative space management, displaying many products as well as incorporating a small seating and hospitality area.

USA - From a musical duet, to a gravity-defying human puppet show, America's Got Talent showcases it all. Behind the scenes, lighting designer Kieran Healy is tasked with creating a design that can not only handle such a variance in performances, but also support the live HD broadcast. To do this, Healy relies on automated fixtures from Philips Vari-Lite, including 24 VLX Wash luminaires provided by PRG.

"On this show, you have to be prepared for anything and everything," says Healy. "Some performers will want fast and exciting, while others will want the lighting to be subtle so as not to distract those onstage. But no matter what, it has to look good on camera. This show definitely runs the full gamut of lighting."

He continues, "It mystifies me that lighting instruments keep getting brighter. Cameras are getting so good at picking up detail i

UK - The television show may have come to an end but the successful acts from 2010's Britain's Got Talent took to the country's local stages in a tightly scheduled tour taking in 17 city venues in a month. Dave Farmer of THC Design specified PixelRange, supplied by Port Talbot-based Sonalyst.

Farmer explains the choice, "The touring schedule was very tight so fixtures needed to be reliable, have numerous functions, offer the maximum creative options and work as we expect, as time to redesign the fixture layout or replace defective units simply wasn't available. Small footprint was essential for the applications involved and we needed power and saturation too."

Farmer's deputy LD, Niall Hannell, adds, "PixelRange is just so reliable, they've been around for a while, they're proven, they work, and they always work - I've never seen one go wrong, I've never

The COLORdash Accent family features seven high-power, 1-watt LEDs. Their cast aluminum housing helps dissipate heat. Its compact size, measuring 174 mm x 108 mm and weighing 0.6 kg, makes them discreet enough to be mounted almost anywhere or fit any decor, says the company. The fixtures' on-boa

UK - Showsec implemented a balance of maintaining safety and security with a very customer focused operation for festival organisers Rob da Bank and John Hughes along with the Loud Sound production team to deliver a successful, family friendly, Camp Bestival 2010.

Southern regional manager Steve Reynolds reports, "Customer care was a high priority for everyone. We worked with all stakeholders to create a plan and briefed staff very thoroughly in that area. It was imperative we create a relaxed and safe environment for the 25,000 capacity crowd from the moment they arrived on site. Parents with small children had travelled for hours in warm cars, so all staff were encouraged to welcome guests courteously, familiarise themselves with all key locations for giving directions and to be patient at all times."

UK - If you are an acoustic consultant, facilities manager, architect or anyone involved in the manufacture, specification or installation of voice alarm systems, you will have heard of EN54 part 16, the new European standard covering voice alarm systems, including control and indicating equipment (VACIE), along with amplifiers, processors and similar hardware, and EN54 Part 24, which covers loudspeakers.

Its introduction is causing headaches - and considerable expense - for the UK and European manufacturing sector. The UK is one of only three of the EU's 27 member states where EN54 is yet to become law, but that will change in April 2011.

The complexity of the EN54 regulations, and the demands it places on manufacturers for testing, are onerous, especially in systems incorporating equipment from different manufacturers.

UK - The new i-Pix 2x2 LED fixtures made a major impact at the 2010 Global Gathering dance extravaganza staged at Long Marsden Airfield, Warwickshire.

They were used by the event's production lighting and video designers Philip Winward and Nick Jevons of Electric Fly Productions to illuminate the stage and dancefloor in the VIP tent, and to illuminate the Live Terrace area.

It was the first time that they have had the chance to use this latest i-Pix product, which was launched 'live' at Glastonbury just a few weeks earlier, but Jevons liked the BB 2x2s so much that he even rigged two in the main stage front-of-house mixer area - from where he was operating the lighting for the two-day event. This made it look pretty and exude a warm, inviting ambience to all entering 'lighting world' at the back of the enclosure.

Says Jevons, "i-Pix has always supported us ever s

Germany - A total of around 32,000 people attended the five sold-out concerts that comprised the 19th edition of the Classic Open Air event in Berlin from 15-19 July 2010. The first night was inaugurated by German TV personality, Herbert Feuerstein, who hosted a spectacular 'musical request' night complete with lights, lasers and fireworks.

The following evenings were filled with Verdi and Tchaikovsky performed by some of the biggest names in classical music, as well as a swing night. The event culminated with The big night of film music performed by Mousse T. and his band and the Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg. TSE AG of Berlin was once again responsible for the sound production, and this year they selected two Eclipse consoles from Innovason to handle FoH and monitoring duties.

Martin Kaiser, technical director for Classic Open Air Berlin, explained

UK - XL Video supplied video production for a series of shows in London's Hyde Park this summer spanning the three-day Hard Rock Calling and Wireless festivals, with a Kings of Leon show in the middle, all promoted by Live Nation.

It was the eighth year that XL has supplied these central London events, which were once again project managed for them by Chris Saunders, working with an XL crew of 15.

The headline acts for Hard Rock Calling were a blend of classic rock genres represented by Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney. XL supplied a five-camera PPU 'house' IMAG system which was directed by Ruary MacPhie using a GV Kayak, and this stayed in place for the whole run of shows.

The cameras were positioned two at FOH with long lenses, two in the pit on track-and-dolly and the fifth mounted on a remote pan/tilt head above the stage, all of which com

UK - The early part of 2010 saw part of one of London's busiest thoroughfares, Oxford Street, transformed into the age when dinosaurs ruled the earth, as Dinosaurs Unleashed delighted young and old alike. A key part of the exhibition is a prehistoric aquarium, which has come to life thanks to Adtec media players supplied by UK distributor Pixels.

So successful were the Dinosaurs' appearance in the Capital that the exhibition has now headed for the South West and Bournemouth which is, appropriately, the gateway to Britain's only natural World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast.

Dinosaurs Unleashed features life-size animatronic versions of the land-living Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, Triceratops and many others. One of the key features is, however, a virtual prehistoric aquarium, where marine reptiles like plesiosaurs and cephalopods such as ammonite
