Following a second hectic day at PLASA London 2013, a packed audience gathered yesterday evening in the AudioLab Arena to congratulate the winners of the PLASA Awards for Innovation, sponsored by Lighting & Sound International magazine. The winner of the prestigious Gottelier Award was also announced at the ceremony.

The PLASA Awards for Innovation recognise products that advance the industry by demonstrating a new style of thinking, improving technical practice or taking a key step forward in terms of safety. During the show's opening two days, 45 new products were judged 'live' by an independent panel of expert judges who toured the show floor to view each product presentation.

Eight awards of equal standing were presented, as well as the PLASA Award for Sustainability, to the following winners:

Record Sales - Tickets for next year's Glastonbury Festival have sold out in record time, according to organisers. Michael and Emily Eavis issued a joint statement confirming all 120,000 remaining tickets had been sold in just one hour and 27 minutes. They said they were "blown away" by the numbers logging on and were "genuinely sorry" that so many had missed out. Ticketing website See Tickets had earlier apologised to customers on Twitter for "technical difficulties". The site, which had been managing the sale of tickets for Glastonbury, wrote that the issues had led to "a very difficult half an hour" before the site stabilised, later adding that it was selling 3,000 tickets a minute.

Prices for the 2014 event had been increased by £10 to £210, plus a booking fee, but festival-goers could pay a deposit of £50 before sett

Germany - As the largest football stadium in the German Bundesliga, with a capacity of over 80,000, Signal Iduna Park - home of Borussia Dortmund (BVB) - recently sanctioned a radical upgrade to its public address system.

Their aim was to achieve higher intelligibility, even pattern control (with extended low frequency capability) and unobscured sightlines - but most importantly to link the voice evacuation and stand systems into a unified network, that could be monitored, error- and health-checked remotely. The solution was provided by RCF.

The deployment of 14 RCF clusters of 14 TTL33-A MKII line array elements (with a TTS26-A sub at the base of each), will future-proof the famous stadium for decades to come. But the most remarkable aspect is that this is an entirely active solution, wrapped around the beams to keep the sightlines intact.

Brazil - The 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup took place in Brazil, matching top football teams from around the globe. The event is staged by FIFA, the international football federation, in the host country for the following year's World Cup. The Confederations Cup brings together the world's top eight teams, one from each of FIFA's six geographical confederations, plus the host nation and reigning world champions. Each match was broadcast live to a global audience.

"This event was the perfect place to show how Shure's Axient wireless microphone system can help ensure success for any event," says Igor Del Ventura, Shure market development for Latin America. "We made arrangements with FIFA to use the system at several Cup matches, including the opening and closing ceremonies. The systems were used for live broadcast as well as Infotainment." UK - London's Royal Albert Hall continues to entertain and delight over 1.5m people every year with over 370 shows per year in the main auditorium in 2012 and close to 200 events in its secondary event spaces

Long-time audio suppliers to the Royal Albert Hall, Sound by Design won a highly competitive tender process, thus retaining their contract in September. As a result of this, the Royal Albert Hall and Sound by Design took the decision to completely renew its sound system. However, this time, the winning tender was with a new Halo Compact system from UK loudspeaker manufacturers, EM Acoustics.

Sound By Design's founder and MD Andy Callin said the principal reason for choosing Halo Compact over anything else was, "it's outstanding accuracy and coherency and an ability to maintain control of the dispersion over a distance of 50+ metres."

UK - PLASA secured a significant lobbying success last month when the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee published its report into 'Supporting the Creative Economy'. The Committee roundly endorsed PLASA's position regarding the Olympics 'No Marketing Rights Protocol'.

The report was the culmination of an inquiry which was launched just over a year ago with a call for evidence from the Committee, which is made up of MPs from across all political parties. PLASA made a detailed written submission as to how the creative industries can be better supported, with a particular emphasis on the value and importance of the Entertainment Technology sector. PLASA's evidence focussed on issues around allowing companies to promote their involvement in the Olympics, tax relief for apprenticeships, improving protection for intellectual property and helping SMEs in the sec

Belgium - The local council in the suburb of Brasschaat, north of Antwerp in Belgium, near the border with the Netherlands, has purchased a QSC Core 250i-based Q-Sys system with a TSC-3 touchscreen controller and QSC KLA line array loudspeakers as part of the audio system in the multi-purpose hall at the heart of its local cultural centre.

The hall and its raised stage is used for everything from public meetings to children's parties and concerts by local musicians. The staff that run the sound system in the hall are direct employees of the council and recommended the purchase of the Q-Sys system along with the KLA active line array system following a demo by the local QSC distributor, AED.

The sound system in the multipurpose hall is configured as a three-channel Left, Centre, Right (LCS) system. Two KLA12 elements are used per channel (for a total of six enclosures), and are

South Africa - St Mary's Diocesan School for Girls Kloof, KwaZula Natal, trickles with tradition and charm. This girls' school was established in 1906 and is well known for its musicals and drama pieces. DWR Distribution was pleased to install a lighting infrastructure in the school hall during the June / July holidays.

"Originally St Mary's wanted lighting solutions for three venues, namely, the school hall, a studio which is used as the drama practice room and an outdoor auditorium," explained Nick Barnes from DWR who headed the installation. Michael Broderick, a lighting specialist, consulted to ensure the correct equipment was specified. Due to pricing and budget constraints, it was decided to commence the project with the school hall only.

DWR took out the outdated lighting infrastructure and replaced this with two stage lighting bars, one FOH Lighting Bar, four

USA - More than 30 years after its founding, the Theatre for a New Audience finally has a new and permanent home at Polonsky Shakespeare Centre, an intimate and flexible courtyard theatre designed by Theatre Projects Consultants.

With a 22 October ribbon-cutting, the 299-seat theatre, situated at 262 Ashland Place, Brooklyn, proudly joined the burgeoning Brooklyn Cultural District. After more than 10 years of design and construction, the opening of the Samuel H. Scripps Mainstage at Theatre for a New Audience's Polonsky Shakespeare Centre marked the first theatre built in New York City for Shakespeare and classic drama since the Vivian Beaumont at Lincoln Centre in 1965.

Designed in partnership with H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture, Theatre Projects sought to create a venue thats structural flexibility would allow for maximum artistic flexibility. With an orchestra floor th

South Africa - Johannesburg-based Digital Fabric has specified Philips Selecon luminaires to help bring the newly completed //hapo museum to atmospheric and theatrical life.

//hapo's vision was clear: to create an interactive exhibition space where the story of Southern Africa, dating back 3.6 billion years, unfolds in an engaging narrative and visual form. The museum is split into a number of zones and scenes, each telling a different part of the African story. Lighting is used to evoke the feel and atmosphere of each scene presented.

Designed by a collaborative team of South African architects from Mashabane Rose, MMA and GAPP, Johannesburg based Gavin Olivier of Digital Fabric conceived and managed the technological aspects of the project. In the process he called on some of South Africa's leading integrators including: TDC Africa and DWR Distribution to deliver the lightin

Korea - Allen & Heath's Korean distributor, Sama ProSound Co., Ltd, recently installed a GLD-80 digital mixing system and ME-1 personal monitor mixer in Gunpo Sungjang Church in Gunpo-si near Seoul.

The church recently expanded, and decided to upgrade the sound system to digital from an old analogue system. Founded in 1984, the church contains a 1200 capacity main worship area with two floors and there is a sub-worship area and cafeteria.

Sama ProSound's brief was to install an easy to use and convenient digital mixer, so the company selected a GLD-80 digital mixer expanded with a AR2412 and two AR84 I/O racks, and with personal monitoring provided by five of the compatible ME-1 mixers, making Gunpo Sungjang Church the first church to install ME-1 in Korea.

"I first saw ME-1 at KOBA 2013, and it really impressed me. ME-1 meets all of my expectations as it is very easy t

USA - Avery Fisher Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Centre, has taken delivery of two DMX-controlled Robert Juliat Cyrano followspots from PRG/NJ. Avery Fisher Hall is part of The Lincoln Centre complex on the west side of Manhattan. The concert hall, which is used for a wide variety of events, opened in 1962 and has a capacity of 2,738 seats.

The Cyrano followspots replace aging fixtures. "The new Cyranos are the only followspots in the theatre," says Jason Marsh, associate director of production at Lincoln Centre. "We chose them for their exceptional quality and ease of use."

Marsh notes that productions in Avery Fisher Hall range from classical, rock and pop concerts to corporate events, television specials and network upfronts. "Television is the area requiring the highest-quality lighting, and TV lighting designers have requeste

UK - A global musical phenomenon, Wicked has taken to the road for its first UK and Ireland tour and the Production Resource Group (PRG) is providing a custom-built automation solution and the full lighting system.

The show opened at the Manchester's Palace Theatre to five star reviews and plays until 16 November when it will move on to Dublin. PRG is no stranger to the show, having supported the US tour since 2004.

PRG supplied a bespoke designed automation package for the production. For expediency the system used was set-up in its entirety in PRG's testing facility in New Windsor, New York prior to shipping to the UK. This enabled Wicked's creative team to pre-approve scenic moves, which saved valuable time in the theatre.

To support its UK installation John Galante, systems manager for PRG, joined the PRG and Wicked's technical team at the Manchester Palace Theatr

China - China's Handan Culture and Arts Centre is a green architectural dream, strongly characterised by its stunning hybrid concrete and steel ellipsoid structure, which is also built to withstand substantial seismic pressures. With such a focus on the structure itself - groundbreaking, though not ground-shaking, as it is - the aural niceties of grand theatre design were not left wanting - with a multichannel distributed speaker system installation controlled by TiMax, to meet world-class performance and event sound reinforcement standards.Working together with system integrator, Beijing Rangl Audio Co., Ltd, TiMax distributor Sound Works & Supplies Ltd. was well placed to propose a solution best suited to the particular demands and challenges the venue presented. For the building's expansive Grand Theatre space a d&b loudspeaker system was specified in conjunction with a 16x16 Ti

Denmark - When the staff at Svalegangen, a theatre in the western Danish city of Aarhus, started looking for new control desks for their 200 seat main theatre and touring needs, they weren't expecting to make a quick purchase.

They wanted to find a control system with familiar syntax, in order to ease users' learning process on the new desks, and which would have great support and would be future proofed, with regular software updates keeping up with advances in lighting technology.

After browsing the market for a replacement control desk for about a year, head of lighting Anders Kjems and his team decided on ETC Gio for their main stage and a second for touring, complementing the Ion they previously bought for the 40-seat foyer stage. As part of the ETC Eos line, both Gio and Ion use the same control syntax they were used to from their previous desk, enabling both resident an

USA - Founded in 1826 in Easton, Pennsylvania, USA, Lafayette College offers degree programmes in the liberal arts and engineering to its 2400 full-time students. As a member of the intercollegiate Patriot League, Lafayette has an active sports and recreational programme with modern facilities including Fisher Stadium, home of the Lafayette Leopards football team.

Fisher Stadium underwent a major renovation beginning in 2006 that included additional seating, synthetic turf, stadium lighting, a large press box and a 19' x 35' video display. The renovation included sound system upgrades but the upgraded system did not provide even coverage in the new seating areas and it had neighbourhood spill issues. In addition, many spectators complained that the new subwoofers seemed overpowering.

Last year, Lafayette asked Communication Systems, Inc. (CSI) of Allentown, Pennsylvania to red

France - Opéra Bastille in Paris is one of the two main venues of the Opera National du Paris, France's principal opera company (the other venue is the prestigious Opéra Garnier). Designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott and located at the place de la Bastille, the building houses a 2700 seat theatre as well as a smaller concert hall and studio.

Part of President Francois Mitterrand's 'Grands Projets', Opéra Bastille was one of eight iconic building projects begun in the 1980s to revitalise Paris and create modern 'monuments' to symbolise France's role in art, economics and politics at the end of the twentieth century. The scale of Mitterrand's project was compared at the time to the major building schemes of Louis XIV and as such, The Bastille Opera house constitutes part of one of the most important post-war examples of urban planning in Europe.

UK - A new theatre for The Arts Educational Schools, London (ArtsEd), designed by RHWL Arts Team, has been completed and opened last night in the presence of president and benefactor Lord Lloyd-Webber and with a performance of one of his most celebrated musicals Evita.

The 200-seat horseshoe theatre was created as part of a major programme of refurbishment made possible by a donation of £3.5 million from The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. The theatre's design was conceived by RHWL Arts Team who was appointed as architect to deliver a contemporary performance space enabling students of the school to more closely experience West End conditions. The interior design aims to reflect the vibrancy of the School and the energy and enthusiasm of the students.

The new theatre has been completely remodelled within the old space and is now fully accessible at both stalls and

USA - To call the last two years of work on the Long Beach Arena "a renovation" would be a substantial understatement. In reality, the work done by Theatre Projects, working for John Sergio Fisher Architects, Jerry Sherman AIA, and the city of Long Beach, could more accurately be described as a reinvention - breathing new life and new commercial potential into a venue that - at 50 years old - had fallen behind its newer, larger competitors, and found itself unsuited to meet the needs of some potential clients.

As the arena creates a new identity for smaller events - The Pacific Ballroom at Long Beach Arena -and begins hosting concerts, receptions, fashion shows, sporting events, and numerous other events, it will do so at a pace and with an ease-of-use unrivalled in the convention industry. This newfound viability is thanks in large part to a one-of-a-kind moveable gri

Germany - The opening ceremony of the new Walldorf Ärztezentrum (Medical Centre) was a true show with an imposing rig. Show management was assigned to Session Pro, which in turn placed its trust in 32 Clay Paky Sharpys, 48 Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800s, 24 Clay Paky A.leda Wash K20s and 24 Clay Paky A.leda Wash K10s.

The lighting designer and operator Benjamin Schleger had this to say, "The town of Walldorf wanted fireworks and we gave them something very similar. The concentrated beams and bright colours of our light and laser show in the town centre left over a thousand spectators speechless! The extremely precise powerful beams of the Clay Paky Sharpys stood out in particular. The Sharpys were undoubtedly the best choice, and that is why we used them from start to finish."

He continued, "In order to project images on the façade and create a beamshow seq

France - Located on the outskirts of Paris, Dubbing Brothers is a world-leading postproduction centre for adapting major films into foreign languages. Its recently renovated Dolby Atmos mixing stage is now equipped with a Meyer Sound system, which has supported the dubbing and remixing of films including Escape Plan, Saving Mr. Banks and the Dolby Atmos mix of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

"When we decided to update our main 7.1 mixing room to Atmos, we wanted monitoring of the highest quality," says Mathieu Taieb, sales director for Dubbing Brothers. "We knew other major post-production houses were using Meyer Sound for Atmos, so we arranged a session to listen to a Meyer Sound system. We were very impressed with what we heard. The sound was dynamic and precise, warm, and never aggressive. Both bass and high frequencies exhibited very
