USA - Beatport's top 10 sound systems in the US features five venues installed with Funktion-One. Beatport - one of the largest online music and tools resources for DJs in the world -searched across the USA to reach a shortlist of 10 standout venues. "The criterion here was very straightforward; which venues in the US have the best sound?" says Beatport.

The enviable top spot went to New York's Cielo Club, which boasts a Funktion-One system. And this was no one-off for the British loudspeaker manufacturer, which also took position number three (Beta, Denver), six (Q, Seattle), eight (Mansion 360, Miami) and number 10 (Smart Bar, Chicago) - quite an achievement when you consider the thousands of nightclubs, theatres and bars dotted around the country.

Recognition from Beatport caps a successful period for Sound Investment Audio, which specified and installed the five

UK - - Venue consultancy Charcoalblue has worked with long-term collaborators Haworth Tompkins Architects, in close association with the National Theatre's directors and in-house teams, to design an intimate, exciting, low-energy and sustainable temporary theatre on London's South Bank: The Shed.

Managed for Charcoalblue by senior partner Jon Stevens, the project was designed in under six months and built in eight. "This forward-thinking experimental building will serve as a temporary and flexible space during the closure of the Cottesloe Theatre, which is undergoing major refurbishment before reopening as the Dorfman Theatre in Spring 2014 as part of the National Theatre Future project."

Steve Tompkins, Haworth Tompkins Architects comments, "The Shed was conceived in a process of concentrated dialogue between trusted collaborators. We always enjoy Charcoalblue'

Australia - For the last 22 years Her Majesty's Theatre Ballarat has been working with an old mobile scissor lift to move stage sets and equipment from street level to stage level, a distance of 6.3m. Not only was it an arduous task to have to wheel it into position, it was becoming an OH&S concern.

"In order to load it you were reaching above waist level and we had no facility to attach it to trucks so it was very difficult to load from them," remarked Liz Mundell, technical operations manager. "There was always a gap between the lift and the back of the truck. Also if the winds got above 15 kilometres an hour we theoretically weren't supposed to use the lift - and in Ballarat that's a gentle breeze."

Other issues included the size of lift and the amount it could carry so council made funds available for a new lift and the project was put out to tender. Pr

USA - The Family Church of McAllen, Texas (TFC) chose a Robe lighting system for its new 1400-capacity main worship auditorium. The Robe fixtures were specified by TFC's technical director Obed Castillo and supplied by Phil Rapp of Gear Systems Design from Edmond, Oklahoma, who partnered with TFC to supply and install the full technical production package for the new space.

The new larger sanctuary was the result of a much needed expansion to the existing premises to accommodate the popular and well-attended worship services. The stage systems for the new auditorium were designed for concerts and broadcasts in addition to the five weekly services. Currently TFC has a web-based ministry, but future plans include going to a multi-site format, so good broadcast lighting was vital to the final technical plans.

The Netherlands - Stadsschouwburg Theatre in Utrecht opened in 1941 and has become one of the best known theatres in the central Netherlands, staging a wide variety of shows from traditional theatre and cabaret, to dance, opera, circus and youth performances. When Arnout Verdonk, Stadsschouwburg's sound technician, started looking for a new intercom system he put several to test, and the whole technical team was involved in making the right decision.

"We decided on the ASL digital system because of its flexibility and its ability to easily interface to our existing analogue intercom systems, wireless systems and 4-wire equipment," Verdonk explains. "We are a theatre with many different productions (more than 380

UK - As part of LOCOG's Supplier Recognition Scheme, Maltbury Staging has been recognised as Supplier of modular staging solutions (ExCeL) to the London 2012 Games.

"Actually," says Philip Sparkes, Maltbury's MD "this description tells only a small part of the story of Maltbury's involvement in the Games. We started with one contract and ended up supplying goods or services to half of the Olympic sports!"

Maltbury's story began with winning the tender for the contract to supply the stage and back wall for the Weightlifting competition. There was no technical specification for the platform so they first had to design the platform that LOCOG and the Olympic Weightlifting team wanted and then prove that they could deliver it. The same applied to the back wall, which gradually changed from a simple series of tall flats into a monolithic structure of almost 200m

UK - Watched by an estimated 1m viewers per week, the new series of Sky One's Got To Dance has once again packed a prime-time punch.

Le Mark's Sharon Marshall said, "Keeping up with the fast paced performances and such varied dancing styles is no easy task for any dance floor. The robust yet forgiving nature of our Harmony Dance Floor is a key reason why it's one of our best sellers around the globe."

Norway - Artistic Licence Multichrome Tube LED fixtures have played a central part in the visual presentation of Isslottet at Den Norske Opera in Oslo where local distributor, Rubicon, supplied over 100 units to faciliate Øyvind Wangensteen's highly imaginative lighting and video design.

The story deals with issues of life and death, and how what once was light and delightful can turn dark and dangerous.

Wangensteen's design called for the creation of dripping 'ice taps' which could incorporate a 3D movement that was reflected in the high shine stage floor and formed a vital

Slovakia - With roots going back to 1776, Slovenské Národné Divadlo (the Slovak National Theatre, or SND) in Bratislava has witnessed over 300 years of drama, in all senses of the word. Its current building, the City Theatre, was constructed in 1886. The current SND company was established at the City Theatre in 1920. The 611-seat venue is now known as the SNT Historic Building, to differentiate it from an additional venue opened in 2007. Locally it is referred to as the 'Old Opera', as nowadays it mainly hosts opera and ballet. After long and trouble-free service, the theatre's Yamaha PM5D-RH digital console has moved on to new owners and a CL series system installed in its place.

USA - Built nearly seven decades ago, Miami Beach's Variety Theatre - later known as the Paris Theatre - achieved a certain amount of fame in the '80s when Big Time Productions used the space as a photo/film studio to shoot album covers and music videos for top artists like Madonna and U2.

Today, world-renowned musicians and celebrities are once again pouring into the South Beach hotspot - now dubbed 'Bamboo Miami' - but this time for its swanky nightlife. Bucharest-based Bamboo Group, a successful European club owner and promoter, took over the landmark venue last year and renovated it into a lavish nightclub that both faithfully preserves its classic Art Deco ornamentation and dresses it up with a mega-dose of modern ambience.

As part of the renovation, Bamboo Group brought in Audio Formula of Miami to supply a full L-Acoustics loudspeaker system to sonically reinforce the s

The Netherlands - Roermond-based Easy Touch and Live Music (Arnhem) report a complete AV installation at the ECI cultuur fabriek in Roermond. The cultural centre is located at a former electrochemical factory that has been abandoned since 1974. The site has now been transformed into a temple of culture over the past two years. Having opened in September 2012, it now comprises a concert hall, a theatre, two cinema halls, an exposition room and a bar/restaurant.

It was made clear to Bart Smits of Live Music that the installation would have to be without compromises and ready for the future. The ECI technical team was closely involved in the decision making from the start. "If we wanted to meet the high demands of the ECI we could only go for our selection of high-end AV suppliers."
