In what has been dubbed the tour of the Undisputed Heavyweight Champions of rock n’ roll, Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth are set to co-headline one of the biggest shows of the summer. The unique collaboration of the former Van Halen lead singers is setting fans into a fury and promises to deliver a show that will not disappoint. Hagar and Roth are alternating nights opening for each other.

The production nicknamed ‘The Big Rock Show’ will certainly live up to its name as far as the lighting goes. Lighting designer David Davidian designed a mammoth rig that is dominated by PAR cans and a plethora of 8-Lite blinders complete with scrollers. Also key to the rig are five 3k Syncrolites and 28 Martin MAC 2000s, controlled through a WholeHog II system. Each of the Rock Icons has his own lighting director: at the helm for David Lee Roth is Sam Raphael whilst Mike Hall calls

The Deep is Hull’s £45.5m Millennium project and a central part of the city’s regeneration programme. Supported by a grant of a cool £21.5 million from the Millennium Commission, the world’s first ‘Submarium’ has been designed by Sir Terry Farrell and features various aquaria, a business centre, a lifelong learning centre and research facility.

The venue boasts the deepest water tank in Europe. This, and its 11 other tanks, are home to seven species of shark and thousands of fish. These tanks range in size from the ‘Endless Oceans’ tank holding 2.3 million litres of salt water to the smaller ‘Jewel’ tanks which hold just 1 cubic metre. The design consultant for the exhibition was John Csáky Associates, whilst the lighting consultant for the exhibition and exterior lighting was DHA Design Services, with Peter Fordham as project l

Celebrating a decade of Sensor dimming, the 6000th ETC dimming channel in central London was installed at the Central School of Speech and Drama this winter, as part of the complete refurbishment of its Embassy Theatre. To commemorate the opening of the new facility at the end of April, students of the school staged a performance of Sweeney Todd.

Founded in 1906, the school moved to its current NW3 location in 1956. The site, which was formally the Hampstead Music Conservatoire, included a fine proscenium-arch theatre - the Embassy Theatre. Central to the school's ethos is keeping abreast with contemporary developments and it is committed to extending the high educational standards already on offer. As such, the school embarked on an extensive building programme during the 1990s, culminating in the recent refurbishment of the Embassy Theatre.

White Light Sales are continuing to support strong demand for Strand Lighting's 500 Series of lighting control consoles. First put to serious use by White Light on shows such as Martin Guerre and Jesus Christ Superstar back in 1996, the consoles have become the standard lighting control in the West End and around much of the UK.

White Light Sales have recently supplied new consoles to a number of venues. The Leicester Haymarket has purchased two 520is, and will be the first theatre in the UK - and amongst the first in the world - to have Strand's new iPaq-based wireless handheld remote. The Milton Keynes Theatre has replaced its existing console with a 520i. The Malvern Festival Theatre and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford have both purchased 520is, while the Theatre Royal Norwich and the Wilde Theatre in Bracknell have purchased new 530is to replace their earlier 430s. Following its recent relocation to new UK offices in Langley, Berkshire, Osram invited L&SI to visit its new premises and, in particular, view the new interactive showroom that is set to become the focal point of the UK headquarters.

This is not a ‘showroom’ in the traditional sense - though its intention is very much to showcase the latest lamp innovations from the company - but more of an interactive experience, hence the name ‘Osram Light Experience’. Stretching across over 200sq.m and incorporating a café, light studio and auditorium, the venue can work as a single space or be split into two areas by a ‘light wall’, allowing different groups to visit the studio simultaneously.

It is clear that the design team from Furneaux Stewart, led by Jane Huggins and Keith Feeney, understood Osram’s brief for something out of the ordinary all too

From its now established base at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London, the ABTT Show continues to underline its role as a key event for the theatre industry. The trade show, which took place last week, attracted well over 100 exhibitors from across the wide spectrum of supplies and services, as a result pulling in over 2,500 visitors.

ABTT’s emphasis on training and education was demonstrated by the wide-ranging seminar programme which accompanied the event, but the highlight was the ABTT Dinner staged on the first evening where Major Sir Michael Parker, famed for his work on such events as the Royal Tournament and more recently All the Queens Horses, was the guest speaker. The Awards announced during the Dinner recognized the work of sound designer Andrew Bruce of Autograph Sound who collected a Lifetime Achievement Award, whilst the Technician of the Year award went to Nick

Wybron has added two Scandinavian lighting companies to its worldwide dealer network - Bico Professional A/S in Denmark and Stockholm Lighting in Sweden.

One of Sweden's leading lighting sales companies, Stockholm Lighting had been looking to add colour changers to its existing range of lighting equipment for some time and negotiations with Wybron were finalised this spring. Originally concentrating on selling lighting equipment to the film and TVindustries, Bico expanded into the theatrical market in 1999 and has been looking to extend this part of its product range ever since. After making initial contact with Wybron at last year's NAB show, Bico now has a range of Wybron's lighting accessories in stock.

Until now commercial and architectural lighting controls have generally been served by two independent systems with interfacing provided via volt-free contacts. With its latest lighting control module, iLight has integrated both the commercial and architectural functions within a single system, providing a fully integrated solution in terms of both hardware and software.

The new SCH1000T is a 10-way pluggable lighting control module. Most commercial lighting control products have only eight output ports on the lighting control module which can cause problems when dealing with a regular ceiling grid. The iLight system’s 10 outputs will enable a 3 x 3 or 2 x 5 luminaire matrix, creating shorter cable lengths to the lights, as well as reducing the total number of units required. The system is easy to install since all connections are via a plug and socket arrangement. As part of the

The festival season kicked in for DPL Production Lighting at Maldon in Essex, for the Maldon Promenade two-day event, staged against the picturesque backdrop of the tidal River Blackwater.

RMS - Rental Management Systems has introduced new options to link its rental management software to external software programs. With the 'input-link', users of RMS are able to import equipment-lists from drawing programs such as AutoCAD and Stardraw. Once a design has been created in a drawing package, a list is automatically generated containing all the elements within the drawing, which can then be imported into a project within the RMS software.

The 'output-link' provides an easy way to connect RMS to the most popular accounting packages. After the completion of a project, all relevant financial information can be exported into a file, which can then be read by the accounting software.

Bandit Lites UK supplied lighting to the European section of Neil Young’s latest ‘Are You Passionate’ tour, which visited Brixton Academy for two nights as part of an extensive European jaunt.

Despite his worldwide profile and his stage presence, Young is relatively shy as a performer, always wearing a hat onstage, and disliking spotlights so LD Keith Wissmar, who has worked with Young for nine years, has his work cut out. The tone of the Are You Passionate tour - a retro Motown style - much softer and more rounded than much of the material that Young has produced in the past, inspired Wissmar to design a pseudo 1960/70’s TV set look into his show lighting, typical of the US Bandstand teenage music shows of that era. Simple in presentation when compared to the slick productions of today, they nonetheless yielded a certain aesthetic charm. Wissmar reproduced this

The British Airways London Eye was turned Gold between 31st May until 9th June to highlight a charity fundraising initiative over the Jubilee period. Once again, Park Avenue Productions, working with producer Ajay Parekh and lighting designer Paul Cook, called on the services of Vari-Lite Europe. Cook specified a rig of 80 VL5 Arcs at the base of the Eye, to create a gold wash capable of dynamic colour and intense chases in harmony with the many Jubilee beacons being lit around the country.

Paul Cook commented: "The combination of the Whole Hog control system, pre-focusing work in Vari-Lite Europe’s WYSIWYG suite and the use of the VL5 Arcs enabled a stunning sequence of looks to be created with only limited on-site time. The shimmering golden effect was created with complex sequences of fast colour changes. The 10-day run of this event meant that we had to take tidal chang

Amongst the assorted professionals checking out the range of consoles from the Frog to the Bull Frog were designers from the State Theatre, a large number of representatives of local lighting rental and production companies and music venues, as well a sprinkling

In conjunction with French company Skylight, Fourth Phase London has taken on board the new CE marked and approved Syncrolite SX3K, to add to its already extensive rental stock. The automated SX3K has been developed to meet the needs of lighting designers, directors and producers of tours, film premieres, festivals and major events. A compact, high-performance fixture, the SX3K is the only 3000W Xenon searchlight that can be either suspended head down from truss, or used on the ground in the traditional way.

The new Syncrolites were specified by Durham Marenghi and supplied by Fourth Phase to bring the Queen Victoria Memorial to life and to back-light its fountains for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations, as well as highlighting performances on two stages each side of The Mall outside Buckingham Palace. Fourth Phase also used the fixtures on the recent Destiny's Child tour. Their next sto

ENTTEC has just released a new firmware version for the EVO, featuring more than 100 improvements on the previous release. Many new shortcuts have been implemented to drastically reduce the number of key-presses. Software provider Stardraw has chosen InfoComm 02 to unveil a new suite of design applications. While they follow the principles of the developer’s established product range, Stardraw AV, Stardraw Audio, Stardraw Lighting 2D, etc, the new applications are fully web-enabled and users simply hit a web page to use the software within their Internet browser.

Stardraw managing director David Snipp explains: "Our conventional applications have established the sorts of tools that integrators find easy to use and valuable for system design and documentation. The web-enabled applications have been written from the ground up to provide comparable functionality, but they are designed to run within a web page. This is brand new technology and Stardraw is proud to be the first company to our knowledge anywhere in the world to offer full CAD capability via the web. It's a significant deve

Following our earlier news piece on Lightfactor’s involvement with the new Madame Tussauds venue in Amsterdam, we have more details on the role the company played in a new exhibition section within the Tussauds attraction in London.

Feel The Goal is based around the goal scored by David Beckham in the 90th minute of last year’s World Cup qualifier against Greece. There are just two figures in the exhibition - Beckham and England manager Sven Goran Eriksson. Lighting is a crucial atmospheric element of the piece as it leads up to the goal, complete with dramatic sound effects and a pulsating floor, replicating Beckham’s heartbeat. The rationale behind Tussauds new exhibition area is to be able to re-theme the space every two or three months, allowing the highlighting of topical issues of the day, and enabling visitors to re-live ‘magic moments’. Cirro Lite now has available for rental the new Bag-o-Lite system from Licht Technik. The Bag-o-Lite was originally designed for the film and television market, but when combined with Licht Technik’s combination shutter/colour changer, has been used to stunning effect on a number of live productions.

The system was originally conceived by Uwe Hagenbach and Bernhard Grill of Licht Technik, the original idea being to provide a soft light with unique qualities that would offer new solutions to some of the more traditional lighting and rigging problems that occur on locations and in studios. The units are filled with nothing more than compressed air and have the ability to protrude up to a full 6m when horizontal. Cirro-Lite are currently stocking six-metre and three-metre bags with attachments to fit onto 4k and 6k/12k ARRI & LTM Pars.

In the short time since its launch, Coemar’s new CF7WashZoomX has been establishing itself throughout Europe. Wrapped in the carbon fibre covers that have become the trademark of Coemar’s CF family, the new unit extends the series of moving lights.

The WashZoomX is fired by a 700W MSR lamp down a high quality optical path, delivering standard Coemar high output and crisp definition. Output can be manipulated via the powerful zoom lens system and series of filters, which will adjust the beam characteristic from maximum intensity to maximum evenness to maximum diffusion. Alongside the zoom capability - which can produce beams as narrow as 9° and as wide as 54° with the diffusion lens, or as wide as 80° with the prismatic lens - Coemar's CMY colour mix system is included, plus a single dichroic colour wheel and colour correction filters.
